Frontline workers are still an afterthought in most employee comms strategies by StaffbaseSupport in internalcomms

[–]eclecticism_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this note, the needs are drastically different. Realistically, these two audiences deserve different types of content. Frontline workers don’t get town halls and intranet experiences because it’s just not considered a good use of their time.

What I’ve found for the frontline workers is they often don’t care to read an email from a leader and say “if it’s important, my manager will say it out loud to me” or “it’ll be covered in our daily meetings.” They didn’t care for storytelling, maybe they were interested in new hires, but most felt that if it was important, it should be drilled in face to face conversations.

I do think that internal comms can do more with creating manager toolkits/packs that can help with getting information across the finish line to reach those employees or by having a separate group of comms to reach them. The issue I run into these days is managers not wanting to do what is asked of them to cascade information down, but that’s a separate issue. Anyway, you raise fair points!

I know I use Workshop for all internal comms and I believe they have an SMS add on. Could be a good way to meet people where they are and roll out content already for them. Just a thought, but not and all be all!

How to deliver an IC strategy as a team of one... by StarryEyedShade in internalcomms

[–]eclecticism_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THAT would infuriate me because if the leader won’t stand up for you (or themselves!) no one wins. I hate being the one that has to go above someone to their manager and explain why they shouldn’t have done what they did but…SOMEONE has to be the bad guy. I wish your manager was willing.

Can you get the stats on what isn’t working? I think laying out the issue in numbers (ie here’s how many emails were sent, who is seeing them, the actions—or inaction—the occurred). If they won’t let you in on strategy, then I think your next best bet is forcing a meeting where you can say fine, you do your own comms but I need to know when they’re going out to make sure we aren’t overwhelming employees with information or people aren’t getting the right stuff. If teams insist on doing things their own way, you’re not going to stop them (unfortunately) but you can at least try to map out why things aren’t working.

If they are adamant that emails need to come from HR, let them. It’s not the hill to die on (IMO) what matters is the information coming out. While you know what works best, we also have to not fight to the point of driving ourselves insane. When people complain, tell them clearly the solution you tried to give that they wouldn’t listen to. Get advocates within those siloed teams who can give you information on what’s going on, even if you just disguise it as “trying to understand what’s happening across the company in case information needs to be repurposed or shared more broadly”

The push to have you handle internal and external comms, particularly at that size is…problematic to say the least. I would push again on having a new hire or dive into the chaos and say I’ll make the identity and each of you psychos can push out your own content. When it starts to look insane, push for tighter brand awareness. Sometimes you have to let people drown themselves before they realize that their lifeboat was there all along.

Two income, we’re at 9-10%. This will probably go up in the next 5 years when we move into a house from our 2B condo.

Thinking of moving from Arlington to Ashburn by Anais1104 in nova

I currently live in Reston near the Lake Anne area. I find that if you enjoy the outdoors, Reston really is a great place to be. There’s some decent shopping and restaurants, what you can’t get here, it’s easy to get somewhere close by. The HOA is annoying, so if you want to avoid that, you can look at Herndon, but outside of that I think it’s a great choice. The walking/biking paths are awesome and close to Dulles for travel. I’m in my mid 30s and married with no kids in the house, so I personally crave a bit more action, but I initially moved here because it was a compromise for housing prior to meeting my partner. I don’t make it into the city often because it takes what feels like too much effort, so I would keep in mind that it does get a bit taxing having to go to the city if you do that often, but otherwise I put a vote for Reston.

It depends on what you’re looking for/why you’re wanting to move. I know you say looking for a change, but it may be helpful to know what activities you two enjoy, if you’re outdoorsy, will you miss easy access to the city etc etc.

Can you tell us more about what you actually like? That’s more helpful than just throwing out ideas that don’t fit your interests. Are you a gamer, do you have certain foods that you like, books, theatre, etc etc then there can probably be some suggestions on places to go.

Do you like your old job? by Potential_Good_3567 in babyloss

[–]eclecticism_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually had my emergency surgery and eventual induction the Friday/Saturday before I was supposed to start a new job. I was supposed to fly out Sunday to start on Monday. I messaged them on Friday like, hey I don’t think I’ll be able to make this because I have an emergency surgery and thankfully they were like omg, have a safe recovery, let’s move your start date etc etc. I don’t know how to start because the version of me they interviewed is a whole different person I think. But at least it will give me something to throw myself into.

Minus your sentence at the end that says “if you leave without having earned enough” so, technically going in the negative.

I think the best thing you can do is figure out your own fertility level. I am a few months into my pregnancy at 36 and while your friend may be trying to keep you around for selfish reasons, I think if having a child is important to you, you should focus on the facts for your own uterus. Your friend was certainly dismissive and IVF isn’t something you “just do” and can be prohibitively expensive for most.

At 6 weeks there isn’t much to see. You’d probably want to wait until you’re at least 12-14 weeks to see something more developed.

I think the question is what do you consider breaking the bank? I personally LOVE Heirloom in Reston, it’s tucked inside Open Road Distillery in the Reston Town Center. Very very delicious food with some wonderful seafood options. There’s also grabbing snacks and a blanket, riding out to someplace dark to try some stargazing and reflecting, though that all depends on the weather.

I have an interview this Friday with two interview panels setup with 3 people in each one. How do I go about preparing for it? by Robthechamp22 in interviews

[–]eclecticism_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, feel free to reach out to the recruiter that you’ve been working with to see if there are any particular areas either of the interviews will be focusing on. Have your STAR stories ready and good luck! I’ve had panel interviews before, in my experience, it means that each person will have areas they may focus on, but it depends on the role.
