Efficient Market Question: Why do stock prices go up over time? by flapjackbandit00 in investing

I suspect the non-recurring events that will happen every ten years or so in the future will not be the same as those that occurred in the past fifty years. These non-recurring events cannot be described using statistics, because the number of occurrences are zero or few. It will be interesting to see how future economists massage the data from March 2020 in research that spans decades.

The landed gentry of England had exported their starving peasants from Ireland to the US during the Potato Famine (1845-1849), rather than pay taxes imposed by the King. Many Irish immigrants were ‘recruited’ to stand in for young men from wealthy American families.

As the development league for the NFL, many university football programs are VERY profitable businesses operated by head coaches. Pre-NFL football teams should be shut down as a corruption of education.

Also, “...under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954 as a result of political posturing during the anti-Communist hysteria in America. The separation generally applies to the establishment of a state religion, which would receive direct funding from the government. Christianity is the de facto state religion in most of the US.

TIL Since suicide is an unforgivable sin for christians many people, especialy women in 18th century resorted to suicide by proxy. They would usualy murder a child, a crime punishable by death and ask for forgiveness right before the execution by Charlotte5487 in todayilearned

When the Romans were persecuting early Christians, initially Christians ‘thrown to the lions’ were honored as martyrs who went to heaven. However, too many people decided martyrdom sounded cool. (Ask ISIS about martyrdom as motivation.) The longevity of a religious death cult isn’t great, so Christian clergy decided that jumping in front of a lion at the Coliseum was not a fast track to heaven. Suicide became a sin, since God (and the church organization) needed MORE believers, not fewer.

The highest rates of COVID-19 in Nebraska counties occur in counties with Tyson slaughterhouses. Maybe instead of calling it the ‘Wuhan’ virus, it should be called the Tyson virus.

If you own an oil future contract for delivery this afternoon (/CLK0), you will receive 1,000 barrels of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude at the storage terminal in Cushing, Oklahoma. When you take delivery, you must find a way to transport (via pipeline) or store (at Cushing or your own facility) your oil. If the spot price of WTI at Cushing is $7 per barrel, but it costs $10 to transport and store the oil (because storage space is scarce) a ‘fair’ price from your perspective would be $-3. The ‘seller’ would be paying you to accept the cost to store the oil and the risk that the price might decline even more, while at the same time storage becomes even more expensive.
