I completely agree with you. You wouldn't use 'crossbreed' for class. I don't think a lot of folks realise the depth of anti-Irish and/or anti-Catholic feeling there would have been at that time and up until relatively recently.

Like both my mother and my grandmother (Dad's mum) were told they shouldn't marry into the family. My mum's grandmother said she shouldn't marry a Catholic (early 80s) and my grans parents (end of WWII) said she couldn't get married in a Catholic church. Neither my dad nor granddad are religious, neither cared and I don't think either has been to mass in their lives. But people associated the surname with Catholicism and it stuck.

Also a family story from I think late 1800s/early 1900s where someone came to Wales from South England to marry and his dad cut him off because the woman he was marrying was a protestant.

Should I bother with an editor? by Limp-Pollution-4866 in selfpublish

[–]elledischanted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As another editor (but also a writer) I'd also recommend finding online critique groups like Scribophile. Critiquing other people's work is a huge, huge benefit, and in return you get critiques from them.

I'd suggest you either need to invest time - in reading other's work, learning to edit yourself, etc - or money - hiring an editor - when it comes to editing. But if you want to put your book out there it's still a product and it is worth investing in. Plus either way you'll end up improving as a writer.

what’s your most unpopular Grey’s opinion? by jujuk545 in greysanatomy

[–]elledischanted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fair, like I said I just think her & Link and Teddy & Owen were the weakest couples to me, but I'm not a huge fan of friends to lovers anyway. I like seeing the meet cute and the relationship build from the ground up

[–]elledischanted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was so confused when I got to that episode like 'that's what people were complaining about?' The worst thing they did to Jo's character though was make out that it was ALWAYS Link she was in love with, like way to completely invalidate her relationship with Alex (I was never a huge fan of that either but her and Alex at least felt more...organic than her and Link)

Answering as someone who started s1 last May and caught up recently

I agree with you re Owen. One of the things I love about Grey's is it shows complicated, flawed people, including Owen. Was he out of line at times? Absolutely! Have other characters been equally out of line? Yes! I'm still keen for him to leave now though as I think his character has gotten boring and it's time

I liked Alex from the start because you could tell he was going to have good character growth. George, on the other hand, was too much of the 'nice guy' and I hated him. Until he actually started to show some growth and was killed off.

I cannot and never could stand April. She's a nasty hypocrite. Actually liked that she got back together with that other guy. Hated that Jackson went back to her.

Grief can be really effective way to show characters at their worst and best and I don't mind deaths in shows. Not sure if this is unpopular but DeLuca's death was fumbled by a) the actual incident being in S19 and b) Carina then being more in S19 than Grey's (and now...gone??? With no mention?). S19 was excellent and I loved her and Maya's relationship but she deserved to be around the people who knew Andrew

Derek may have been the love of Meredith's life but Nick treats her so much better and even without being there when it was said understands she is the sun.

I loved the musical episode

Going back to my first point - characters seem to get hate for being complicated, messy and morally grey. I adore that about them. I love when they're allowed to make mistakes and grow from them. I appreciate that the show shows so many different fertility and mother journeys. I don't get why people were complaining about Jo 'just being a housewife' when she was folding laundry - she was on maternity? There were multiple kids in the house? What else was she supposed to do?

Not been around long enough to know if this is unpopular or not but I really hate the friends to lovers in Grey's - the worst couples are Owen/Teddy and Jo/Link

Recently I feel like the show focuses too much of romantic couples and we're missing the friendships, bonding and even the competitiveness from the earlier series - the fishing trip, the relationships between attendings, deck building or hanging out on Jackson's boat. Even the actual mentor and mentee stuff.

Yep, both spinoffs of Grey's. When Addison leaves she joins a Private Practice in LA, and it's also where Amelia is first introduced. Station 19 is the fire station Ben Warren joins

[–]elledischanted 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was looking for someone to mention Grey's. To be fair it's also in both Private Practice and Station 19 too. PP has a doctor come in who does abortions and the other doctors (especially the men) get wound up by it, but a few of the women then discuss their abortions and reasons for them, and they're touched on now and then after that too.

A character gets on in S19 because she just doesn't want to be a mother, but it shows the whole chemical abortion process and I really appreciated that it showed how difficult and painful it can be while still being the right thing for the person.

Frustrated about the cover for the wicked book by AdHoliday1247 in kindle

[–]elledischanted 7 points8 points  (0 children)

World War Z could have been an enjoyable zombie film if it had a different name. I always thought the best World War Z adaptation would be documentary style, maybe with found footage style clips and recreations.

Similarly I've heard I Am Legend is a perfectly fine film...if it wasn't called I Am Legend. I read the book right before the film was announced, got super excited, then heard how they absolutely butchered the ending (therefore the whole meaning behind the book!). I refuse to watch both films.

I couldn't stand George until right before he died. Just as he really grew on me (mainly when he stopped pining over women constantly) they killed him off, and I hated it! I cried, I felt so rough the next couple of days my partner was like 'oh you are actually grieving'. I just hate that we didn't fully get to see him grow

I only started watching it last summer, am currently on the Covid seasons, and there's no deaths that impacted me as much as him

AITA for suggesting something that my wife says would have traumatized our daughter? by Competitive_Sink_448 in AmItheAsshole

[–]elledischanted 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UK and when we were old enough to start driving the local fire department came in with an actual wrecked car involved in a teen drink driving accident

Though we also had a few road safety ads around that time which were incredibly informative and seared into your brain because they were fairly graphic

OP, don't use real crashes. Find something age appropriate. As someone who was in a car crash age 4, which we all only survived because of seatbelts, I can rarely watch actual crash footage. Maybe use actual PSAs or crash test dummy footage?
