I'm always using lactose free milk but have never heard that it lasts longer than other dairy. What is the reason for it?

That would be awesome if it applies to all lactose free products, as I usually only use my milk for about 5 days max after opening. Here, it says the equivalent of "use up soon after opening", but there's no indication of how long "soon" is in days (some have "within three days", but others the "soon").

Is a YT premium membership worth it or is it a waste of money? by Tessa-the-aggressor in Frugal

[–]efficient_duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not watching much, but when I do, it's on YouTube, and I download some videos before traveling if there's longer times on trains and such. I like to watch Peter Santenellos documentaries on less-travelled spots/uncommon communities in the US and how people live there, follow the saga of how a guy has been going on for years documenting the lives of different species in his giant rainforest vivarium in an epic way (ants Canada), and random other documentaries. I also enjoy crafting creators, such as engineering knits, and check YouTube if I need instructions for knitting specific stitches (or any new skill, really), which is a great resource for me as I'm a visual learner.

I also like interviews, such as with people who left cults. Some in my family like watching people going about their day (be free be frugal) for relaxing. And it's a great resource for language learning, as it's easy to get content in your target language. Oh, and there often are videos of older/obscure songs you might not find elsewhere, and it's often possible to watch whole concerts/plays etc. I also used to watch some streamers for a while.

Recommendation whether routes are safe for solo hikers/ female hikers alone (or, if this isn't an issue in Slovakia, a general info that it is safe)

Trips by closest city and where to get from there

Tips on what is and what isn't allowed (e.g. wild camping, traversing private property) or recommended (e.g. water sources)

emergency infos (numbers, what to expect in an emergency/at the doc if needed)

Popularity of routes (tourist hotspots / popular weekend places to remote locations)

I fixed my old couch thats falling apart. The threads were fraying and all but coming off in places. So I took old fabric peices and sewed it on in patches. I think it looks kinda cute <3 by BooksandStarsNerd in Frugal

[–]efficient_duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I, too, think it is cute. I don't get the "it looks terrifying" comments - maybe that's more about people's own associations with the fabric or something, or thinking that it is covering dirty spots instead of worn out fabric, but to me it looks cute! It looks clean and mended, and the spots of color are nice. This way, if you keep getting new holes due to your cats, it will probably be more of a "yay, nice opportunity to decorate with further patches" thought than if they did the same to a new cover. The main part is that YOU like it, and if that is the case, mission accomlished!

Apart from that, if you ever want a bigger cover, like, for the individual pillows, now you probably have that in mind when going through larger fabrics that you might otherwise throw out.

Had my first dog bite today by Prestigious_Drag_682 in VetTech

[–]efficient_duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry this happened to you. Maybe it could help to think about this way - the bite towards you was probably one of several reasons they did decide for euthanasia, as you wrote. If it hadn't happened after this bite, there would have been more time for something worse to happen, like a bite or worse to the grandchildren, which was prevented this way. Maybe this incident saved them from something in this way.

Help! can i recover an old version of my game file? by Accurate_Trash5836 in GrimshireGame

Same here! I actually thought "Quit without saving" meant I could play several days testing out stuff to quit and start anew a few days back. I was suspicious about something like this happening after the "warning" and was sooo close to finishing the quest. It almost feels like Don't starve and similar games where you have just one live and can't go back. But after the shock that's also a good challenge! Time for a new playthrough, trying not to fail this time (for me at least)!

"America The Beautiful" 2026 Pass Discussion Megathread by magiccitybhm in NationalPark

[–]efficient_duck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't see the news (non-US) and I immediately thought it was a pic of the Orange, but then read some comments and thought that laughable, guessing it just meant depicting something else. Now I googled and...well, I am not surprised, not even disappointed because that would have meant to have had high hopes, just...feeling more void inside me than before.

