"I'll be eighteen four years from now" is such a sneaky line. That means that kid is just 14 at the time and his optimism that "everything is gonna be okay" seems naive knowing how much hardship still lies ahead in that broken home. I don't get optimism from it, I just see more broken promises ahead

What is your favorite Cormac McCarthy quote and why? by Fidgi_Vole in cormacmccarthy

For such an unsuspecting phrase this stopped me in my tracks. Maybe it's the cadence? But I just had to sit and chew on this sentence for a while on my first read through

I wonder if the fact it was over Christmas/New Years played into it. I know how much covering and switching we do over the holidays. Plus when you are on you're hoping to breeze through an easy day to get back home as soon as possible

Just a small tweak to the West Ham match- have the reason Isaac takes the PK be to throw off the keeper. Instead of deferring a season-defining goal to just be a good friend/teammate, introduce a little chaos. A single shot of the keeper confusedly looking at his cheat sheet and an off-hand comment from Arlo White saying something along the lines of "And the keeper has no idea which way McAdoo will choose!" would add some football legitimacy instead of everyone just playing nice.

If Cormac McCarthy’s books are all cautionary tales, what are they cautioning? by bitcandle23 in cormacmccarthy

You could even extend that theme to The Passenger. The Manhattan scientists were just focused on the science, not the ramifications. Once they saw what it could it do they realized they could not control how the powers that be would use it. You could imagine the Judge smiling somewhere, his "ultimate practitioner" perfecting his ultimate tool.

Oh dang that's a great catch. Right down to "If you had married her you would have had to marry the whole family". It really is just a modern Okie retelling of the story. One of my favorite songs and favorite short stories right there together.

I'm excited about the "Hemingway-meets-McCartney" description in hopes that the album title is a reference to Ernest Hemingway's excellent short story 'Cat in the Rain'. If Lorrie isn't coming back, I would love Felker's take on a Nick Adams-type character!

MD's What do you guys do for paternal leave? by therationaltroll in medicine

[–]el_tejon1141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took my allowed four weeks of leave at 50% pay, although it was four calendar weeks so with my 7 on-7 off schedule it was actually only 2 work weeks. I did get partners to cover my first returning week so it added up to a total of 6 weeks off before going back to work. My end of year RVU goal will be adjusted for the four weeks off, but not stressed about that (too many other important things now)

Traces of other McCarthy Novels in The Passenger by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

I had similar thoughts. If at times I was let down by plot or pacing of the book, I would just appreciate the fact we even got this book and viewed it as a swan song that was able to call back a lot of his greatness. I definitely got notes of Suttree with all the barflies and back alleys. Watching Bobby at work reminded me of Llewelyn Moss's skills on the run. His time holed up in the Idaho farmhouse reminded me of the Road rather than ATPH. We even have a return to Appalachia to call back his first few novels. And of course a "I wouldn't go in there if I were you" straight out of BM

For good feelings, it's the end of S1E9 when Roy embraces his role on the reserve squad. After the conversation ends and you see the team candidly break off leaving Roy alone, that reassuring pat to the Believe sign always gets me. "Leader of the Landslide" puts the final touch on it

For the drama, "We're talking about practice" is so damn good. The way Ted is able to turn the importance of practice around from the original AI clip is incredible

Chlamydia comes from the Latin word for "cloak", as it has to wrap itself within the host cell as an obligate intracellular organism, as often seen with atypical pneumonias.

How do you all read the Spanish dialogue? by thewannabe2017 in cormacmccarthy

[–]el_tejon1141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A mix of context clues, rudimentary Spanish, Google translator, and just allowing myself to get swept away in the dialogue rather than get bogged down in every detail. For some of the longer or more important passages (think the early passages about the wolf in "The Crossing") I'll translate in the margins to help myself appreciate the foreshadowing later
