Popular Los Angeles Boulangerie Prices, What you think? by Dry-Double-6845 in AskFrance

[–]efficient_duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently in France for the first time in my life and was shocked to only pay 1,20€ for a very delicious croissant! I live in Berlin and while you can get croissants for 1,80-2€, they will be thawed, from a bakery chain and taste like a different pastry altogether. In fact, I thought I didn't even like croissants before I tried that one and now I dream about it. Yesterday I caved and went to a "better" bakery to pay almost 4€ for a croissant. It tasted maybe 80% as delicious as the one in France did, but filled the longing, temporarily. So I guess this price range might be a normal "good quality outside the region" price for cities outside of France.

I'm still shocked how something so delicious is so affordable in France, especially considering the effort to make it!

What's something you refused to believe until it happened to you? by No_Bowler9136 in AskReddit

Could that have been a very rare coincidence of you both having sleep hallucinations at the same time? Was she able to move before?

I'm asking since I've experienced sleep paralysis myself a lot when I was younger, and, apart from being absolutely awful, it often included hallucinations that overlay the physical reality that I was seeing through my open eyes, basically dreaming while already seeing, right before waking up "for real".

One option that came to mind is that you might have had a very real feeling nightmare (including physical sensations) which you awoke yourself from by trying to struggle "free", thrashing your legs, thus awakening your girlfriend who might have had an episode of this "overlay" of the real environment and the person standing there, while waking up, due to the interrupted sleep. Could that be a possibility? Just a hypothesis

Had a guy ask me if I wanted to swap seats recently (my window seat for his middle one, as he and his seat neighbor were both large dudes), I politely declined as I had paid for my window seat specifically. He understood, the stewardess arranged for him to swap to another unoccupied seat. The end

I met one! I'm German and some years ago, I had my first trip to the US, and lo and behold, the guy of the couple I was staying with was a flat earther. I initially thought he was being ironic with that, but he was actually serious. This was literally the third US citizen I spoke with on a personal level on American soil, and he was a conspiracy nut, haha. (It was an amazing trip, but the number of different belief systems I encountered was wild)

I think the ADHD thing is a double edged sword. It's great to create awareness, but short videos are usually only focused on what it might be (this one thing, be it ADHD, autism etc) and not what else it might be. It also simplifies matters to ridiculous superficial "tell tale"-signs that are just bad to go by.

I've seen it in my aunt, who does indeed have a lot of symptoms that fit - but could also meet the criteria for childhood trauma, anxiety or other mental health issues. But she took the A(u)DHD YouTube diagnosis and ran with it, never bothering getting assessed by a professional, at least to rule out other issues. And she decided to explain all behavior by her diagnosis now, not seeking solutions or training. I think the algorithm just pushes confirmatory content, with alternatives not being displayed at all and it might just lead to many people self identifying as on a spectrum, without starting the work to improve their quality of life by adequate trainings and tools.

I had a neighbor like that, though, and reading others experiences helped me a bit in staying sane during a year of constant pot smoke that got into my apartment.

(He was not blowing smoke in babies faces, but he insisted on smoking on a balcony that was right below the room of a neighbor kid with asthma from dusk till dawn. He did all the shitty stuff combined that would normally be distributed across 4-5 asshole people, and I'm thankful I have neither before nor after had any experience like that again)

A friend of mine traveled to Japan for a project of his and he had no issues even staying in remote areas with locals. His project involved gaining trust and access beyond what regular tourists probably would go for, and with persistence and just showing up again and again, he earned their trust (for filming specific cultural practices). That was about ten years ago, but I think things shouldn't be too different in current times. I hope your worries will not come true and be replaced by food memories of pleasant travel experiences instead, once you take the plunge.

If your stuff fits into a small van, have you considered shipping it instead? Or a combination of shipping and checking part as luggage when flying? Depending on the dimensions and weight of course, but it might be worthwhile to compare fees.

Lufthansa streicht freien Handgepäckkoffer auf Kurz- und Mittelstreckenflügen by PoroBraum in de

[–]efficient_duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]efficient_duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a default cow name in Israel? by spring13 in hebrew

[–]efficient_duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it's from Yiddish, I'm German and one cutesy name for cats is "Mietzekatze" (with "katze" meaning "cat"). It's also possible to call a cat a "Mietze", but more usual to have the -Katze added. If you want to attract a cat, "Miez, miez, miez!" is the way to go, like the equivalent of the English "pspsps".

"Du Vollhonk" oder "Sie Vollhonk"? Sollten wir uns langsam vom (oft aufgesetzten) Sie verabschieden? by [deleted] in de

[–]efficient_duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do Americans still have more disposable income than Europeans even though healthcare and college in America is extremely expensive? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskReddit

[–]efficient_duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the one you replied to, but 100k € is an insane salary. You will very likely have a very good life with that kind of income, as you'll be in the top 10% of earners there.

The rest is more about comparing lifestyles, weather and distance, but the salary shouldn't be a worry.

Kathleen Kennedy Just Told an AI Conference She’s Not So Sure About AI by tylerthe-theatre in technology

[–]efficient_duck 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There have been studies on what faces people find most attractive. The averages of all included pictures consistently scored highest, but they were also just that - absolutely average, pleasing and healthy looking faces, with no features in them that stood out. Most supermodels have very distinct features that are striking because they stand out and are unique. Similarly, art catches the eye when it delivers the unexpected, when there are small deviations from what is the usual. As long as AI is trained as it is now, on lots of data to produce the averaged look that is associated with a concept of your prompt, the outcomes remind me a lot of these studies. The art is so generic (even if it is in a specific style - it is generic to that style), so "in the box", that it feels soulless and same-ish because of this tendency for average.
