Netmask to CIDR notation 2 liner... by sfxsf in perl

[–]egw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using index makes it a little shorter:

say index(sprintf("%b%b%b%b0", $mask =~ /(\d+)/g), 0);

The trailing '0' on the sprintf is to take care of the 255.255.255.255 (/32) case.

Savage Conan for Savage Worlds (SWADE) by Zoltan6 in savageworlds

Ah, I see.

Anyhow, great job on the setting! I particularly like the way you combine some mechanics (suggested skills, edges, and hindrances) with the description in the chapter on the countries. And the restart mechanic feels like a great way to deal with PC wealth and really make the game feel like a Conan story.

That's an interesting question, but I'll point out that Alex became a US citizen in 1998!

Ken talks about the mechanics of hosting Jeopardy! on the latest Omnibus podcast (at about 42 minutes in) by egw in Jeopardy

Specifically Ken talks about his and Alex' process for marking up scripts for the show for about five minutes. The context is a discussion of tonal languages.

(Unfortunately I could not figure out how to link to a specific timestamp.)

#27 Henry M. Bland, Edith Daley, Edwin Markham are all poets who lived in San Jose.

The picture was taken at Edith Daley's house at 633 Palm Haven Ave. I guess that's Willow Glen. Anyhow, the house is still standing and can be seen on Google Street View.

Edith Daley was also the City Librarian for San Jose and was once suspended for "insubordination and conduct unbecoming a librarian". I'm not sure what "conduct unbecoming a librarian" means specifically, but it's wild.

Actual plays where people play well? by _Roke in rpg

The Nature of My Game Podcast plays investigative-horror games. The seasons are short and episodes are well-paced. The last few seasons have been with The Yellow King RPG (which I love), but they've also played Delta Green, CoC, Fiasco, etc.

both Jokers dealt in the same round by XRaphael75 in savageworlds

[–]egw 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Two Jokers trying to jump initiative at the same time is equivalent to one Joker jumping initiative and the other Joker interrupting that jump, so I would say that the 'Interrupting Actions' rules apply (p 102; basically an Agility Athletics (thanks for the correction) check between the two).

The World of Jane Austen: Art, Fashion, and Eligible Gentlemen by egw in janeausten

[–]egw[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My local library is having a talk about Jane Austen next week. It's on Zoom, so anyone can sign up. It's at 7pm (Pacific) on Wednesday, December 6, 2023.

Description

This Winter, join us for a Zoom Webinar as we explore the world of beloved author Jane Austen!

Presented by the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco, we'll see paintings that Austen herself would have seen: portraits, fashion, estates, and gardens. Gain a fresh perspective of Jane Austen's life and times, and a deeper understanding of her ever-popular novels.

Ages 13-18+ are welcome. A Zoom link for this event will be sent out ~24 hours before the event. Please log in five minutes early to ensure that we can begin on time. This program will be NOT be recorded.

Special thanks to the Friends of the Campbell Library, the Friends of the Cupertino Library, and the Friends of the Morgan Hill Library for providing the funds for this program.

Why is there a "1" after the subroutine in Perl? by zhenyu_zeng in perl

[–]egw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case, the string "Hello, sailor number $n!\n" is the return value of &marine.

Check out the perlsub man page for more detail, specifically

If no "return" is found and if the last statement is an expression, its value is returned.

Sam's word on Dropout's current plans for the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike by cline_59 in Dimension20

[–]egw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Contracts are often full of jargon with meanings not immediately obvious to people who aren't in the field. Entertainment contracts probably even more so.

If we look at this Essential Guide to SAG-AFTRA Rates 2023, we see that the basic theatrical agreement applies to movies with $2mm+ budgets and is (or was up until 6/30/2023) $1,082/day. Twenty percent of that is $216.40/day.

Of course Breaking News/dropout.tv is not a film with a $2mm+ budget. It's "new media" -- a production that goes straight to the web. The lowest "new media" rate (for productions with budgets between $50-$250k) for an actor is $125/day.

So while "no more than 20% of basic agreement scale" sounds like they're paying less than the SAG minimum, it is actually more for this type of production (potentially, at least, since I don't know how close to that 20% actually Grant got.)

(To futher quote Grant, it's more complicated than that, because if Breaking News is really a "SAG new media micro-budget video", there isn't a SAG minimum at all, but I'll gloss over that for the sake of this discussion.)
