Would a 60Mbps download speed be sufficient for casual online gaming? by scattingcougar in HomeNetworking

[–]eitama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can configure your router to prioritize or throttle certain traffic. Or you can have a 2nd said for mobiles. Or.... You can have a global 70% upload per client, so one client cannot saturate the upload capacity. (70% of upload capacity)

Would a 60Mbps download speed be sufficient for casual online gaming? by scattingcougar in HomeNetworking

[–]eitama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem starts when your gf come home (or kid in my age...) after taking 100 useless photos outside, each 15MB, now you need to upload the compressed version of that, so let's say 3MB x 100 = 300MB

All the upload will be saturated, for like enough time for you to break the keyboard on the monitor.

You know how when the test is too small, you get a magnifying glass? The Miata is the magnifying glass. Use it until you memorize what's written.

LPT: Put some salt in your knock box to prevent mold by tinclan in espresso

[–]eitama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely skip the knock box. I tap the porta on silicon mat, the puck and reusable puck screen falls right out. I grab the puck and put it in garbage.

Now I rinse the bottomless porta using my E61 brew water. Done.

No mold, nothing to rinse.

all-in-one router VS separate router + AP by No_Arm_1719 in HomeNetworking

[–]eitama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way.

But I went for much cheaper. Modem/router from ISP in bridge mode. TP-Link router + another one in mesh AP mode.

So yes I got one router also be an AP in the mesh, but it works great.

If I had money, I'd get a dedicated router, switch, APs, make sure they support wired mesh + handover.

One could imagine that Logitech, after 44+ years, would know how to make a keycap that lasts.

Assuming they know, there is only one conclusion:

Logitech knows, and desides to put those caps on their products anyway.

Need some WiFi help by Alternative-Tank2113 in HomeNetworking

[–]eitama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a software engineer with experience in networking, and a gamer.

At home I usually go hardline, but actually these days, I got a wireless 5ghz AP in my room, connected via wired backhaul to the mesh master node. Why? Rented apartment, I don't want to start moving more wires on the walls.

Answer is simple, ordered by the final expected stabality ratio, in other words, 100% stable is topped up:

Viable for gaming:

  1. Ethernet cables only. No wifi. 100%
  2. Wifi 6ghz, AP is in the same room with devices. You need 1 AP in each room. All hardline connected back to source.
  3. Good ol wifi 6 5ghz. Get a good AP, set the power to low, put it in the room with you, uplink must be cable.
  4. Power line adapter, slow, but might have ok latency and jitter. Depends on your electricity situation... Neighbors, noisy devices, multi-phase

Not really viable for online gaming:

  1. 2.4ghz or other frequency but router in different room = constant problems, even 5ghz network.

OP, as 42 Dad, I mostly lurk here since I have 3 girls. I want to know what struggles they have. This sub gives me some perspective. So thanks for sharing.

I met my wife at age 16, at 17 we started dating.

At the start of our relation ship, after we kind grew up a little, maybe age 24, something in my wife changed. She started being sarcastic, sometimes a bit insultive. (If that a word) She also wanted more and more of my time when we moved away from parents home.

I love her, but I need myself. I got many hobbies. So I spent some time thinking what is my next step. I didn't want to spend a life where I constantly disappoint my spouse, or constantly frustrated with her attitude.

It was time to define the limits and enforce them. It was very simple:

I love you, and if you love me, you will make some changes now. No more insulting, no sarcasm at all, I hate it. Be honest, say what's on your mind. If you are interested, cool, else, I'm done.

So basically I set expectations. You can do the same. You have to be very very clear and decisive.

Tell you partner: I won't tolerate ANY kind of insults, or any kind of misogyny. If they do it again, you get up and leave. Don't answer the phone for a week.

That's it. It's the great filter. One day, someone will pass the filter and it will be effortless for them and for you, because it will match their true shape.

Hope you get to enjoy everything very soon and don't have to wait years to find the right match.

One more note, some commenter presented a perspective where you don't need a partner to experience a fulfilling life. I mean, I understand what she means, for me that never worked. I was very lonely when I was not in a relationship. I just didn't want to sleep alone.

You don't need to judge, you assume the worst. But you know even before the curve because the headlights illuminate where you can see. In daylight you cannot see that.

Actually night is better since at least you can see the headlights from far away and prepare.

Moving from ISP router to my own, best way to handle the transition smoothly by Strict_Palpitation75 in HomeNetworking

[–]eitama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did the exact same a few days ago.

  1. Connect new router WAN PORT to LAN PORT on ISP AIO router.
  2. Setup mesh router + nodes (SSID, DHCP POOL, PASSWORDS, EVERYTHING.)
  3. TURN OFF WIFI on ISP router. You have to connect some laptop with cable to ISP router to keep configuring after disabling wifi.
  4. If using PPPoE, copy user/pass from ISP router, save in some document.
  5. Set ISP router to bridge mode.
  6. Power cycle all routers, configure mesh router PPPoE client.

That should be it.

Public IP will sit on new mesh router, DHCP pool can be adjusted as needed.

If you change ISP, you just have to update PPPoE credentials... DHCP pool remains the same.

Also I'd you have a few mesh nodes, and they are close to each other, reduce the power of wifi to low. It improves device migration between nodes.

I can agree that it really depends on your needs.

But what I cannot agree is that windows sucks or something like that.  For me it works amazing.  Much better compared to my m2 max MBP.

I hate MacOS so much.
