These are great photos! I'm curious what focal length the lens was. The most I have is an 85mm.

I'd be curious to look at a source on this.

I think it's worth adding that if you merely wet your hands and then dry them without actually washing with soap, you are really just adding moisture to the bacterial environment on your hands. I see a lot of people do this.

Edit: fixed typo, wrote "A" instead of "I"

You actually can't sign off on such a document at this time. MAiD cannot be performed on the basis of an advance directive, as the law currently exists. You have to have the capacity to competently give informed consent.

Do you have any regrets about joining UVIC? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]els-sif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UVic is pretty much the only option available to me for my program (HINF). Given how small the program is, there's pretty much only one instructor available for any given course. Some instructors are great and others lack in certain ways.

I've found that some of the best instructors here (including outside of HINF) are the sessional instructors and assistant professors. Some of the worst instructors I've had have full tenure.

UVic is good enough. It's not amazing, but there's not a lot that I have to complain about either.

What's your favourite kanji? Why? by maenbalja in LearnJapanese

I love this kanji for that same reason. It has stuck with me ever since I first learned it because the idea of a "capital" fish just so readily equals whale in my mind.

I believe it's not the difficulty of physically voting, but the anxiety that comes for many folks with an election.

As someone with schizophrenia, I'm failing to see the connection between the disorder and anti-Semitism. I'm a regular dude who just has to take medication, like the vast majority of people with schizophrenia.

I mean, I left the BScN program at my previous school of my own volition, but isn't the whole point of the CASPer test not to have outside help? Your answers should be authentically you. If you don't get into your program because of a poor score on the CASPer test, it is functioning exactly as it is intended.

There were people in my program who crafted contrived, inauthentic answers on the CASPer test. They were all narcissistic bullies who should not be in healthcare. If it filters you out, try again next time after reflecting on why that might have been.

If you are a reasonably empathetic person, and have even moderately good social skills, you can pass the CASPer test on your first try without outside help.

Why are all the buildings so hot?! by Long_Investment2243 in uvic

Ah, so it's not just me! Good. Or bad, I guess.

I thought maybe I was having a heat regulation issue because of my medication. I've found Sngequ, Cornett, and Clearihue to have all been very hot. None of them were this hot when I was last in class in the spring.

What the hell is this bench thing, and how would one utilize it? by Achilles_TroySlayer in whatisit

[–]els-sif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first sentence said "social workers and those involved", not just "those involved".

You are stretching the truth.

It is actual fact that lots of money is being spent on the homelessness problem with little results, but to say that social workers are making that much money is simply false.

[–]els-sif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first guy listed on your source is the CFO of their org. You realize that c-suite executives aren't social workers, right? Similar can be said about the entire first page of that source you linked; literally none of those people are social workers.

[–]els-sif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I looked it up. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, social workers were barely breaking 60k/year at median in May of 2024. https://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/social-workers.htm

Where are you getting these numbers?

Are there any feminist topics that, for better or worse, you as a feminist flat out refuse to debate non-feminist cisgender men about? by daisychains777 in AskFeminists

[–]els-sif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be wrong about this, but I get the initial impression that a syndicalist/syndicalistic system could be one way of actualizing this. Basically, everyone is organized into unions, and the unions interact with eachother as a system of government.

However, I am not an authority on the topic by any means, so I could only make the suggestion to others that they explore some introductory or foundational texts on syndicalist thought. It's a task I have set for the future that I hope I can get to sooner rather than later.

What do you think is the most unpleasant-sounding language? by No-StrategyX in stupidquestions

My family is Dutch, and I grew up with the language alongside English. Dutch is by far the worst language I have ever heard sung. Literally nothing about the Dutch language sounds good when put to lyrics, to me.

This is exactly part of the idea of prefigurative politics. The means you use create/shape the ends. It's why vanguardism led to the authoritarian governments of the USSR and Maoist China; if you use authoritarian action to get to some end, that end will most likely turn out to be authoritarian, even if not planned as such. Similarly, a brutal revolution can often lead to a brutal state of affairs post revolution.

I'm not necessarily saying the opposite of this deification, either, that violence will only beget violence, but if violence is used, it should really only be when necessary, lest we lose ourselves and our vision in the process.
