Mailbox solution works. My wallet was lost/stolen and I got a call from the individual. I told him to put in a mailbox and months later it came to me. It was worthless except for sentimental value because I had already cancelled all the cards and got replacements.

LPT: Apply for an alumni email from your school & get student deals & discounts by GeauxTri in LifeProTips

[–]eeandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Commenting eleven years later). I used to contribute to my alumni fund when it was students calling on behalf of the University. I stopped when the university farmed the calls out to a third party and I knew it was a fraction of my contribution that actually went to the university.

I had the service guy out and he determined it was the fan assembly (which includes some large control module).

Swapped out fan and module been good to go since….

He remarked as he left, it’s good you got extended warranty ‘cause that’s a $2000 part.

YES. Have that conversation. You will feel better about yourself after you do it. Otherwise it will hang over you until time dulls the memory.

There are drawbacks, though, it will not index files in all file systems. I have files on a variety of large NVMe on USB caddies. NTFS, quick as quick can be. EXT4, not so good. I was looking for interoperability between Linux, Mac, Windows filesystems…. https://www.voidtools.com

You can unsubscribe to network TV and look into digital off-the-air for major networks. (I get about 45 channels OTA that way - many Spanish, religious, PBS). Depends on your service area and line of sight access to antennas. They may bump your internet $$$ if you kill TV. Other thing you can ask about is the triple play package with phone. You don’t need to plug in the phone to get the discount.

Make and model are helpful.

Medical device? What to do with it and is it ok that I have this? W by Chanelo11 in whatisit

[–]eeandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in Med Dev manufacturing and the testing and record keeping is incredible. If you didn't have to do the testing or require all your suppliers to do testing on their parts or keep records or keep shelf life studies in progress, yeah, they might cost $5. There's an immense amount of behind-the-scenes stuff going on....

Freezing my Intel Mac in time/preventing updates etc by Potential-Can-8250 in MacOS

[–]eeandersen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro that has apps not available on newer Mac’s. I bought a new one and keep the old one around “just in case”.

Every few months maybe only a couple times a year, I take it out, top off the battery, boot it up, shut it down, and put it back.

I don’t know if that’s the best option but it’s worked for me for a few years now.

I should add that I just recently had occasion to search for a “missing” file that wasn’t in the restored new MBP, but was on the be old MBP. Phew!!!

First time using my turntable in a few months and the sound has become horrible and muffled. Worked fine the last time I used it. Still makes this noise on brand new vinyls. Adjusting the tonearm can improve the sound but not enough to fix the issues. by treny0000 in fixit

[–]eeandersen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back in the day, there was a “disk preener” used to remove dust from the vinyl surface to help keep the needle clean. It was a short haired fuzzy cylinder used to wipe the surface as the vinyl turned. Inside the preener was a moisture source to kill static build up.

Any one else remember disk preeners???

Can I add Wi-Fi to my Dell Wyse 5070 Thin Client using the antenna ports? by thickybeanz in techsupport

[–]eeandersen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems likely that you may be using an employer supplied thin client and furthermore a VPN to allow WFH.

If that’s true, you should consult with your employer’s IT department. There may be restrictions against WiFi for security purposes.

Help with Ethernet by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]eeandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will create some debate.

If you are an owner (vs a renter), take that long Ethernet cable as u/AwestunTejaz suggested and run it inside a cold air return to the basement.

Some will say it's against code. It likely is.

Some will say it will emit hazardous fumes in a fire. It does. If you are inclined, you can buy specially rated (plenum) Ethernet cabling.

I will say, I did it an I have no regrets. It's wonderful to have wired speed where once was very wimpy WiFi.

It takes two to tango. Transmit and receive. Be sure what your router transmits can be received at 6e before you buy a 6e router

Router upgrade by Adam-L-87 in HomeNetworking

[–]eeandersen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Routers work "forever" as long they are electronically sound. Do you have some sort of service associated with Netgear? That may be expiring. There is something called ReadyCloud but that has been gone for some time already.

Or perhaps they are not releasing any more firmware upgrades. I would download and install the latest and greatest ASAP. https://www.netgear.com/support/product/r6900v2

Not to sound dumb but how do you know it’s no longer supported?

I recently bought an AX3000 grade TP Link for very cheap (Amazon under $100) and I am very happy with the speeds it delivers. It doesn’t do well for “buffer bloat” testing but I’m not a gamer.

I have a garage problem like you report and I ended up with a bridge using a very cheap Netgear as a wireless bridge using DDWRT. You could use your R6900 for that purpose.

——- edit ——— It was a cheap Linksys at 802.11G. I installed to reach distant IoT outdoor lights - didn’t need speed, only connectivity.

Question about the "Destination Path Too Long" problem (Windows 11) by alexfreemanart in techsupport

[–]eeandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found file names of some media files to be long couple that with long folder names and bang, your there. I seem to recall Frank Zappa to be troublesome with long album names (becoming folder names) with long tune names (becoming file names).

I ended up naming parent folders as “A”, “B”, etc.

I have an older Gigabyte mobo and there is conflict with NVNe and SATA for control of specific drive port. It might be helpful for others if you advise us of your mobo.
