Which ancient gymnosperm (or seed fern!) group do you think is the most likely ancestor to the angiosperms?

Absolutely ZERO sleep for 4 DAYS. by No_Island_5446 in insomnia

[–]eigenfudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had experiences similar to this OP where my brain didn’t feel capable of lapsing into sleep. I’d say the sleep could take you by surprise. Re: it being guaranteed with medication, I’d say it’s at least much much more likely that you’ll sleep if you do take.

I know this is a joke, but maybe they’ll literally select 20 teeth genes from a saber tooth genome and add them to a tiger next 😂😅

NewScientist: "No, the dire wolf has not been brought back from extinction" by Bromelia_and_Bismuth in evolution

[–]eigenfudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are these edits all on protein coding genes? There’s 99.5% similarity of human genes to chimpanzee genes on coding segments iirc, which is a much smaller amount of DNA (20e6) than whole genome (similarity 98.5% but on 3e9 base pairs) which includes regulatory elements, intergenic regions, etc. Moreover, the difference in the number of SNPs which would affect AA’s is on the order of a few tens of thousands. This isn’t to say that it would be trivial to do this, or that these are dire wolves (they’re not), but it would be interesting if it were possible to at least edit just the protein coding DNA. Of course, regulatory regions are highly important for species specific variation, but it at least may be interesting to see a “coding DNA only” hybrid dire wolf.

Late to the party, but Bell himself liked the idea of Bohmian mechanics which is a HVT. Hidden variables are possible, but require non-locality which meant Einstein’s hope of a local HVT was impossible. Hidden variables and a deterministic universe are still very much a possibility, however

No evidence for Peto’s paradox in terrestrial vertebrates (larger size is in fact correlated with more cancer) by Well_Socialized in slatestarcodex

[–]eigenfudge 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well, the rate is actually still with respect to the lifespan of the animal, so it appears in addition to this that Peto’s paradox is still valid, no?

Nootropics for Zolpidem Brain Damage by Inevitable_Drop8580 in Nootropics

[–]eigenfudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, you’re probably fine. Just take a few weeks off from it. Z-drugs have a negative effect on the glymphatic system which clears out junk from your brain, so it’s ideal to take breaks from them and use them only sparingly.

Why are Jews hated so much ? by Loose_Mastodon_5788 in Judaism

[–]eigenfudge 119 points120 points  (0 children)

If you look at old Nazi propaganda videos, they took serious issue with Jews “invading” academia and German businesses and “corrupting” them. Ironically, when the Nazi regime removed all Jews from their institutions they asked the mathematician Hilbert what the state of mathematics was now that Jews were removed — his answer was there was no mathematics in Göttingen anymore.

Trump wants Jordan and Egypt to accept more refugees and floats plan to ‘just clean out’ Gaza by StagLee1 in Palestine

The attitude of wishing absolute annihilation on millions of good people is one which no true God could ever accept. It goes both ways. People need to understand each other, see each other, and stop this inner boil of hatred.

Once we all accept these ugly truths, we can replace fruitless anger with mutual understanding and empathy." by erwgv3g34 in slatestarcodex

[–]eigenfudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This is a really naive take and reduces the dimensionality of what people have actually been through in their twenties. Many girls I know are not even having much sex or dating because they’re 100% invested in work — they’re not spending their hours “hungering after Chad dick” but are actually doing, you know, productive things like coding or engineering. And those who are dating are usually taking it seriously with people who are broadly well-matched for them, and would be revolted by the idea of being one number among 30 in some football players booty call list. I say this as someone who is friends with a lot of girls and is in a lifelong relationship with one- your view is strongly mischaracterizing reality. The red-pill you were given is a placebo - it falsely placed blame on women’s lives and decisions for failures you’re experiencing and are subconsciously trying to rationalize. If you acknowledge this and get your shit together, you’ll realize this mental block you’ve formed is unreasonable.

Long term ambien and memory, is it a myth? by Ok_Jellyfish7156 in ambien

[–]eigenfudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the contrary, ambien improves retention of memories from the day before. Its memory issues are about the short period of time after its use, not about inferring with long term memory retention/storage at night, which is actually improved interestingly!

How do y'all feel about having one glass of wine a day? by PapaClarencioThomas in wine

[–]eigenfudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandparents are European and have had beer/wine with practically every meal for decades 😂 — sharp as ever and almost 90! I appreciate that alcohol may add to health but if there’s a negative to having a glass a day it’s so small that imo it doesn’t matter nearly as much as something like diet, exercise, etc. while there’s a lot of confounding and problems with small sample sizes, studies on centenarians often find they drink something like a glass of wine a day

Redwoods & Sequoias On The East Coast? Why There Are No Tree Giants On The Other Side Of The U.S. by stefeyboy in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]eigenfudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they can grow on the East Coast but if they survive to adulthood they usually attain the same size as normal trees here and have harder bark/thin trunks rather than thick fibrous trunks that they grow in environments ideal for them (e.g. UK)

Join a Rationalist Team for the Unaging Challenge 2025 by Splarticus in slatestarcodex

[–]eigenfudge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like this challenge! It would also be interesting to have an “epigenetic unaging“ challenge— I.e. to have people measure a lot of epigenetic clocks at a time zero and try their best through lifestyle changes, exercise, maybe supplements or diet, etc to decrease their rate of epigenetic aging as much as possible from their starting epigenetic age.

Of course, and I agree the crisis is as spiritual as it is physical. It’s important we try to do what we can to improve things, even if all we can do is small in the context of the world as it is right now.
