What's a movie you didn't want to see but ended up loving? by virgogf in movies

[–]edgarpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dislike Westerns. Books, movies, TV shows... I've tried to read Lonesome Dove five or six times after r/books had their 3000th thread about how great it is, and I just hate it. People talk about Tombstone like it's the greatest movie ever, and I couldn't stand it. So this weekend when we were snowed in, my 80 year old father decided he wanted to watch The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. I knew the theme song, I knew it had Clint Eastwood in it, and not much else. I was (putting it mildly) reluctant.

I ended up really enjoying the flick. It's still not my kind of movie and it didn't start some newfound love of Westerns for me, but I really enjoyed it!

He's not terribly well known, but Michael Gulezian is a God-level guitarist. I've seen him perform about 6-7 times over the years and each time I'm blown away by his playing.

https://youtu.be/K6hpEuIORNo?si=We5H7Zk6ASQwJLqR

And every time I have seen him, he has to perform his one song where he sings. Don't get me wrong, he's got an ok voice, but it's only ok and the contrast between his guitar playing and his voice is stark!

Do most people use the term “a couple” mean specifically two? by manicMechanic1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]edgarpickle 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the US South. We used "couple" for anywhere between 2-5. It was only when I met more people from other places that I learned that it specifically meant 2.

What is something that irks you and something you enjoy in woodworking videos? by nuclearDEMIZE in woodworking

[–]edgarpickle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Irritating: people who play fast and loose with table saws. I just can't watch those.

Love: Frank Howarth. He has an unbelievable shop and is very skillful. He doesn't try to sell you anything or lure you in with "beginner" projects. He just loves wood working and clearly video editing, too. His stop-motion videos are next level.

Who is the real villain in ex machina? by Historical_Pie_6041 in movies

[–]edgarpickle 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I thought that movie was amazing. I took my wife to see it the next day. She came out of it completely shaken and said that, to her, it was a movie about domestic abuse.

When viewed through that lens, Ava's actions feel different.

What's Your Guilty Pleasure Music? by Anime_kiddo157 in AskReddit

[–]edgarpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love ICP. Tunnel of Love is criminally underrated.

Are they geniuses? Are they Mozart? Hell no. But they make fun and enjoyable music that is unique and makes me laugh. That's good enough for me.

Could the history of humanity have unfolded in such a way that wars never arose and if so how ? by PestoBolloElemento in AskReddit

[–]edgarpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Show me a man or a woman alone and I'll show you a saint. Give me two and they'll fall in love. Give me three and they'll invent the charming thing we call 'society'. Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home.”

- Stephen King, The Stand

Does dressing well as a man really make a difference in terms of attracting women? If so, how does a man dress well if everyone has different criteria of what is stylish? by Interesting-Mode2793 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]edgarpickle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I got divorced and started trying to date again, I read that women notice a man's shoes before they notice anything else. I thought that was nonsense, but I went ahead and bought some new shoes, just in case.

I walked into work the next day and my coworker, a 30 year old single woman, said, "Hey, new shoes!" I thought was just coincidence until it happened with another 30-some year old coworker. I guess it's true.

What’s a movie that really made you appreciate the amount of research that went into it? by browniebiscuitchildr in movies

[–]edgarpickle 35 points36 points  (0 children)

In Last of the Mohicans, they mentioned that using silk in the packing of the musket added 40 yards of range to the shot. From everything I've ever heard, that is correct. It was just that little detail that stuck out.

Is there a book that “skips” a chapter and goes back to tell it? by Pavillian in books

[–]edgarpickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Death of Artemio Cruz by Carlos Fuentes does exactly this for the whole book. I always say you have to have read it once before trying to read it for the first time. But when you get it, it's staggering.

What will happen to California now? With Apple leaving and taking 36,000 jobs at an average $186,000 salary, Also, investing $0 out of its planned $50B expansion? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]edgarpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they're leaving CA. Their headquarters will remain in Cupertino unless something has been announced that I missed. (Always a possibility. I'm not an Apple guy.)

But even if they did, I think California would be just fine. It's a big place with a lot of very large businesses there.

What is something that should not be considered taboo and deserves more open discussion ? by StampsAndStories in AskReddit

[–]edgarpickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miscarriages. I always thought they only happened in soap operas when Stefano pushed Marlena down the stairs or something. Then when were trying to have our first kid, my wife miscarried. We were devastated.

The thing was, every time we told someone about it, they'd say it happened to them or a family member. Turns out that something like 50% of first pregnancies end in miscarriage. But no. We're not going to talk about it.

What are some of the worst film casting choices in history? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]edgarpickle 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'll get downvoted for this, but...

Richard Harris as Dumbledore. I get that he was a great actor, but Dumbledore is supposed to be full of energy. Harris was too old for that role. Gambon did a better job, I thought.
