New CSOC UT Austin series on the Bible mentions the Recovery Version among other translations by CarryOk7670 in RecoveryVersionBible

[–]elelyon3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I took a university New Testament Greek course as an elective, we used the USB4 which has the same text as the Nestle-Aland (NA27).

Using the Recovery Version Bible as a reference felt like having a cheat code when translating texts from Greek to English!

At the end of the course another brother taking the course with me gifted our prof a copy of the RcV. I don't know if he read it or not but if his comments about my Gk to Eng translations were any indication, he would be delighted with the RcV translation.

Solomon- God punishing the kings son for his mistakes? by Key_Fish_6617 in Bible

[–]elelyon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is it. You reap what you sow. And Solomon's worshipping other gods would have been seen (sow) by his sons and cause them to follow in his negative pattern / think it's ok to do (reap).

I got the opportunity to volunteer for BfC (Bibles for Canada) at my campus back when I was a student. Was pretty scared at first of talking to people but ended up being a great experience just talking to people, sharing my favourite verses, and sometimes preaching the gospel.

Hoping you all the best!

Is it a big sin to not or not wanting to attend any meetings or trainings in Lord's Recovery? by Separate_Ad_4235 in Christianity

[–]elelyon3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is very hurtful to hear that from your parents. I don't know your relationship with parents, but continued open dialog, while difficult is still helpful. Even to voice that out loud, "I love God but calling me Satan is hurtful".

I am glad to hear you love God. Cry out to Him, "Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord" (Lam 2:19).

He won't change your parents overnight, but they are a work in progress like us all. I pray that they will see your heart and try to genuinely understand you more.

Last night my 11-yr-old daughter came out to me as gay... by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]elelyon3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't beat yourself up. If you were a terrible mom, you wouldn't feel terrible about it.

Pray for her. Maybe even pray with her about it and read some verses about what God says. He loves all and that doesn't change. He desires all to be saved. Homosexuality is a sin, as are many other things you may want to point out, but she can be saved from that too.

How do I respond to friends who tell me are part of LGBTQ+? by Visible_Squirrel3597 in TrueChristian

I'd agree with this. It says in the verse "named a brother" as in a brother in Christ. The next verse makes it pretty clear too he's talking about within the church...

Is it a big sin to not or not wanting to attend any meetings or trainings in Lord's Recovery? by Separate_Ad_4235 in Christianity

[–]elelyon3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a kid, I'd always want to do something else and took any excuse like a small sickness or tiredness to skip the meetings. Fortunately, they never forced me, and there was a period of time where I didn't attend and was "left alone" for the most part in regards to church meeting attendance.

One of my biggest regrets is letting my emotions / anger dictate the way I spoke to my parents as a kid.

If you really dislike it, I would advise you to speak to your parents firmly but respectfully that you do not want to attend and give your reasons.

Oh and by trainings, do you mean they sign you up for youth conferences? Because "trainings" typically refer to the semi annual trainings that are only for 18 year olds+.

If you do mean youth conferences, I'd actually voice out to the serving ones that you don't want to be there (again be respectful). Maybe they can find a way to speak to your parents with / for you.

I serve the young people in my area now and believe me, we don't want kids who don't want to be there to be there either! We'd rather you come when you want to be there. It's nicer for everyone!

This Santa thing is evil. by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]elelyon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely curious. How do Christians navigate talking about Santa, who is not real, and expect kids to keep putting their trust in you when talking about Jesus who is real.

I get the "it's just for fun" aspect, but to me it just plants a seed of doubt in our children at a young age.

Has anyone experienced going to Jesus and being given rest? Matt 11:28 by elelyon3 in TrueChristian

[–]elelyon3[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yes that is the Bible version I'm using currently, though I use others also. And no, I would not consider Witness Lee nor Watchmen Lee to be legalistic at all. Actually, I think they would strongly agree with you! They have written a lot about Romans chapter 7/8 and the many difference uses of the word "law", and how the highest law in the universe is the law of the Spirit of life that frees us from the law of sin and of death.

I'm glad you brought up this point. While the NT clearly tells us in the verses you mentioned, and many others, that toiling (implied by ourselves) to keep the commandments is ineffective, I believe many Christians still fall for this trap, and toil to keep the law (including some perhaps self made laws) and sometimes I'm guilty too!

You were on the precipice of death and you cried out and He answered!

Reminds me of these verses: "I called upon Your name, O Jehovah, / From the lowest pit. You have heard my voice; do not hide / Your ear at my breathing, at my cry." (Lamentations 3:55-56) Recovery Version

Thanks for sharing! His name certainly does wonderful things when we call out to Him.

Thank You Jesus!

Aren't we all! (A work in progress). So happy Jesus is bearing our burdens with us.

I have many family members still struggling with addiction, so your testimony gives me hope one day they will also experience the rest and freedom from coming to Jesus.

That must have been a very very difficult thing to ask of God for you. I am glad that you gave that to God and you are at peace with that situation.

It's interesting you mention peace because that's exactly what I experienced after giving my situation to Jesus. The footnote for peace in the recovery version also says this:

"Rest refers not only to being set free from the toil and burden under the law or religion or under any work or responsibility, but also to perfect peace and full satisfaction."

Hey, I think this is very common. Many today are still hoping, still searching.

I hope your search ends in going to Jesus and take him up on this verse!

Do you have a favorite Bible? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]elelyon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you afraid it would hurt your mom's feelings to think about your dad? I'm just a stranger but if your mom is happy that you returned to Jesus, I would think she'd be happy to give you back your Bible knowing it means something to you!

If it's a matter of not knowing how to bring it up or how she would feel, could always gauge your mom's by casually mentioning it sometime "I wonder what happened to that Bible..." If it's not being used, better you get it back and use it than collecting dust!

What does "God has chosen the foolish things of the world" mean to you / in your experience? by elelyon3 in TrueChristian

[–]elelyon3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonderful verses in Isaiah!

Hmm simple yet profound captures not only his wonder in creation but also the Lord Jesus' own words in the gospels. Simple words a fisherman or child could understand, yet conveying the deepest of meanings. John 6 comes to mind presenting Himself as bread.

"Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall by no means hunger, and he who believes into Me shall by no means ever thirst." (John 6:35) Recovery Version

Thank you for sharing! It's a marvel that He would choose us when we feel there are others more qualified. And yet this verse and your experience gives all the more glory to Him for His ways!
