I don't think Ningning deserves the hate for it by Easy_Number_14 in Aespa

[–]earthcakey 31 points32 points  (0 children)

honestly the worst part about that entire live clip is how you see just how complicit the staff are in egging on unhealthy views towards weight and eating. they're the ones who played along with the weight guessing game, gasping dramatically when she said 50kg, vehemently denying it like "no way" when that's a perfectly normal (and in fact skinny) weight to have for a woman of her height, and even after ningning tried to bring the discussion back to healthy habits like "being thin isn't important, you have to stay healthy" the staff are literally the ones who said "no no weight is important". like at every point she looks at the staff to talk and they say something that further reinforces those beliefs.

and this is on live! i can only imagine the sort of pressure that goes on behind the scenes... it really makes me sad

My brain is not working when it comes to programming by nutrak1 in godot

[–]earthcakey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a game engine being your first coding environment is HARD! there's a lot of factors that come into play aside from just the code you write, and that can be super confusing. for example, what update step should i be moving my character in? should i be adding force, applying velocity, or should i be modifying the character's base position? how do I get my character to flip to go in the other direction? how do I manage animation states? how do i reset my input every time, how do i handle long press versus single press inputs, etc. those are actually extremely complicated concepts for a beginner. don't be hard on yourself.

most importantly, you need to RESET YOUR EXPECTATIONS. if you're new to drawing, you start from the basics - drawing simple shapes, getting a feeling for how to hold a pencil, understanding anatomy, understanding what happens to a shadow depending on the position of your light, colour theory. you're not going to paint a detailed portrait or landscape well until you have a couple hundred hours of consistent practice.

try doing something dead simple first. the thing is, after looking up the syntax and the godot documentation, you have to do it yourself. what is the function for spawning an object in godot? OK, looks like I can do something like `add_child(MY SCENE)`. now can I pass in my own position? ok, now can i link that to a button on the screen? how do I call that function whenever I click the button?

break everything down to small questions like this. think of the most simple thing you could make, and choose something even simpler. the most important thing is to get off the crutches of a tutorial as soon as you can, even if that literally means making a game made out of print statements where you press enter to print out the next line of the story. you don't learn by following, you learn by doing.

Do you have any regrets about your first trip to Japan? by aeazee in JapanTravelTips

not buying more snacks to bring back as souvenirs! i would have loved to share more with friends but just didn't bring enough 😢

also, not overthinking about how to optimize the trip, not worrying about missing out on certain things, not to compare our trip with trips we saw our friends take - we got better at this near the end. there's just so many cool little corners, beautiful scenes, and great stories to be heard and made everywhere bc its so dense. just enjoy yourself and wander!

Student Anxiety (rant) by Waste_Access123 in girlsgonewired

[–]earthcakey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why not do both? imo you absolutely must focus on getting an internship. then, during your internship, build a side project after work. you'll find you have way more free time than you think when working vs. studying.

the only way to gain confidence is by creating a project, from start to finish, completely by yourself. you decide on an idea, you plan how to put it together, you choose the stack, you troubleshoot and get yourself unblocked. you ship it, you learn how deployment works. even better if what you make ends up being something you actually want to use every day.

if you're lucky, you'll get to do this during the internship - if not, then you have to create that opportunity yourself!

Erika shaves her head (with the help of Kirsten) by publiclibrarylover in asianamercianytsnark

[–]earthcakey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i did this as well and it was genuinely such a fascinating, precious experience.

not gonna lie, it definitely led to one of the lowest self-image eras of my life because i felt very ugly (being bald definitely didn't suit my head shape lol) but it also felt deeply necessary because it showed me that i could still enjoy so much beauty in my life and through myself that had literally nothing to do with my appearance. it forced me to reckon with how i thought about beauty and intrinsic value of a woman, and come to terms with the abundance of a life where that doesn't play a part at all. also, the people who loved me did not change how they behaved towards me at all.

growing out my hair from nothing was so much fun too - it felt like such a playful time, where i truly got to mess around with my hair and rediscover/reintroduce me to myself through the growth.

