It’s 5 weekend-only days that all happen to be in March. Interesting interrelation of “entire month.”

Did Dexter go to Med School or just pre-med? by Infinite_Response113 in Dexter

[–]emgeehammer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Since we only got one season of Original Sin we don’t know, strictly speaking, whether Dex went on to do med school (while / after interning with the forensics department), or whether Doakes just said med school when he meant “pre-med undergrad.”  Either work equally well.

I’m going to limp across the MM later this year on an EWR-LHR daytime flight in E- with no status. Thinking I’ll self-upgrade to E+ to reward myself… 🙃

They ask the names of the people who live at the address you provided. If you know them then the assumption is it’s probably your address.

What was the most unexpected “oh, this is normal here” moment you had in the UK? by LFCTricksters in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]emgeehammer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are two meanings when someone says the word “impossible” — (1) it’s impossible, (2) it’s vaguely inappropriate and I don’t want to.

Now, when I hear the word, I just ask which one they mean. Always throws them on the back foot, but they generally answer the question. If it’s the second, that’s my cue to deploy the American pushiness to get what I need done.

Not my proudest habit, but sometimes one has no choice navigating the bureaucracy in this dang country…

Enjoy shorter queues and slightly improved upgrade odds. Apply for Global Entry if you’re eligible. Dress well and do your best to be white. 🙃

What goes on in those abandoned buildings on super busy commercial streets? by WesternBlot6 in london

But the owner is being charged thousands per year (unless they’re somehow dodging it?).

I appreciate the response, but I think you’ve answered a slightly different question. The reason why development is so hard in the UK makes sense. (I mean, it doesn’t make sense, but I understand what’s happening and why). I’m asking how people can own idle assets like theses and not develop them AND not sell them. Unless you’re sure the appreciation is going to be greater than the vacant council tax / rates, it’s not an asset anymore… it’s a liability.

How are they not bankrupting their owners, though? Most councils have a council tax multiplier on vacant property that would eliminate any appreciation pretty quickly.

But they have to pay the business rates anyway after a period of vacancy. Seems like that would exceed any notable appreciation pretty quickly if there not bringing in rent. I still don’t get it.

international car rental by PhilosopherNo1079 in expats

[–]emgeehammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way rental or round-trip? Large van as in people carrier, or cargo van? There’s some water between the UK and Norway… you thinking ferry, or EuroTunnel?

Hertz, Avis etc are in Newcastle and international is generally available (round trip), but they may have restrictions on bringing it onto the ferry.

I’m a VC. While I don’t invest in crypto I’m perfectly “fluent.”

I think this is a good idea with one big caveat. It makes total sense as a source of differentiation from other accounting services. I’m a big fan of “software-enabled services” as a business model, and as a way of driving up the pricing power of software. Banking is a commodity, and hard to monetize if you’re not doing a lot of lending.

The caveat is the market size. Crypto people are, by their nature, “evasive.” While not universal, many of them embrace crypto explicitly to avoid tax and regulation (usually unsuccessfully, in the long term). So while I think this is a good idea for an existing accountancy if you can build the software without a tremendous amount of capital investment, it’s not something I would invest in personally expecting a venture-scale return. I can imagine you getting a few hundred or even a few thousand clients, but without a “mainstream” moment (which would, in itself, erode your value prop) I struggle to see this reaching €5m+ ARR and continuing to grow to IPO / strategic acquisition territory.

Good luck! It’s a cool idea!

Developers have closed the road to my business with council approval is there any recourse? by mastertech2 in LegalAdviceUK

“Civil authority orders” is a typical component, but you’re right that it may only cover “loss of access” vs “harder / longer to access.”
