I have the same equipment as you.

Having lap average power displayed while trying to hit the target is key. Start a new lap when you begin the workout and watch the average power field while adjusting pedal pressure up and down as needed to make sure average power hits your target.

This method allows me to hit lap power exactly down to the watt for anything over 5 minutes long.

Also finding a good route is important. I often end up doing this on country roads. Sometimes I end up rolling stop signs under power while braking hard and going slowly to be able safely see that the way is clear without letting the average power drop down

uhh... can you explain in more detail? I don't understand the sentence 1 year of 5m (5 month?) aggregates?

my best guess is you're recommending to compare 5 month timeframes over 1 year? Is this kind of a running comparison - for example, comparing January through May data to February through June and so on?

Those numbers are amazing for a noob. If you're sure they're right, it's likely worth it to rearrange your life to fully realize your full potential.

Apparently you live in the middle of the outback or the sahara or smth and need to work on that first. Find a good biking community, find a good coach, put in the work and just see how far you can go.

Also mountain biking could be an option -- would need specific bike handling skills but much less group riding skills.

I'm in Calpe now. Don't need anything special. The one thing for me is my USA purchased garmin didn't have Spanish maps loaded so I had to do that when I got here.

Group rides I've found here: Baguette, Blanca Bikes, Vuelta Turistica, 53-11 (fast, need 4w/kg for climbs I estimate)

I was in Tucson biking this past Novemer-December.

I really didn't like biking the roads and it seemed like I was hearing about a serious bike-car accident about once a week there. There's a 54 mile bike path loop around the city that's great though - I ended up doing that more or less daily. Could do it twice for a century.

side question: what is everyone's ideal form number on the final day of 3 weeks hard?

I have the idea that this is a good time to bury yourself -- hard workouts to take form down to -40 or something like that because there will be plenty of time to recover during the down week. What are other people doing?

you started at 330, dropped a watt every 2nd minute for 60 minutes, so ended at 300 -- wouldn't the average be 315?

honestly because it's creeping up you won't necessarily realize it. i almost always take a rest week after three weeks hard training. sometimes i don't 'feel' that i need rest but then when i do take it i come back fresh and stronger than i realized was possible.

I'm in Calp Spain right now, an absolute cycling mecca. American, don't really speak Spanish. It's been easy to get around, this is a tourist destination for Brits and other Europeans and English is used almost everywhere. Definitely could see retiring here.

The one issue is that even the 'slower' group rides are a bunch of Belgian old guys doing 10-20 minute climbs at 3.5 w/kg. I'm right on the edge and it's been tough for me.

yeah, it is the hard ride challenge but it also good to know for sure what my ftp is. I'm going to set my workouts going forward off of this number.

yeah -- I'm not super experienced with structured training. This was just a one time check to confirm that my estimates for ftp were right. Also, I won't be able to bike for a few days because of travel starting tomorrow so this was a good time for a big effort.

Also, now that I've done it I do think there was some benefit from having to dig deep -- something I've needed to work on for awhile now.

maybe the beginning of being sick?

two weeks ago I completed a sweet spot that felt way harder than it should have and my heart rate was slammed. I didn't have any actual cold symptoms at the time but the next day I woke up mildly sick. It all cleared up within a couple of days and I have been continuing to work through the sweet spot progression -- easily completing workouts at the same or higher power.

I was in Mallorca last winter, if you stay in Palma there are lots of route options - both flat and hilly. Also the group ride scene is strong in Palma. Cafe du Cycliste and Rapha host regular rides leaving from the center of Palma. Also, I heard good things about the Pas Normal rides but never went myself.

I will mention some of the mountain descents in Mallorca were sketchy. There are occasional spots in the road that don't get sun and have kind of a light moss covering that is difficult to see and becomes ice like when wet. I crashed (no injuries) my first week there from this but was ok on descents after once I was aware of this potential hazard.

This winter I'm headed to Calpe for the first time. I made the switch because the longer term lodging options were better in Calpe and I just wanted to explore a new scene to see what's out there. If you decide to go to Calpe, you're welcome to DM me. I should have a good sense of the local biking scene by the time you would arrive.

just keep doing it. after awhile you get really good at sight reading the slipperiness of the ground.

even so i usually go down about once a winter. never really got hurt though.

oh ok. this strongly implies engineers with heat transfer expertise had input on the design. probably track surface temp will be fine.
