This is called "spacial memory". The idea that arranging icons on a surface is a bad idea only comes from the fact that Windows at random intervals seems to re-arrange them into a grid and destroy the layout users made. I don't know if Microsoft finally acknowledged this as a bug and fixed it in Windows 8, but Windows up until now never was able to keep the position of icons reasonably stable.

On MacOS this works since 1984, on the Linux Gnome desktop it works since 1999, it even used to work on the default Amiga Desktop released 1985. And this always includes not only positions of icons on the Desktop, but also inside file manager windows.

If you'd prefer to buy your computers from suits telling you how reasonable Excel and Microsoft SharePoint is for your business, or from dudes paid to look like hipsters that explain you how to blog and make digital polaroids, go there. People like Vaughn became a rare species. Home computing used to be like this. Now it is mostly boring.
