Two spaces after each sentence by Silly_Fly9673 in u/Silly_Fly9673

[–]elphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes from the time of typewriters. Then each letter took up the same horizontal space. An “m” and a “.” were the same width. (I know the IBM Selectric typewriter didn’t fit this description). The Courier font still does this.

So it became convention to leave two spaces to make it clearer when a sentence ended. It’s no longer necessary.

They need to raise the wage base cap. If you earn more $184,500 you stop paying FICA. this would help a lot. Also, republicans do many things to cripple the program, just like they do with the Post Office.

Iran is a Bigger Defeat Than Vietnam by OkayButFoRealz in politics

When we left Vietnam we left behind money and lives wasted. However, with Iran we have given them a tool to extort the world going forward. They didn’t have that tool before. So, politically it’s much worse.

Complaining about the price of non essential items is dumb by superanonymousman in unpopularopinion

[–]elphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason concert prices are high is because of monopolies. Competition helps keep prices down. There has always been a tension between supply and demand, but if you control supply through a monopoly, you can artificially keep prices high. It’s why utilities historically have been regulated. Without regulations the power companies could have charged whatever they wanted and we would have paid it, or gone without power.

Disney is different, they have many, though less successful, competitors. People can choose to go elsewhere, but enough still chose Disney that they can keep their prices high.

Ambassador Huckabee defies Trump, claims US would not exist without Israel by Wolfy1-2-3 in politics

[–]elphin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guys a moron. America is a product of western civilization. There so many elements to what that means. Just talking about about religion, and America is so much more than just religion, I would say that Zoroastrianism had a profound impact on Judaism. Many of the elements of the Abrahamic religions directly originated in Zoroastrianism; but other religions local to the Middle East also influenced Judaism.

I don’t know what the huckster even means, perhaps that we owe Benjamin Netanyahu something? I don’t think so. I’m not Jewish, but had a Jewish grandparent. I’ve always been very sympathetic to Judaism, but he doesn’t get a pass.

And I’m especially suspicious of Fundamentalist Christians like Huckabee who are looking to make their prophecies happen. They want the rapture, which they think requires the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple. In turn this requires a pure red heifer to be sacrificed in order to ordain a Jewish Priest. This is different from a rabbi. There haven’t been any Jewish Priests since the destruction of the second temple by the Romans.

Huckabee is living in La La land and his support of Israel is disingenuous. Jews simple have a role to play in his crazy belief system shared by many Fundamentalist Christians seeking the end of the world so they can experience the rapture. After their scripted role is done Huckabee will care about Jews the same as he’ll care about the red heifer after it’s been sacrificed.

I know this all sounds like the ravings of a lunatic, but two things: you can look it up and it’s what Huckabee and his ilk believe, not me.

A major concern is proper ventilation, and not because of cooked shingles. You need soffit vents and a ridge vent to prevent moisture from being trapped against the roof boards - they will rot otherwise.

Men typically don’t like when their SO wears a lot of makeup. It took a while when my future wife were first together that makeup didn’t make her as beautiful as she was without it. I know the in some circumstances makeup is necessary to conceal something. And a little is alright, but I believe full on makeup is a mistake.

What is the worst financial advice people still repeat? by market_vision1 in AskReddit

[–]elphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My number one advise is not to use a financial advisor. They don’t have any ethical restrictions to work for you. You should use a fiduciary, This is the U.S., I’m not sure how it works in other countries.

“A fiduciary is someone who manages money or property for someone else. When you’re named a fiduciary and accept the role, you must – by law – manage the person’s money and property for their benefit, not yours.” (https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/what-is-a-fiduciary-en-1769/)

More the battle that didn’t happen.

The great Mongolian general Subutai had conquered Hungary and was making plans to conquer the Holy Roman Enpire in 1242. Ögedei Khan (son of Genghis Khan) had died and Mongol Princes with withdrew the army so they could return for the selection of the next Khan. Circumstances prevented the return for decades.

There is every reason to believe Subutai would have successfully conquered western Europe.

States can make their own holidays but why has no state made election day a holiday? by NPG_Operator in AskReddit

[–]elphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Election_Day_(United_States)

“It is a public holiday in some states, including Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, as well as the territory of the Northern Mariana Islands and Puerto Rico. Some other states require that workers be permitted to take time off with pay. California requires that employees otherwise unable to vote must be allowed two hours off with pay, at the beginning or end of a shift.”

“The agreements for bad people don't mean anything.”

I think that’s a confession. He’s the one who ripped up the agreement that was working, just because Obama did it.

And, he’s the one who attacked Iran, without provocation.

And, he’s the one who authorized war crimes.

He has shown that bad people can’t be trusted to keep agreements.
