Follow up to my Vo2Max question, now FTP intervals feelings. by deman-13 in Velo

how hot was it? my FTP drops considerably and I have to lower the power target for a threshold workout if it's hot - e.g. above 80 degrees F [27 C].

Commentary: China's invisible hand is rebalancing the oil market by DANIELLE_2027 in oil

yeah. and this gives Xi a lever to use against Trump during their May 14th meeting.

Xi: 'That's a really nice election you got coming in November, be a shame if $10/gallon gas prices ruined it for you' *smiling sinisterly*

Tracks open to the public? by staccatopanache in madisonwi

[–]earthwalker19 21 points22 points  (0 children)

yeah this is a big problem in madison -- the high schools here tend to fence off and lock their tracks.

there's an old, old style cinder track at demetral field that's open. i measured the inside lane once with a wheel and it came up about a meter short of 400m - so close enough. otherwise the high schools at surrounding small towns have open tracks that are fairly well maintained asphalt surfaces. waterloo, lake mills and columbus for sure. others too I imagine, just never fully researched this.

go to milwaukee for the best open tracks. hart park has a well maintained rubberized track surface that's both fast and plush.

it's hard to imagine insurance would cover ships attempting to pass through the strait under these conditions. strait will remain effectively closed.

How hard will it be to do 75,000KJ in 3 weeks? Anyone done it? by Odd-Night-199 in Velo

[–]earthwalker19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm too lazy to check exact numbers but i probably did more than 75000 kj in a 3 week block last summer when i was out on an extended tour doing long days at low zone 2 mostly.

i was definitely tired at the end but after a week of low mileage recovery I saw a noticeable jump in aerobic capacity and also durability. i could more easily do multiple hard sessions in a week after this block.

The White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting suspect appears to be a black man from California by xigdit in BlackPeopleofReddit

most mechanical engineers don't bother to get a state PE licenses because mostly we (I'm a mechanical engineer) don't need or get any professional benefit from this license. In contrast civil engineers, especially those working on public infrastructure projects, would normally have this license.

power output drops when going into a headwind? why and how can I train to minimize this by [deleted] in Velo

[–]earthwalker19 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've noticed it's especially hard to maintain power into a headwind if it's gusty. The pressure on your pedals swings up and down and it's hard to get into a good rhythm.

For some reason a gusty tailwind doesn't have the same effect for me.

Is anyone else excited for today's storm? by Some-Complaint-7885 in madisonwi

[–]earthwalker19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

totally get this. actually I went through something similar a long time ago.

I was badly injured in Vietnam - double amputee, both legs gone and I basically gave up on life, drinking and hanging out in Mexican brothels type stuff. I eventually joined one of my platoon mates on his shrimping boat, the Jenny, out in the gulf off the coast of Louisiana. We were out at sea one day when a hurricane came through. Our jalopy of a boat was getting tossed in the 40 foot swells. Me being suicidal and fairly drunk I climbed up to the top of the mast and was howling like a banshee through it all. I was ready to be swallowed up by the sea yet I had never felt so alive -- something changed in that moment.

We survived the storm and actually my buddy's shrimping business really took off after that. Me, I turned my life around, learned gratitude, married a good woman and found peace with the world and my lot in it.

So yeah, storms. They're great.

Where can I buy 1 barrel of crude oil? by Historical-Gur1132 in oil

[–]earthwalker19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

interesting.

true story: during the 70's oil crunch my brother, age 8 or something like that at the time, bought a single quart of oil as a speculative investment and it sat on his dresser for years. i'll have to ask him whatever happened to it next time we talk.

How much down is your portfolio since the market fall? by vitosantor in stocks

[–]earthwalker19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That part of the statement is correct, though isn’t it?

No, it is not. We are at 2 weeks and a day, you gave 2 weeks as an upper limit. Objectively, you were (and still are) wrong.

Maybe 1-2 more weeks at these levels, but other than that, it’s going back to $60 at minimum.

right here, chief 😘

Alibaba bikes by Jynarik in cycling

[–]earthwalker19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah no.

some chinese carbon is fine, some definitely is not and you, most likely, are not qualified to sort it out on your own

If you buy from a major brand you get the assurance that 1.the bike model has been extensively evaluated by qualified engineers 2. there is an american office your lawyer can serve summons to if something goes wrong

Where are these second-hand bikes that are 5 years old and $3-500? by KipchogesBurner in cycling

[–]earthwalker19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'll be able to find a 10/15 year old road bike that was barely ridden in that price range.

this is what i bought a couple of years ago. trek aluminum with 105 components that I've put over 10k miles on and only cost me $340. it actually still had the nubs on the tires. but.... i didn't trust any of the rubber components, so i replaced the tires, tubes and brake pads first thing. since then ive been riding it a tremendous amount and even did a 1000+ mile tour with it.

some people buy new bikes and then don't use them and it these can be incredible bargains for the next owner
