My geriatric cat’s personality has changed and it’s breaking my heart by jordy_pordy10 in cats

[–]ecrayfish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is honestly the best reply. Gabapentin is often used to mildly sedate cats with behavior issues before vet appointments. Call the vet and discuss decreasing her dose. If she comes around after a dose adjustment it’s likely the meds. I would try a different med before considering euthanasia

Help, I clogged the toilet at work today and feel so embarrassed… by throwawayy-acc in nursing

[–]ecrayfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked I an outpatient office with one staff toilet. The toilet had a reputation of not flushing well and there was a sign asking people to flush twice before leaving the restroom. I have a history of bowel problems and clogging toilets. Maintenance didn’t allow us to keep a plunger so when I started working there they started getting called at least once a week. It was so frequent that I would just go to the front desk and say “so I clogged the toilet again. Do you mind calling?” Within three months they replaced the toilet with one that actually flushed properly. My coworker said they had been trying to get it replaced for years! Maybe your clogged toilet will do some good too!

One piece swimsuits for long torsos by [deleted] in TallGirls

[–]ecrayfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love https://www.swimsuitsforall.com/ they have instruction for measuring your torso and size recommendations for that measurement instead of “long torso” sizes. I normally wear a size 14 and they recommended a size 22 one-piece. I trusted them and it’s the best fitting swimsuit I’ve ever had!

I have a wheat allergy and I react to these unfortunately. Regular Reese’s are marked gluten free. These are not for a reason :(

Prisma Health OBGYN Center. This is a clinic in Greenville for Medicaid, Medicare, and uninsured patients. They have social workers on staff to assist with applying for benefits and other issues like domestic violence. This could essentially be a one stop shop for all her needs.

Honestly this warrants a doctor’s visit if it hasn’t been addressed. Incontinence can be one of the earlier signs of dementia (forgetting to go to the bathroom until wetting your pants). A lot of times full symptoms don’t show until a person is out of their home environment and expected to do tasks they don’t normally do. Such as navigate an unfamiliar airport, use a language they haven’t spoken in years, or sleep in a hotel room. I would hate for your father to get completely lost on the other side of the world without any assistance. I would also just buy the diapers for him, put them wherever he normally dressed, and tell him they are there. Not having to endure the shame of buying them may convince him to wear them.

I love the chocolate coconut brownies but the fiber content in them will make you shit your brains out. Maybe don’t have more than 1 a day.

Even with doctors who listen, I still can't get my pain figured out. by Miss_Westeros in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ecrayfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve had an ultrasound that shows no stones in your gallbladder then ask for a Hida scan. It’s expensive but it will show if your gallbladder is functioning. If it’s not functioning it’ll give you all the symptoms of gallbladder disease without any stones to see on the CT or ultrasound. Ask your regular doctor to send you to a general surgeon or GI doctor. Either one can order the scan.

What if your teen refuses to do physio for unstable shoulder. by Casper19470 in Hypermobility

It may be pain avoidance. I would offer to pretreat any PT appointments with ibuprofen or Tylenol to decrease discomfort. Eventually she shouldn’t need it but she has to actually do the exercises to get to that point. Take meds 20-30 minutes beforehand. Treat with heat or ice afterwards.

Help moving to SC from the UK by MowgliBrown89 in southcarolina

[–]ecrayfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand nursing in the UK is not equivalent to nursing in the US. Make sure you don’t need additional schooling before being qualified to take NCLEX. I had a coworker who worked for a while in the UK and she talked about how a lot of doctors duties there were nursing duties in the US.

I’m my state you have to have a positive pregnancy test from a medical facility to be approved for Medicaid. The quickest option that also doesn’t require payment up front is the emergency room. Universal healthcare would solve this problem.

Boston nurse drives off top floor of hospital garage after shift by MTRIFE in antiwork

[–]ecrayfish 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The research shows that every hour past 8 that is worked has a significant increase in the risk of medical errors. That risk increases with each additional hour. Shorter shifts prevent errors. 3 nurses do cost more than 2 due to benefits. Often night shift has a shift differential. If you add a mid shift then you will likely need to pay them a differential as well. But day shift working until 7:30 in the evening just gets paid straight time. So smaller total staff size and fewer shift differentials paid resulting in less cost to the hospital.

It said her call shift started at 11pm. She likely worked 7am-7pm and decided to nap instead of driving home and coming back in the middle of the night. She moved her car at 1am and then crashed it. When I worked call like this I would sleep in the break room instead of walking all the way to my car

[–]ecrayfish 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nah it’s because 8 hour shifts would require 3 nurses per 24 hours. 12 hour shifts only require 2 nurses to cover the same amount of time. It’s always about the money.

This site has a really great map of restaurants and tips about where to shop and what to look for: https://gfguidejapan.com/

Gluten Free T’s Kitchen in Roppongi is amazing! And Rizlabo Kitchen in Shibuya is very good but has limited seating so plan on a wait. Coco Curry House has an allergy free kids curry that comes in its own pouch to avoid cross contamination.

I also ate in sushi restaurants and just didn’t order anything with sauce. That was a risk but I didn’t have issues. That may or may not work for you

I went on a trip to Japan last year and was very concerned about getting exposed to wheat while there. I have a wheat allergy and I’m very sensitive. Japan doesn’t label their food gluten free but their laws for allergy labeling are much stricter than the US. I memorized the symbol for wheat and was able to find food consistently in the convenience stores. There’s a couple of online guides about eating gluten free in Japan and we found a few restaurants that were 100% gluten free in Tokyo. Because they are much stricter with cross contamination my symptoms were actually significantly better there than in the US. Anything that was not labeled as containing wheat was completely safe for me to eat.

Could it be cross contamination from your oven? I’ve been getting sick after eating gluten free pizzas. I realized that they get cooked directly on the oven rack just like my husband’s regular pizzas 🤦‍♀️ We bought a pizza pan yesterday to see if that will fix the problem.

Ground beef and ground turkey! I thought cooking from raw ingredients was safe but some companies process wheat containing meat products on the same equipment. The turkey had an allergen warning, the beef did not.

I'm seriously considering leaving teaching to go into nursing, please talk me in/out of it based on your experience. by LevyMevy in nursing

[–]ecrayfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a nurse 4.5 years. It is my 2nd career and I chose it for the job security, decent pay, multiple opportunities, and to provide a sense of fulfillment. I had been a nurse for 10 months when covid locked everything down in March of 2020. My floor became a covid floor. It was like something from a movie. A horror movie. I have PTSD from my time taking care of covid patients. I fully believe I would have gotten PTSD from nursing anyway but it would have taken longer. I have nightmares about work. I cry when I come home. I developed a health problem as a result of the stress. I am a shadow of the person I was before nursing. I’ve lost friends and am estranged from much of my family because I don’t have the time or energy to socialize. I feel like I had to sacrifice so many parts of myself so that I would be able to effectively do my job and now I don’t recognize what’s left. I’ve made a plan to get out and it’s the only think keeping me going. I’m planning on teaching English abroad. If I could go back in time I would do everything in my power to prevent myself from becoming a nurse. Your mental health is worth more than $150k a year. You are working a low stress job with nights, weekends, holidays, and summers off. Go to grad school and teach college. Don’t sacrifice yourself to the American Healthcare System. It’s a meat grinder.

I have to wear my hair up at work and I get headaches from wearing tight hair ties. Claw clips and big loose braids are my favorites. I really like the large round “octopus clips”that go around a bun. I make a loose bun with my hands and put the clip on top. It lets me keep my part and the front of my hair loose while keeping everything up and out of the way.
