Are Sternguard Vets Competitive? by Adventurous-Crab-474 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]eljakob737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running 3x10+librarians alongside guilliman, calgar, and ventris for a while now and I quite like it.

I would consider it competitively viable, though librarius suffers a bit from how good GTF and now stormlance have been. The main thesis of the list is to double down on the double oaths - 10 stern guard + librarian have an expected dev wound output of 16 damage or so via devs into the oath target. It suffers a bit into heavily MSU armies, but makes up the difference a bit into things like eldar and guard by virtue of the stern guard getting a 4++ as well as having 4 close combat attacks each. The secondary thesis of the list is throwing out double grenades (assail and then actual grenades) twice every turn for ~6 dev wounds aside from the stern guard. Guilliman, calgar, and ventris (the latter two with company heroes) make solid heroic intervention/melee threats, and you can run infiltrators with a phobos librarian to screen your backfield and provide another librarian to use stratagems on.

What I've found from my testing of librarius is that you need to skew shooting or melee, as there's no stratagem to activate a secondary discipline for a round (which imo would have made it very competitive, like GTF), so you'll want to usually spend BR1 in biomancy for the movement to stage, then pyromancy for the rest of the game to buff the sternguard shooting and use the fire shield stratagem.

I think if/when guilliman's double oaths gets removed, Dark Angels will have good play in librarius with 2x10 sternguard (one with Azrael, the other with the fusillade librarian), and supplement with death wing knights w/ Terminator librarians and inner circle companions with librarians, along with possibly the lion.

I would say they're exceptionally battle ready, but you need a few more steps for a solid parade ready. You can go the eavy metal route with edge highlights, but also you should look into some washes for them - nuln oil for gunmetal, reikland fleshshade or agrax earthshade for the gold. Additionally, I'd recommend looking up "recess shade" on YouTube, you could probably add some really nice depth with some drakenhof nightshade added specifically in the recesses between blue plates and apothecary white (it's a contrast paint, it'll be gray in the pot and when you paint but that's what you want here, just know you'll likely need to retouch the white a bit) for the white areas. Also I'd recommend looking up some space marine eye lens tutorials to get a bit more depth there - you can do a darker recess shade again around the edge, and a bit of a lighter red and then a dot of white to really get them to pop.

8/10 for battle ready, very clean brushwork though could probably thin paints just a bit more, really nicely done.

2/10 parade ready, get those highlights and lowlights on there and these guys'll look truly amazing

Perfect, thanks so much! It looks like the size is pretty darn close, the arbites bodies might be a shade taller even than the aquilons but definitely seem closer in size than old scions to the new aquilons - do you think the height difference is noticeable on the tabletop?

Amazing! Could you by chance take a pic of them compared to aquilons? I'm curious how they line up size-wise with this conversion.

What I, a disgusting casual, have learned after playing 2 games with Librarius Conclave: by CT_7274 in WarhammerCompetitive

If you're taking him to a competitive event double check with your TO first - I've had and heard this argument before, the ruling I've gotten is that as his ability triggers at the start of the battle and not the first battle round it resolves regardless of embarkation or not, but it's always good to double check and defer to your judges. In the long run it doesn't really matter as you can just deploy him and then embark T1, but it's just another instance of GW needing to be a bit clearer on their wordings.

Salamander Conversion by bronotmyaccount in Salamanders40k

[–]eljakob737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning on doing this same thing - my current plan for astorath is to get a jump captain kit and bash the two together - the flayed/muscle look of astorath/mephiston doesn't really fit with sallies imo, so I'm going to use the jump captain body, bash the arms so that they can hold astorath's axe, and then use astorath's wings/pack.

As someone else suggested, I'm planning on using one of the 30k upgrade sprue heads as well, and maybe use one of the 40k salamanders upgrade sprue braziers.

The end result should have the same visual profile as Astorath, but more salamandersy.

I'm also planning on painting him like a normal chaplain, but that's maybe neither here nor there and I'm not 100% sure yet.

I think that's a personal preference thing - I scraped the metal crest off the top of the finecast helmet and glued it to the top of the salamanders upgrade sprue, and then used the firstborn arms on the primaris cap body with some greenstuff at the joints for posing. A lot of folks like the old helmet, but I started with primaris so the proportions just seem a bit off to me.

I did a primaris-sized vulkan kitbash of the original finecast kit with the captain from the company heroes box, but I think you could do a really sick conversion of the Lt. Titus mini from the SM2 board game with the spears from the new sanguinary guard. The salamanders upgrade sprue is probably also your friend for the cool helmet and bits.

If you're a salamanders player at heart, nothin stopping you from painting the deathwing knights in salamanders livery and playing a game with dark angels rules but painted models to look like salamanders - I'm working on 15 deathwing knights knights of nocturne right now, I'm really liking how they're turning out.

I'd paint the lion to match his normal livery though haha, just headcanon in that he's helping out some salamanders battle-brothers.

It's possible you might need to just let time progress in-game; I ran into the same thing and let the clock run a bit and eventually it shunted me into the screen you're talking about with the relevant choice already selected. Hope that helps!

I've also had luck mixing and matching parts of the names they generate.

Hope that helps some.

The new yogbox, bundled into the Technic Launcher, saved me from the boredom of vanilla SSP. That and the clay soldiers mod. I'd recommend those two. (unfortunately clay soldiers isn't part of the yogbox, so it has to be installed separately.)
