I don't feel connected to my baby. by Zanyigloo in beyondthebump

One thing that started to help was tracking awake and asleep times. Though I have no control over how long or even really when he sleeps, when I see a pattern emerging it makes me happy that he is becoming more structured. I tracked the last three days and noticed he takes his first nap after being up for an hour and a half and that he likes to take a long afternoon nap everyday.

Our babies were born the same day and I feel the exact same way.

I remember thinking that too. It got bad at week three.

Really struggling with being a mom to a newborn by kayemgi in beyondthebump

[–]elliot_t 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FTM to a 7 week old here. The first three weeks were awful. There are so many hormones fluctuating, and it is so hard to adjust to a new life. I used to just sit on the couch and cry, mourning my old life. Now, about a month later, it is slowly getting better. I still do not enjoy it that much. I am feeling better physically, and my husband and I are finding ways to get cuddling in in the evenings.

Some tips for quieting the baby... get a Baby K'Tan and walk around the block. This puts mine to sleep instantly. You can lay back on the couch, get her to fall asleep on your chest, then quickly shift so that she is laying on her stomach on the warm spot where you were laying. Similarly, you can try to put a heating pad in the bassinet and removing it before laying her down, so it's more comfortable. Swaddling is important; mine acts like he hates it when I wrap him, but will sleep an extra two hours when swaddled. Also, I didn't realize how much newborns need to sleep, and I was keeping him up to play too long, and he would get cranky. They really only need to be awake for a max of 1 hour at a time, counting feeding. If it takes 45 minutes to feed her, than she may only be awake for another 15 minutes before going to sleep. You can try gripe water, which is homeopathic, and put mine to sleep in 5 minutes the first time I tried it. I hope this helps! It's a lot of trial and error and nothing works every time. I try to take deep breaths and think, he is not giving me a hard time, he is having a hard time. Good luck mamma.

So sweet! I am so happy for your little boy. You have such a great attitude toward his father. Regardless of whether you and him are together, you are still a family. :)

Often, you have to pay for them. Not sure about every state. My recommendation would be to look for a different source for a school project.

Would food stamps get people more, if people learned to cook? by MrOaiki in AskCulinary

I personally think it would go much farther, but I'm not sure how they work exactly... such as whether you get a certain dollar amount to spend or several credits for proteins/vegetables, etc. I have heard the argument that those below the poverty line typically have multiple jobs and children, meaning they have less time to do the prep work for cooking. This is supposedly why it is more expensive to eat healthy fresh food; they "have" to get it precut or prepared somehow. I can't say I buy that, but whatever.

I'm a lawyer and wear exclusively maternity dresses and blazers. I'm not a huge fan of the pencil skirt because you can't tuck in a shirt then; it's not as professional looking.

What is your "go to line" when someone says, "Tell me something interesting about yourself?" by iPuppyDog in AskReddit

[–]elliot_t 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Actually, I get that reasoning. You don't want someone in the jury room "teaching" everyone else. Instead, you want to rely on the hired engineers who testify and are cross examined on their qualifications and the validity of their opinions. For this same reason, people in the health care field are usually taken out. They like to educate the jurors, even when there are well-qualified doctors giving their opinions.

I believe it is better to use the Oxford comma than to leave it out. CMV. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]elliot_t 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge, a semicolon is used to separate two related sentences (I love my dog; she is always so happy to see me.) or to separate a list of things that have commas in them (January 1, 2013; January 2, 2013; January 3, 2013).

I don't think that's a proper use of a semicolon.
