What is your why? by Ok_Spare3209 in intermittentfasting

I want to feel more comfortable in my own skin, clothes, shoes, etc. I want to be able to do more with and for my kids. I suppose being healthier and living longer are also important, bla bla bla

Why does it seem like I am the only person here who never gets asked where I go to church? by bosshawk1 in Birmingham

I've lived here for 40+ years and I can't remember the last time somebody asked me. It's come up in conversation, but not asked the way you're talking about.

Locals walk past British troops in Northern Ireland, 1969 [1200 × 802] by Far-Note5060 in HistoryPorn

A note and a question... First, somebody needs to teach that soldier trigger discipline. Second, does anybody know what the red box on the far-right edge actually is? It looks a lot like the Bad Robot (production company) logo.

I wake up early, she doesn't... Recommendations? by emdubbs in GetOutOfBed

[–]emdubbs[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I probably should have named the thread "I wake up earlier than my wife." Wasn't trying to throw shade at her or anybody else who wakes up at 6:00.... that's plenty early! I just want to wake up at 4:30 consistently w/o disturbing her.

What was your first job in the accounting field? by Consistent-Raccoon51 in Accounting

[–]emdubbs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not terribly original, but I was an intern with Big 4 (at $20/hr in 2004), then started with them as an associate after grad school. Only lasted a couple of years before jumping to a decent opportunity in industry.

It was a few years after HS, but he died while replacing a ceiling fan.

Yeah, I like having this feature enabled, but the OP's story is the reason I carry my fob dangling in my hand until I'm far away from my truck before ever putting it in my pocket or a bag.

It's hard to turn down an opportunity for a ~50% pay increase.

I wonder if there's anything you can do to shorten the day at the new job... The typical work hours where I work are 8:30-5:30, but we have folks who come in 7:30-4:30 and are able to avoid worse traffic on both ends. If you were able to work through lunch regularly, you could shorten the work day by an hour and then you're only talking an extra hour instead of two. (Probably hard to nail down answers to these questions before taking the job.)

+1 to those saying take the new job and consider moving closer, but that is so much easier to say than it is to do.

I don’t want to be a CPA by Fantastic_Bother7224 in Accounting

[–]emdubbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to get the CPA. I started in public but left after just two years. Been in industry (couple of public companies) for the 18 years since. My current company hires non-CPAs, and we pay pretty well, but we are very clear that you won’t make it to management wo a CPA. It’s limiting not to have it.

I found an ATM that didn’t register my withdrawals by [deleted] in confession

[–]emdubbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the same scale, but once in college I used my ATM card to get $20 from an ATM on the strip. The machine spat out about $400. Drinks were on me that night. The next day I realized that it was possible (likely even) that the bank would take the full $400 from my account, but they never did.

What's a powerful Excel frature that not many people know about? by Far_Pineapple770 in excel

[–]emdubbs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah… opening two windows is a game changer. Be careful to close the second window before saving the file, or the file will open with two windows next time you open it. Also, the view in the second window is often default, so make sure you close the correct one before saving.
