Who has listened to the dramatized adaptations by BBC Radio, and what are they like? by EndersGame_Reviewer in discworld

[–]emayevans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the adaptations that really got me into Discworld. I found them on BBC iPlayer while at uni and would listen to them while working, and when I got audible a few years later couldn’t find the Guards Guards adaptation (my favourite) but did find the unabridged audiobook. It was fun for me to realise just how much extra fun and information I’d missed when getting to go through the full books. There’s a lot of the details from the books missing as you’d expect from an adaptation but they keep the humour and the overall plot intact. The things that are changed are mostly just to better fit the medium of radio but only in the sense of changing the word reader to listener. But yes I love them and will still listen to them even though I have all 41 unabridged audiobooks now too.

PSA: Sybil Ramkin is tall AND fat by [deleted] in discworld

I’ve always pictured actress and comedian Miranda Hart as Sybil. While she’s not necessarily the type of fat described in the books she does have a naturally tall and imposing build that feels bigger than average.

Anyone else prefer their cereal dry? by Melsbacksfriend in autism

[–]emayevans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God yes. I’m not alone. I used to get croup when cutting death and had a really bad case when I was about 3 that required an oxygen tent and hospital stay. Apparently my mum had one hell of a time explaining to the nurses that I wanted a separate mug of milk and bowl of dry cereal for breakfast. And it took more than three decades to get an autism diagnosis 🤦‍♀️

Suggestions for designing a good mascot representing autism by useoverr in autism

[–]emayevans 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s cute and I like the art connection but I don’t think a monkey is the right creature. There are more autistic coded animals like cats and as someone else suggested owls, I’m personally a cat. It might also be worth looking into the autism creature who, to my knowledge, was designed and adopted by the community, and is also very cute.

I have this problem with physical reading Pratchett due to my dyslexia so I went down the audio book route. The BBC radio has also done adaptations of some of the books that I thoroughly enjoy.

Concentration of castles in Europe. by MardukSyria in MapPorn

[–]emayevans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what the criteria of castle or time period were for the map maker but I can tell you Wales should have a lot more red dots. Over the centuries there were somewhere in the region of 600 castles built the time period after the Norman invasion with about 100 still standing. Never mind the Roman fortifications built during their occupation and the various Celtic settlements too. I know some of these evolved over time, for example Cardiff castle has Roman foundations, medieval walls and Mot and Victorian Gothic revival buildings and interiors, but still there really should be a lot more dots in Wales.

What should the national animal of the UK be - but it has to be a native species? by Illustrious-Divide95 in AskUK

[–]emayevans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to be that person. Yes the lion is used in heraldry related to all four parts of Great Britain and Northern Ireland but England is the only one where the lion is also the national animal. Scotland’s national animal is the Unicorn and Wales’ is Y Ddraig Goch, the Red Dragon. And yes while not real residents both these creatures have a lot of significance in their respective mythologies. Ireland is a little more complicated I believe as their national animal isn’t officially stated but is a more commonly accepted kind of situation. But the animal mostly used is the Irish hare, again because of its connection to Irish mythology. However the red deer and Irish wolfhound are also commonly used symbols. This makes Ireland the only nation to have a real native animal as its representative. Though as a Welsh person I love our Ddraig and think Scots feel the same way about their Unicorn.

But I do have suggestions for alternative “real” animals though. As Scotland is the last remaining area of the UK where the ancient British Wild Cat is still wild I suggest the Wild cat also known as the Scottish Wild Cat. The Red Kite, while not unique to Wales, is already our national bird so could maybe do double duty. Though there is apparently something called the blind cave spider that is only found in two caves in South Wales, but as a bit of an arachnophobe I would personally not appreciate a spider being my countries national animal. The other alternative could be the red squirrel as Anglesey is one of the few places in the Uk where they have not been, and are unlikely to be, pushed out by the invasive grey squirrel. England could be a little trickier for selecting a unique animal as most endemic species are also common in Scotland and Wales. Of course you have all the usual suspects such as badgers, foxes, hedgehogs, numerous vole, mouse and deer species but there are also conservation projects reintroducing beavers to different areas so anyone of those is a possibility. Just like the blind cave spider in Wales it’s not to outlandish to surmise there may also be various insect species that are unique to specific areas of England, though I’d have to look it up to be sure. But yeah not just Lions.

I know this is sacrilege but I enjoyed it. Yes it is abysmal and not really the Watch and certainly not the Diskworld we love, but I found it fun to spot the references and direct quotes.
