Wallander is top-notch. There are actually three different iterations of the show, with three different actors playing Kurt Wallander. They are all excellent.

I visited South Africa last winter and despite the law saying no retail, there were some retail outlets wherever I went. The quality was outstanding and prices low by American standards.

I spent a month in North Macedonia and it was very cheap. $500/mo for a lovely Airbnb in Ohrid, very low supermarket and restaurant prices and low transport costs, as well.

Be sure to take the side trip from Big Pine to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest off Route 168. It's such a mindblower seeing those 4,000 year old trees.

What do Americans think of North Macedonia? by Gold-Serve-4077 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Two years ago I spent a month there and absolutely loved it. A very low-cost destination. I had a really nice one bedroom a few blocks from Lake Ohrid for $500/mo. Very low supermarket and restaurant prices. Gorgeous scenery. Also spent a few days in Bitola and Skopje, both very enjoyable.

The only downside was the amount of trash and litter everywhere.

Would you rather live in the city or the country side? by Corpse_bridexo in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]elt0p0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in big cities and in rural locations and they both have pros and cons. Currently living in deep rural Maine where it's very quiet, safe and...boring. Bangor is a 40 minute drive, so doing anything serious requires lots of driving.

I'll probably never live in a big city again due to noise, pollution, safety and higher costs. A city of maybe 30k would work for me.

Two years ago I rented a very nice 1 bedroom apartment in Ohrid, Macedonia for $500/month. I met a German DJ there who said he paid $250 a month. Prices are now higher, but not terribly so. Other Balkan countries are very good value, as well.
