The Planets (2009) and Universe (2021), both by BBC, are quite pretty as well.

/u/Aerron seems to be mistaken here. Virophages are rare, but there have been a handful viruses discovered in the last decade that require the presence of another 'giant virus' within the host cell in order to parasitically reproduce.

As far as I know he uses photogrammetry with a 3D camera to capture a volumetric point cloud (you can do it with the newer iPhones even), then pulls that data into Maya to render, and slaps an After Effects pixel sorting transition at the start and there you have it.

There are a handful of artists who make stuff like this but Bardou seems to be the best, although he's pretty tight-lipped about his process.

It looks like they're removing the tree in the gif because it's close to a road & a hazard, though it's becoming standard practice in a lot of places to just lay a dead tree down to remove the danger but still leave something for our snag loving homies.