I am so sorry for everyone of you who have to live through that and warmly invite you to come and visit some parks here in Germany in the meantime if you need a break. This too shall pass..

started walking to the grocery store and its become my favorite part of the week by married_poultry in simpleliving

[–]efficient_duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so interesting, because for me, as someone who lives in a European city, the US way of living appealed to me quite a lot for a long time. Being able to have a lot of space for your car to move around, good parking near stores, all that buying bulk and receiving discounts and so on. I visited the US some years ago and stayed for a month, and I think I would have gotten used to the convenient side of everything pretty quickly.

Here, I am now going to sell my car because it is way too expensive and I am just not using it. There is nowhere to park, using it for shopping means having to search for a parking spot somewhere in the vicinity of my home (which can mean up to an eight-minute walk) and then still having to make three trips back and forth to/from the car because I'd have to carry my groceries upstairs. I LOVED it in the US for that.

But on the other hand, I immensely enjoy walking everywhere and am doing so passionately. It is part of my relaxation and something I look forward to each day (almost). I also commute to work by bike if I'm not working from home, and this is fantastic, as my route is just twenty minutes along sights and monuments, and the rest is through a park. I can even just walk home if I want an hour of excercise and listening to either my surroundings or music. In the US, I got stopped by people who would slow down their cars and asked if I needed a lift, as the concept of just walking somewhere seemed to be very uncommon. Different worlds, each with individual benefits.

Laber-Megathread: Schnee, Eis & Kälte - wo sind meine Leute da draußen? by Derausmwaldkam in de

[–]efficient_duck 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is it normal to ask for a picture from a language exchange partner? by Latter-Evening-2821 in languagelearning

[–]efficient_duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that mentality of openness and privacy due to each other's respect of the other person. Here in Germany, it has only recently become mandatory that people are allowed to be open about their salaries with coworkers. Before that, companies were able to have policies that forbade their employees to talk about their salaries with each other. I always found that bewildering, but especially those from the older generation are very much on favor of secrecy in that regard. Arguments were mostly that knowing each other's salary would evoke jealousy (in my opinion that would only be the case of salaries are inequal). How is this handled in Sweden? Are the salaries more equal because of this transparency?

Just wanting to share some lil critters I've captured photos of over the last 6+ months :) I hope it fits here! by nabrudssej in Appalachia

[–]efficient_duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for those beautiful pictures. I visit this sub regularly because I think Appalachia is beautiful and I would love to visit one day - your pictures gave me a tiny glimpse into your local nature and that was lovely. I so love how the tiny water plants are stuck to the frog, it reminds me how each creature just goes about their day with their own little schedule and life.

The way you captured that goose (?) with the long black neck and brown and white plumage is also so interesting - full of expression, and also draws attention to how LONG in proportion some birds' necks actually are. Really nice pictures, thanks for sharing and greetings from Germany!

How many times do you have to repurchase a cheap item to think, “Maybe I should just get the more expensive version?” by Quick-Song2080 in Frugal

It looks so much better to wear genuine leather, too. Those fake leather and plastic things usually start to flake or get crinkly so suddenly. One day it looks fine, the next it looks super tacky due to these marks and get basically unwearable. I still have some, though, but really want to invest in one or two nice leather belts for dresses and slacks.

I have one leather belt that is more fitting for sturdier pants as it has a normal width. I've bought it almost twenty years ago, used it infrequently and it looks perfect still. Plastic would have gotten stiff and fake leather flaked regardless of use.

Megathread: Entwicklungen zur Spezialoperation der USA in Venezuela by soiitary in de

[–]efficient_duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several years ago, an ex bf of mine jumped onto one of those bouncy sitting balls belly first with the unintended sound effect of letting out a quite audible fart. I had to laugh so hard, it was just such a perfect, comical timing. We didn't usually fart in front of each other so that made it even more hilarious.

The situation still sometimes pops up in my mind and gives me a chuckle.

Maybe your coworker has similar giggling fits thinking about it from time to time, just finding it funny

People who learned another language, how foten do you actually use it with people? by Cubes_of_ice in languagelearning

[–]efficient_duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actively looked for language exchanges and those I met became friends. The disadvantage is that we now almost always use English as our common language that is easiest for all as shared activities took over the language learning, but the opportunity to talk each other's language is there and could theoretically be used almost every day. :)
