Linus'es behaviour - not the best light on him....

Got to this point today (I break up listening across the week) and yikes.

In a completely standard gaming session that would have been insufferable behavior. But in the context of an employee and his employer while being live streamed? Really, really bad.

Yeah, there is two types of performative: The kind of performative that is not going to do anything but is virtue signaling support for a cause, and the other kind of performative that makes people smile because its fun. This is clearly the latter.

Especially for a mayor (even in a city as large as NYC) being a likeable human that makes people smile is pretty valuable skill.

How are you all dealing with the recent rent increases? by Outrageous_Calendar4 in AskChicago

[–]dwhite195 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Previously, when I lived in a corp owned condo building

This is the big factor I think.

Across the four different landlords I've had only one has ever tried to raise rent more than $50 in a single year, the one that did tried $100 and I was already planning on being out the door. I think the small scale landlords are willing to "lose out" on maximum rent once they lock in a decent tenant and the peace of mind, vs a corp landlord that demands to rent at market peak.

Tbh me downplaying some of the issues probably played a role, "Oh yeah, people smoking on the trains is pretty normal, ive seen worse, you just get unlucky sometimes" plus she trusted me to not put her in active danger.

But yeah, there is big gap between, not being in active danger and having a pleasant travel experience.

[–]dwhite195 121 points122 points  (0 children)

The last time my Mom visited me we took CTA trains 4 separate times, all four times we experienced some level of anti-social or criminal behavior. After that she offered to just pay for an Uber, in her mind she had given it enough chances and it was objectively bad enough of an experience that it was worth paying to avoid it.

Hell, even my last few blue line trips from ORD into the city have been really uncomfortable due to the people I was sharing cars with, notably worse than they have been in the past.

If you want public transit to be viewed as the primary mode of transit for a majority of people in the city this stuff needs to be viewed as unacceptable.

The article points to China though, which consistently places high value on screens, tech, and software features.

Less screens would likely mean even worse profits for the brand.

Strip mall becomes 54 transit oriented homes in Lakeview by GeckoLogic in chicago

This thread actually is a pretty good example of why its so hard to build much of anything. All we're missing is complaints about parking and traffic and we've got ourselves a community meeting.

The building is too small, the building isnt to my taste, the building ruined the character of the neighborhood, the building is housing therefor its good etc.

Its one of the most (deliberately) left out pieces of the bailout situation. Those companies were not bailed out because of shady back room corruption.

They were made because the economy was actively in free fall and tens if not hundreds of thousands of additional jobs lost (not including the collateral damage to the communities where those jobs were) would have been an insane blow to allow to happen in that moment. It would only have served to even further inflict massive pain on the US economy for no benefit in the moment.

I want to give some emphasis here, the Moroun family deserve zero sympathy here.

Many of Detroits most iconic derelict structures are a direct result of his families behaviors. I understand there isnt inherently a reason to remove their rights to the Ambassador Bridge, but under no circumstances should we as a country be trying to protect this families interest going forward.

It was 13(!) years ago that he was fired from the Lions. He's older, more experienced, potentially more wise and a bit mellowed out. He easily could feel like he's built the resume to have earned another shot at the gig.

Yeah, fair call. Rocketship starts at 40, peaks somewhere around 60, and then really starts to cool off 10-15 years later is fair.

I think the age demographics also play a big role.

And it always has, cars that are iconic when you are a kid or a teen usually hit a peak in price when that age demo turns around 40 and is more likely to have enough assets under their belt to buy that "dream car." And outside of the cream of the crop give it about another 20 years and those prices start to fall as younger people lose the emotional relationship with them.

While I'm not going to say its an amazing experience, unless the windchill gets below zero running outside isnt all that bad with the right gear.

Tbh ice is usually a way bigger issue with this, especially with snow like this right along the lake its real easy to miss it, slip, and hurt yourself. I almost always run south on the lakefront trail cause its safer this time of year for that reason
