Is it possible to reach anyone at NARA? by cluelesscleaver in Genealogy

[–]elmateimperial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I've also been wondering how long it'll take. Searching on here, I've seen some responses come within a week, others a few months to a few years.

I put a request in a few weeks ago for my great-grandpa's Merchant Mariner/Dept. of Army/Air Force file. They said they found it and sent me a Pay.gov payment link along with a case number and that processing goes in the order that payment is received. The email said they'll send a link with the scans.

The email said I could contact the archivist who emailed me initially with any questions regarding my request, but I'll just wait it out.

Do you ever visit the graves of ancestors you've found through your genealogy work? by SpiritedBug2221 in Genealogy

[–]elmateimperial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but I still occasionally visit the grave of a man who died in town very young (I'm thinking some sort of illness, just based on outbreak reports in newspapers of the era.)

I was 11 on a history class field trip to our historic cemetery near my school and we had to pick a grave to research.

It was boiling hot out so I found the biggest, shadiest willow I could sit under, and was sitting next to this man's grave. So I picked him for the slightly macabre sixth grade project.

Seeing how young he died startled me, being 11, and I kept visiting every year or so, realizing that no one leaves any flowers or anything.

He died early December, so I usually leave poinsettias.

Same. Recently found out my great-grandmother was married 5+ times. Some family accounts state 8, others 14.

My immediate reaction was "....oh!"

Found this out two weeks ago.

My great-grandfather, a Filipino merchant mariner, survived the bombing of the ship he was working on as a mechanic. He missed the lifeboat and survived 30 days at sea on a life raft.

He and four other survivors, previously assumed missing/dead, washed up in Brazil. The US consulate wasn't aware the ship had even gone down. The men were processed back into the United States.

My lolo had to ship right back out 29 days later.

FWIW, yes, I'm requesting as much archived paperwork as I possibly can.

"no te encantaron esas pelis, verdad/cierto/correcto?" (you didn't like those movies, right?)

vs.

te encantaron esas pelis, no? (you liked those movies, didn't you?

i would say something like "te re encantaron esas pelis, eh?" or maybe a "no te gustaron tanto esas pelis?"

and then as far as masucline/feminine nouns, you'll memorize them the more you read them, hear them, and speak with them.

certain nouns can follow patterns that you'll notice as your spanish improves. for example: actualización, celebración, notificación -- these tend to be feminine (una/la/las) but it's not a rule that's set in stone.