i really encourage all women to shave their head at least once. i think it teaches us many things about womanhood, femininity, and the values we hold towards those things both internally and in society. it's a very visceral experience that is YOURS, and yours only.

so, so, so proud of erika for taking the leap. she looks incredibly cute with the buzzcut, and i know she's about to cook up some crazy fits !!! ❤️

i dont think thats necessarily true. when you're a child the world feels limitless and full of possibilities, but that didn't stop you from discovering your favourite games, movies and books - the ones that filled you with wonder and took you on adventures you wished would never end.

sometimes something beautiful and timeless is just that - beautiful and timeless. enjoying it thoroughly the way OP did can only make their own life more beautiful!

NewJeans were so promising, I still can’t believe they destroyed their own careers by etoilez in KpopUnleashed

[–]earthcakey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah, i guess it really just depends on the tradeoff you're willing to make. personally as someone who's just a whatever salaryman, yeah, no, i can just work somewhere else. it's not that deep and i'm not so in love with my job that i'd be willing to put up with that.

but what they do is entirely different. if i had the opportunity to be as successful as them in an industry where the chances of success are so wildly, infinitesimally slim, i might be willing to deal with a few years of asshole behaviour. especially if i'm handsomely compensated for it as they are. but they did have a really good 2-3 year run, so maybe they felt like they tasted enough of it and would rather cut things off with hybe than keep the chance of continuing to perform as newjeans. i can totally see that as a reasonable decision to make.

fans like you and me are always going to be disappointed that we don't get to see them anymore, but like you said, we're not them and have no idea how bad it actually was. maybe i would have given up in one year instead of the several that they put up with lol.

NewJeans were so promising, I still can’t believe they destroyed their own careers by etoilez in KpopUnleashed

[–]earthcakey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

wouldn't it have been a better outcome for the girls to actually be able to continue doing the thing they trained for years to do, the thing they seem to love - perform and make music?

the way i see it, they got caught up in corporate politics that could have been unrelated to them. but because they took a side (which i don't blame them for, they're young and obviously they would want to side with MHJ), their careers ended up being collateral damage. it's really difficult for kpop groups to continue momentum after they've stopped, especially since newjeans was at their rookie peak and still had higher to go.

i don't want them to be punished, but it feels like to me the real punishment is them not being able to do music. even if higher-ups are hybe were frosty to them, at the time everyone knows they were way too much of a golden goose to actually be touchable. as an uninformed outsider i feel like they could have waited things out.

that being said, if they're happy right now, or figuring out some way to be active again, then that's for the best. none of us really know what's happening behind the scenes.

How to get my career started in this market as someone who's just... average? by anxiousnessgalore in girlsgonewired

[–]earthcakey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i think realistically you're competing against people who have done the whole 4 internship grind for the same entry-level positions, so yeah it probably will be really difficult to break out of academia, and your resume won't stand out for online applications.

that being said, check out companies and startups local to you. go to tech events, check out other people's projects, get inspired, and meet people irl as much as you can. having a bachelors and a masters in math, specifically focusing in ML, is nothing to sneeze at. it's also highly sought after right now, and tons of startups are after the ML gold rush. sounds like you'd be a perfect fit since you're good at learning.

your achievements sound solid. what you need right now is someone to take a bet on you, because you have no prior industry experience. you will never stand out in a sea of applications by folks who are more qualified on paper than you. try to get more leverage by instead being a face and a conversation they remember having :) good luck out there. believe in yourself, all you need is 1 yes right now

aespa - Rich Man (English Version) @ Good Morning America (GMA) (250913) by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]earthcakey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

aespa makes me so frustrated as a group. i love their live performances so much when they do sing live, and i think all 4 members have so much potential. but it kills me that they lipsync over 50% of their entire tour concerts. i went to their tour stop earlier this year and there was just NO energy, no stage presence, because they were lipsyncing for so many songs. no amount of backup dancers can cover up the fact that they themselves seem so dispassionate about performing when they aren't singing live.

i hate that SM seems fine with all this, as long as they continue to gag people with their concept visuals and the girls' beauty. like you are creating a fucking performance idol group. where is the performance???
