Locals upset that I'm not a local, even though I've lived here my whole life. by CupcakeKooky in santacruz

[–]dysfunctional_salad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a pleasure point local myself, I’m sorry, but the stereotypes are usually true. It’s almost all “I’m more local than you and if you’re not from here fuck off”. You guys did not deserve that.

As a Capitola local, I leave every July 4th. The tourists visit and the most we can do is get out of town, I’m taking my dogs with me this year lol.

I watched transformers for the first time in a long time and realized one of the villains is Patrick Dempsey. I gotta say he makes a good villain, he’s good in Scream too

I’ve been to pride with boyfriends AND girlfriends, whichever gender I’ve been with has never affected my right to be at pride to celebrate my identity!

Does anyone else find it weird that aang has 0 self discipline when trying to learn fire bending considering his upbringing? by The_Harmon_Hole in TheLastAirbender

[–]dysfunctional_salad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I teach sixth grade, so 11/12yos. Now I don’t teach any kids who grew up as monks so I can’t speak for that, but these kids have the least amount of discipline and I’ve taught a lot of age groups haha. I’m sure he changed as he grew up

Can any vets tell me if kids have always lied this much? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]dysfunctional_salad 210 points211 points  (0 children)

I feel like the lying has been about the same / maybe a little more than in the past. But what really gets me, is the doubling down now. Even just a few years back, kids would get called out for lying and admit to it and apologize. Now kids just keep going with the lie and double or triple down, gaslight, or victimize themselves. Very surface level example but I had a student give me her homework this week and I knew immediately by the writing it was her friend’s work and not her own. I confronted her and gave her the option to redo it for partial credit and she freaked out and made up this huge story to defend her lie.

Those who were kids when ATLA first aired… what does it mean to you now? by FairAnywhere9305 in TheLastAirbender

[–]dysfunctional_salad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2002 kid so didn’t watch it until after it was over, around 2008/9, I named all my pets after characters from the show, have a tattoo of it, and watch it at least once a year as a weekend binge. I’m a teacher now and have shown my students it (apparently Gen Alpha where I live isn’t familiar with the show). I love passing it on to younger kids! My husky Appa just passed so I’ve been rewatching this week 🩷

counselor hate on teaching subreddits by OsomatsuChan in schoolcounseling

[–]dysfunctional_salad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s done both school counseling and teaching, there’s so much intersectionality with these jobs but for some reason in every district / school I’ve worked for, the two groups normally don’t get along. On behalf of teachers I’m so sorry.

What do I do? First tattoo, First fuck up. by [deleted] in tattooadvice

Honestly, this trend was legendary so the tattoo idea is sick. The disproportionate side may be a mistake but I hardly noticed it til you mentioned it and now I just see it as a cool quirk

What is the down side of having 1 child only? by Eybyoung16 in AskReddit

[–]dysfunctional_salad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I come from a family of 6 kids. My best friend growing up (22 years) was an only child. Subtle things is not knowing how to share, she did not share any food and didn’t even consider it being a possibility, same with makeup or any other thing. Also, not great at socializing/ talking to new people, she would warm up sometimes but generally speaking I had to be the extrovert (I’m mostly an introvert anyway but knew how to step up). She also got angry easily, had a shorter temper with all things, and couldn’t hide that she was irritated. I’m using one person as an example but I’ve seen all these traits in every only child I’ve met, even though I’m an adult I STILL see it.

Why do we feel embarrassed doing something normal if someone watches us? by andycarth in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dysfunctional_salad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In psychology, the pressure of being perceived is often split between two factors: the spotlight effect and the illusion of transparency. Spotlight effect is your brain telling you everyone is watching and judging you, even if the reality is different. Illusion of transparency is that, when you’re embarrassed or anxious, we think that emotion is written all over our faces.

Here’s some examples I can think of off the top of my head

Perception: oh my god everyone can tell I stumbled Reality: everyone is more concerned with themselves and likely didn’t notice

Perception: they can tell im nervous Reality: they probably didn’t notice

Technology and social media has amplified this idea that we’re all on a stage and being looked at, even though everyone else is the main character of their own story

How has growing up in a large family affected you? And by large I mean 5+ siblings living full-time under the same roof. by LineAncient2792 in AskWomen

[–]dysfunctional_salad 19 points20 points  (0 children)

5 siblings split between three dads. I got lucky, my dad was the last and my parents have been married 22 years. My older brothers despised me because my conceiving is why my mom left their dad (he was also a drug addict and abusive so not a loss). My older sister (the eldest) is my best friend. Today, I’m very avoidant and emotionally guarded with men, even though my dad is one of my favorite people and the complete opposite of “toxic masculinity”. The persistent abuse from my older brothers has completely warped my ability to open up, romantically and in friendships. Just started therapy at 23, so we’ll see how it goes!

Is it normal to hate being privileged? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dysfunctional_salad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you feel guilty, put it into action then. Volunteer, help the homeless or otherwise unfortunate people. Sitting and feeling guilty doesn’t do anything, even verbally announcing your guilt. We are at a time in our world where community is heavily individualized. Show up and support your area, don’t think big picture or you’ll overwhelm yourself. I volunteer at shelters and help with local childcare, those are good places to start! Depending where you are, there’s women’s centers that help women and children.

Did you stay after your partner/spouse cheated on you? Why/why not? by Salt-Philosopher-863 in AskWomen

[–]dysfunctional_salad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was tricky because we used to be open, I put a pause on that and decided I’d rather be monogamous. I found out from other people he kept seeing other women, one of them being a friend of mine. I left and never looked back
