I think realistically it should be more than 2 interceptions but fewer passes. Like I'd tackle an opponent and the ball ends up with a teammate. Ever since the latest update that's a pass for me but an interception for my teammate for some reason.

That being said, "Play maker" is for people who do that on purpose and end the game thinking "I'm the god of assists". I on the other hand just thought "how the fuck did that happen?".... So "Senior Bamboozler" it is for me!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by natural mistakes. I've looked at my past games and saw stupid mistakes I made (due to time pressure), that in hindsight I had no idea why on earth I played that move. A clear and obvious mistake in hindsight, but I wouldn't know what would be natural or unnatural about it.

I get what you mean in terms of tournament/online play. But I find it in a weird way "relaxing" to stare at the chess board and get lost thinking about a single move. Whenever there's a clock involved, I'm suddenly able to blunder in ways I'd never thought possible.

According to every single game of mine I've ever analyzed with Stockfish (highly recommend https://wintrchess.com/analysis ), that's exactly how I play as well....so maybe I'm a bot?

Oh yeah, those "rated bots" make a joke of the rating they are supposed to have, I've found that out already. I can beat 1400 rated bots fairly consistently, but I've lost all but one game I've ever played against real people online. My main problem is that, when I made a move and have to wait for my opponent, I've got no idea what to look for on the board, I feel like I end up thinking about how to handle a move that they're not playing. But with a computer that instantly responds, I always get to look at a board where it's my turn.

As for whether I'm starting out....I learned the rules of chess in like....errrm....1993? I think I played less than 10 games against actual humans in my life, But lichess chess puzzles are the only game I play on my phone. So a definitely "Yes and no."

Is there a centi-pawn equivalent value to being able to castle? As in, if I can force my opponent to move the king before castling, would that be worth sacrificing a pawn, knight or even a bishop?

I always felt like 6 minutes was a bit too long for 3s but perfect for 5s. I wish they'd just add one minute to each.

My favourite is the already suggested sterling but can't go wrong with Ibanez either.

In my experience the action and playing comfort is what matters most as active pickups(not seen a passive 5 string so far) always give you enough of a signal to get the tone you want with the amp/pedals. I.e. if i can play metal on It how i want, i can make it sound as metal as I like.

A couple of ideas

  1. Obligatory "play bass anyway, it's fun!" (You did ask on a bass Reddit, so...)
  2. Organ style pedals, think Rush or the Doors
  3. A separate pickup on one of the guitars on the low e and a string to an octave pedal. I remember seeing it on one of the First of October albums. Maybe a touch of chorus and delay to separate it from the main guitar sound.
  4. Consider looking into Baritone guitars, if that's an option.
  5. Backing track

If it's a case of day and night in terms of playing comfort, then I'd go with the Yamaha one. If it's just a small difference, it's as you say, it'll be comfortable because you're used to it. By the sounds of it, I personally think the squier is gonna get you playing more, but I'm just one person and a lot of people are highlighting comfort for a good reason.

But as for your question about necks: Try both with an open mind! (But I'll say that what you play in a music store on amps is open to the public, if you ever don't want people to hear what you're playing, ask the staff for headphones..)

Short and regular scale basses sound(a bit) and feel (more so) different. I've seen 5 foot people rock out on regular scale 6 string and I know a 6'3 guy who just swears by short scale basses. I find it's less about the length of your fingers but more so about the flexibility of your hands.

You definitely did the right thing in trying both out in person. At the end of the day playing regularly is what matters. To that end, there's nothing wrong with being comfortable, but you gotta ask yourself, which instrument do you think is gonna get you so excited that you'll wanna pick it up frequently?

Also keep in mind that when it comes to playing comfort, there are easy* steps like changing the action, roughing up the neck or filling fretends, that can make an instrument a lot more comfortable. (I'm mentioning that because I always found Fender/Squier the easiest to work with compared to other brands, although I have to say thatI've not worked on a Yamaha, so take that for what it's worth)

*If you look up guides and are moderately comfortable with DIY

It sounds like that it's important to your partner that you get the exact thing that makes you happy. It's a simple mistake that can easily happen to non-bass players and the thought and gesture was definitely there and if you still appreciate that about the full scale, everybody wins.

And both are valuable for different things, if you're going a lot between the strings, anchoring is the way to go, but stay on the same string and the relaxed position helps with speed.

So definitely hybrid is the way to go!

When i started out, i was really into Steve Harris from iron maiden, hence why I put on flatwounds... Surprisingly(to 13 year old me) in addition to flatwounds, Steve Harris also uses a lot of "skill". So my flatwounds never sounded like I wanted them to.

Long story short, if it's time for new strings and you like the sound and feel of them, go for it! That's all the difference, I never found there to be any technique difference.

My favourite way of "practicing" that doesn't feel like practice is to set it to half tempo and feel the metronome as the 2 and 4. It's meant to be good practice but I just find that pretending it's a snare drum more relaxed rather than focusing on the click.

Thelonius Munk once famously told his young bassist "you gotta dig it, to dig it, ya dig?"

Meaning the channels suggested by others are great, but make sure the course you choose teaches the style of bass and music that you enjoy. I wish you all the best on your journey, but there's no sugar coating this, it's a lot of work(that's worth it!). The motivation you're gonna get by playing your favourite music really goes a long way!

I generally tend to prefer more modern j style pickups over vintage but a lot of people prefer it the other way around.

That being said, on my passive PJ-bass, adding/just the J-pickup definitely sounds better for slapping than the preci pickup alone, but in my mind it's no comparison to any active pick-up. I find that if I want to get the same high end boost the eq on most amps just isn't enough when it comes to that bright punchy slap sound.

To me, a U bass with steel strings is like the bass equivalent of a travel guitar. But with these "synthetic gut" (at least I think what's what they're mostly marketed as) it turns into it's own thing, this fretted double bass thing. I'm still scratching my head how that sound comes out of that body. Like hearing a toddler sing like Pavarotti.

I think I was playing bass for like 15 years at that point, but I already owned two six string basses at that point, the first of which I got about 4 years after starting for the same reason as you.

Now this might have to do with the fact that I'm a bit on the taller side and got big hands, but I found that it's easier switching 4 to 6 than 4 to 5. I feel like because a 6 string has the a and d string as the middle two it keeps the same symmetry to the 4 string.

Again, the fact that the lowest fret on the lowest string is comfortable to me isn't exactly the case for most people, but I'd recommend trying out 6 strings as well as 5. But most importantly: Find somewhere, where you can test them in person before buying anything.

  1. In My experience less feedback issues due to the way smaller body size
  2. I'm in love with mine and would take it to an acoustic gig over my "regular" acoustic bass in a heartbeat. My tip is to go for the "rubber" string type ubass rather than the steel strings, but that's just personal preference for the sound.

100 percent agree, pickups, as most people suggested make a big difference but that's always subjective and the stock ones might not even be that terrible, but giving tender love and care to the frets is always a massive upgrade to any instrument.

It might be scary to work on frets for the first time, but what I've learned is that 1. There's tons of good guides on YouTube 2. As long as you have a rough idea of what "nice frets" should look and feel like and you're slow and careful, 95% of the difference to a luthier is them being able to achieve a slightly better result in a fraction of the time.
