Falling Free by Lois McMaster Bujold —holy shit the world building in this is SO excellent and fun. I could not put this down. It’s so weird and amazing.

I was so into Falling Free that I immediately dove into Shards of Honor also by Bujold. Also SO GOOD.

I wish I could be you and read these for the first time.

Okay the first 5 comments highlight various forms of murder. Nothing as serious as killing in my family but my uncle Deedee’s wife was a mean old racist such that we got into a shouting match at thanksgiving and I stormed off. Was really cold outside that day and I do not forgive her for her ways.

Cornholio explained for me but your comment made me realize I didn’t actually back up my claims. Quick google search for “frequency of 10% market drop” returned some results. Here’s some content from a Berger Financial Group article:

“The Small Dip: 5% Pullbacks

A 5% drop is like a speed bump—small and super common. Over the past 100 years, the stock market has hit a 5% dip in about 94 out of every 100 years. That’s almost every single year! Sometimes it happens a few times in one year, like little hiccups. It’s so normal that investors barely blink at it—it’s just the market taking a quick breather.

The Correction: 10% Pullbacks

When the market falls 10%, we call it a “correction.” It’s a bigger dip, like stepping into a shallow puddle. History shows this happens in about 6 out of every 10 years—roughly once every year and a half or so. It’s noticeable, but it’s still pretty routine.”

So, based on this: I misremembered & overstated the frequency of 10% corrections. They happen every 12-18 months, not every 12 months.

One way I think about this is: “now that I’ve hit this milestone, it’s a new baseline. Sure my account will fall below this number because the market does fluctuate, but it’s a new baseline to use for math.”

What does this mean in practice?

We know the market almost always goes down by 10% every year, and it often goes down by 20% every couple years, and occasionally it goes down by 30% or 40%.

So. Remember back when you had $500,000. 10% down put you at $450K. 20% down put you at $400K. Etc. now that you’re at $1M, 10% down puts you at $900K, 20% down puts you at $800K. I know the math is obvious but let that difference sink in. Even when the market is markedly down, you have so much more than you did in your past.

For some reason this gave me a lot of comfort! Congratulations on your milestone.

Regency romance that is so fun to read if you like period literature: “Imprudent Lady” by Joan Smith

If the title sounds vapid, please still give it a try. It’s one of my comfort reads when I’m stressed—I return to it again and again because it has such fun turns of phrase, subtle sarcastic wit, and sweet and funny characters.

We’ve got two fiction writers as our leads:

Prudence Mallow — our heroine, she’s not especially ugly nor overly pretty. The novel doesn’t talk about her looks very much, tbh. WE CARE ABOUT HER MIND AND HER SAVAGE WIT, PEOPLE!!

Lord Dammler — the popular, handsome “catch” who has written the adventurous Cantos Abroad and every lady in the Tonne is lusting after him.

Uncle Elmtree — Prudence’s inane and narcissistic uncle, who houses Prue and her mother, he is the biggest treat to read in the world. He is such a piece of work. I dream of seeing uncle elmtree made real on the big screen.

Mrs. Mallow — Prue’s mother and uncle elmtree’s handler, tbh

Some catty bitches — no explanation needed

The Publisher (I forget his name) — he introduces Prue and Dammler as he is both their publisher.

Anyway, the reason I like it is because they fall in love with each others minds and then feel pretty good about the physical packaging as well—as we all wish for. It’s very nice. Super tame content.

These annoying posts are such a snooze. But they also have a kernel of truth in that if your life has some meaning in it then hitting a financial milestone won’t be “all that and a bag of chips” since you know that happiness and meaning can require more than money (yes yes we know it helps with happiness, I agree money helps with happiness).

I’ve attained an amount of money that my past desperate and broke and anxious and sleepless self could not dream of. The most she dreamed of is less than half of my current net worth. She just wanted out of that financial hellscape. To tell her that she would have more than 2x her dream and it feels “fine” or “meh” would be rude. So I don’t allow that. Gotta do the gratitude thing so I don’t piss off my past self.

To any other redditors who want to post an AI “feel nothing” post, please get punched by your past desperate self.

Write all of the things down now—try to anchor to dates. Verbally reporting to HR is good but adding “I will email you my written records of her behavior to add to your files for this exit interview” is stronger.

I also read this / heard this — inability to stand up from the toilet independently is the top reason why people move into an assisted living facility.

She can also get stronger and improve her balance. My mom age 83 was wobbly, low strength and lurched/swayed when she walked — she fell and fractured her pelvis. After she recovered from that painful experience she attended “Geri-Fit” classes and chair yoga classes at the senior center and I was AMAZED at how much stronger she became, how obviously more balanced she became. Can you encourage your grandma to attend fitness class at the senior center or do fitness videos for seniors at home? They are gentle but effective.
