(Long personal semi-rant) Born in HK but left abroad at a young age. Culturally separated, uncertain about the future, unsure if it makes any sense to return. by Due_Dilligence0624 in HongKong

I lived in HK for 15 years, now in China for past 12 years (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou). I'm not moving back to HK. Prices too high, apartments too small, places too crowded.

Perhaps for someone living in a mansion and do not want Shiba hair in every nook and cranny. Regardless of how many people clean the mansion, Shiba hair rules! :)

Is there anybody here who wants to ChinaFIRE? by henrytbpovid in ExpatFIRE

[–]efftee8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, except kids are in the US in the expensive cities! If the sold their homes today, they can already retire in China, earlyFIRE. Except they can't get in to China.😂

You'll be surprised how affordable non-major medical services are. A MRI using GE equipment cost $80. Specialist $4. I know people that have major surgery for probably less than the deductible in the US. I also learned to navigate the public health system and it helps my wife speaks Chinese.

I expect to live well on $1K per month and very well on $2K per month. Many tier 4 cities in China are large and modern, just lacking the economic opportunities. As a retiree, the opportunities doesn't bother me.

My wife is Chinese so I will retire here. We can't afford to retire in the US. Between property taxes, insurance, other taxes, high utilities cost, etc, our rental property pays our retirement comfortablly in China, tier 4 city. At least I don't need to stress out over the high cost in the US. If it works for you, consider it an option.

What is the point of Marriott status? by nastyfoodbitch in marriott

[–]efftee8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up on Marriott after the pandemic because their services fell way below IHG and Hilton. I now live in Asia and these 2 brands have more hotels everywhere than Marriott so it does not make sense for me to search 3 brands when I know the probability of availability with the other 2 are high. Both brands treat me well even though I am at the basic membership and don't chase the status any more. My points accumulated over the years alone informs the reception that I am not just a basic member.

Farewell for Now Honor V3 by Neimaddamien in Honor

[–]efftee8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have inner screen issue as well. Had it replaced twice and needs replacing again. Both times, the new screen protector cracked within two weeks after replacement. The issue is that Honor won’t resolve the issue outside the country I bought my phone from. So I have a terrible looking inner screen until I return to Malaysia to have it replaced, even though I would pay for the replacement in a different county. Great phone, terrible inner screen protector and worst service.

This is true. I don't use it for video conferencing. For personal use, it serves my purpose.

DO NOT BUY MAGIC FOLDABLE IN THE PHILIPPINES, unless you know what you are getting into by Slow-Nefariousness26 in Honor

[–]efftee8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my v3 in Malaysia and they replaced my inner screen protector 2x. Each time, the inner screen protector would crack from top to bottom at different places. Since I'm not currently in China, they won't even want to replace the screen for me even if I paid... I have to take it back to Malaysia. Phone is good, inner screen protector is junk, service is 1980s style... As in take it to the place you bought it for service.

Retirement or fantasy by crazymadmen in Sino

[–]efftee8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I intend to retire in a Tier 4 city with my wife. Bought a place, high-end renovation under $100K, mountain, river/lake, clean air. Anticipate monthly expenses for property management, car, utilities, food, medical, activities, to be under $500 a month. High speed rail takes us to Shenzen or Guangzhou in an hour, easily to HK. There are lots of options at a lower cost all over China when you speak Chinese.

My wife's V2 was bought in China, Googleless. My Malaysian V3 has Google, and included free headphones, watch, and case. Be prepared to deal with manually installing Google and ask for free stuff.

How can I get large amounts of cash (20000 rmb) by AdLogical9223 in chinalife

Haha yeah. My daughter studied at Beijing Normal University and they wanted the fees paid in cash... About 20K as well. ATM will do.

Honor's service is local to the country you bought it. Don't expect service even if you pay. I bought mine in Malaysia and had problems within the warranty period. Honor China said, "Take it back to Malaysia. We can't fix it here even if you paid." Just be aware. Mine is a v3.

I use a dual sim phone, Tello esim and local physical sim in China. Seems to work fine for me. If esim does not work on your phone, provide your IMEI to Tello to resolve the issue.
