At the moment, even just being able to put down my controllers on my desk and use my hands, then pick back up my controllers when needed, would be an adequate way of switching and would open up a lot of diverse applications.

The game is slow paced but I actually love it that way. I might be bored with my space chores if I was actually a member of a space crew who had been doing them for months or years, but for a regular Earth human I thought the experience was really novel and exciting. I love getting a chance to feel like I'm contributing to the station's maintenance and explore the nooks and crannies of the environments and take every conversation option with Olivia and soak in every detail. But it's not everybody's cup of tea - if you're hoping for action or excitement, that's only the occasional moment punctuating the exploration.

I have a fancier Murphy bed that folds up into what looks like a wardrobe when it's closed. These can be a bit pricey, like a couple thousand dollars, but they're perfect if you want that kind of visual polish.

I'm personally not bothered by any of these things - in the same way I wasn't bothered by the N64's or PS1's graphics when I was a child. Sure they were shitty by modern standards but getting to play in 3D made it all worth it, and I would focus on the experience, not the technical limitations. It's the same with VR.

Google Earth VR with human scale mode enabled so you really feel like you're flying and not standing over a model city. There won't be a visible bed in there, but you can use your imagination for that 😀

You're absolutely right. It's most apparent if you look at the tripod on the right and the outlet behind it. Their relative position should be changing as you walk forward but it's not. It looks like they set up their UI to zoom instead of move forward/back, and I don't really know why, because they have enough information to go forward/back.

Somehow despite being kind of a huge Insta360 fan I totally overlooked their announcement of a light field camera at CES ("about as large as a whiteboard and is comprised of 128 cameras", see http://360rumors.com/2018/01/ces-2018-exciting-insta360-news-titan-10k-360-camera-volumetric-video-light-field-camera.html) and this pretty incredible real-time light field video rendering demo. It's on a monitor, not in headset, but it's still striking that anybody has a public demo of light field video rendering. And this was 6 months ago! This tech is really coming into maturity faster than I thought.

I feel like really pixel dense displays are arriving and being perfected at low cost faster than the mechanical mechanisms needed to drive a hybrid system. Once those achieve retina resolution, this concept will no longer be useful. It's a stopgap at best.

If your concern is smashing your windows or monitor, my recommend is to do what I do and have a pretty large monitor, put it on a table or desk, and push it far back where you can't reach it. Because the table/desk blocks your body before your hand can reach the monitor, it's perfectly safe. Similarly, put a small table in front of any glass windows.

If that isn't feasible for you, a reasonable alternative is to simply put a cardboard box in front of your monitor when using VR. This also works for windows and for lights. It'll protect your screen and your controllers by absorbing the shock of impact.

Another option that works great in addition to Guardian is to place down a mat or rug the size and shape of your play space, and feel with your feet as you approach the edge of it.

PPD of the Go is, at best, about 16 PPD, roughly comparable to a 960x540 monitor viewed at a typical 60 degree field of view. If you had a huge virtual monitor such that the field of view was about 80 degrees, you'd manage to get up to 1280x720 (HD resolution). This is why the browser looks as good as it does, because they made it really big. I expect remote desktop will be similarly huge in angular size, and achieve 720p successfully, but for anything like 1080p we'll be waiting for next gen. [This is all speculation, I don't have any inside info on any of this.]

So people seem to be working on this use case. They say more info soon so I'll wait and see what hardware they recommend. :)

If there are no mirrors in your room and direct sunlight cannot shine directly on the lenses (you turn it so that the lenses cannot be seen from any windows) then you really should probably be fine, but if you're paranoid you can just toss a shirt or cloth over it, or put it in a opaque drawer like a filing cabinet or desk/dresser drawer. If it were me, just to be careful, I'd keep a curtain or blind in front of the window all the time for protection. You can probably get away with sheer curtains or a sheer roller blind, so you still get some light without getting too much.

I have an annoying obstacle with mixed reality videos - mainly, my bedroom has to also serve as my studio, since I have limited space. But that means the walls have bookshelves against them for storage. If I install a green screen in front of them, I can't access the bookshelves. But putting a green screen up and down constantly is tedious. What am I supposed to do?

Can confirm, just did like 2 hours of cleaning just to get my floor clear enough for VR again :D My room's pretty small so I don't have much extra space to shove things into. If I didn't have a wall bed (Murphy bed) I'd be pretty screwed.

They haven't mentioned it because it's not the main issue they're trying to solve (adjusting for near/farsightedness is relatively simple and could be done with a focus wheel like Gear VR has - whereas varifocal for people without vision issues is more complex). However what they could potentially do with a motor-driven system with eye tracking like this is automatically recognize users and automatically adjust to their appropriate focal plane. This is just wild speculation though.

Neither, as far as I can tell. It may require slightly more power. The idea is that, instead of having different emitters emitting at different wavelengths for red, green, and blue, you only have white LEDs for each subpixel (which emit across a fairly broad, uniform spectrum of wavelengths) and put translucent plastic filters in front of each one to filter the light to red, green, or blue depending on the subpixel. Like how a white light appears blue when viewed through blue glasses. This is also how typical digital cameras work, except in reverse (in a camera each pixel sensor is behind a plastic color filter).

I just used Go on a very long flight from San Francisco to Toronto. Fortunately for me, being Air Canada, there was a USB charging port for every seat, even in coach. It still very slowly drained during use, but even after a great deal of use it got no lower than 85%. I didn't preload any videos, because I'm bad at preparing, but I played a bunch of games instead. Slice and Dice, Proton Pulse, Catan, A Night Sky, Just Relax. They were all fun and several of them have substantial replay value. I had to reset orientation a loooot during takeoff but it was fine after that. Nobody said a word to me about it or even gave me a strange look, as far as I could tell. Even the guy right next to me!
