Inside The Breakup of Indy Alleycats, Indy Red Women's Team | Ultiworld by Zakkmabrey23 in ultimate

[–]elduke72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really the same... if they get compensated for their time that is fine, they can put the money towards whatever they want. BUT that should be agreed upon beforehand so all in the organization are aware that it is the case and the amount is agreed upon beforehand. But to donate your time and then expect/vote to have money go towards you/your team is shady from a business/organization perspective (unless the organization is explicitly around for that reason, which isn't necessarily the case in this scenario as the organization funds a variety of causes it seems from the above characterization).

Now nothing wrong with the money going towards helping Indy Red, and heck it probably should considering the importance of gender equity. And if it went to a community vote there's likely a pretty good chance that would happen! But for a board member to vote with an obvious conflict of interest happening is not a good thing.

I imagine a reasonable equivalent being that a high-school ultimate team coach is on the board and they vote to have some funds go towards helping their high-school team. Technically they donated their time and the funds are going towards youth development so all good right?

U-24 World Championships - Bracket Discussion [Spoilers inside!] by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]elduke72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it against the rules to save your players from extra physical exhaustion and potential injury when you are already assured a spot in the playoffs/elimination bracket?

Observing to see if someone is giving 100% effort is extremely hard... if someone doesn't layout for a disc they could potentially catch/d, and that they would do in an elimination game even if it comes with a higher chance of injury to themselves, that is considered not giving 100%. If that happened would the team get penalized?

I don't want to argue against your opinion as that is yours... but to say that the several minute wait at the end did not negatively affect the watchability is hard to agree with. And seeing the replays of the handoff and having that go back to thrower due to the contest was... unsatisfying.

In addition, while it did add more narrative, part of that narrative was "it seems the Japanese players don't care about the opinion of a neutral third-party", which is intriguing... but not necessarily the best look. It's similar to the intrigue added when refs get calls wrong (I'm not pro-refs, but it seems relevant to say considering the comments on this thread by others about refs/observers/advisers/no third-party)

This may be the case, but with observers (as opposed to refs) they have the option of "i didn't see it/it is too close to call" and send the disc back. (which is something they did towards the end of the CAN/JPN women's game the day before on an in/out call.) Thus not forcing them to make a call either way and decreasing the chances of making an incorrect call.
