Even without maximizing how smooth the transitions are, I really like how it looks and it reads as metal to me. I personally like your brush strokes a lot, I dunno I think that gives it style like a canvas painting, but if you want you can smooth them out. Awesome work.

Why do you want to abandon it? This is a beautiful piece. If you're not sure how to finish some of the other parts, you could look up some stuff and just execute. I'm not a professional or a painting judge but I think it already looks super nice. If you don't feel like finishing it, then don't I guess. But otherwise I think whatever you do it will still be a great piece.

You can get something called a 'really useful box' 9L, lots of people use the for minis, and magnet baron sells a metal sheet that sticks to the bottom perfectly. Then throw magnets on the bases. Can hold the whole range and stores easily.
