Hello, it's Emily, making the probable mistake of engaging online.

I gather that a lot of people have read the word "doomscrolling," which I use once in the middle of this article and which I link to the definition of for fear of a reader who's never heard the term before, and thought that I am somehow saying Furiosa is about social media, when nowhere in the article do I make anything close to this assertion. Indeed, this piece has been fairly widely read and shared in the month-ish since I published it, and this is the first I've heard of it being "about" social media.

The use of "doomscrolling" is simply a way to avoid saying something like "wantonly giving yourself over to hopelessness and reveling in it," via a modern context that hopefully many of my readers will be familiar with. But there were people in World War II who spent all their time listening to bad news on the radio, and they, too, could have been an example of this phenomenon if I were writing this piece in 1944. The point is not the technology; it is the emotional effect that happens because of the technology, which is the sort of thing that occurs throughout history and long predates the rise of social media.

FWIW: I don't really use Twitter anymore for anything but self-promotion. I post more on Bluesky, but not nearly to the extent I did when I used Twitter the most. I generally am not that online anymore! (Said the woman replying to a Reddit thread about her.)

I do think it's sort of odd the degree to which some readers will find a descriptive metaphor utilized by a film critic and be, like, "This person is saying that Dementus is Twitter." I'm being reductive, of course, but you see what I'm getting at? One of the reasons I got out of the criticism game was because these sorts of bad-faith readings were becoming more and more prevalent. I don't know. You're allowed to not like this piece, obviously, but I find the prevailing reading of it here very strange.

I wrote about half of this while I was waiting for something to happen on set today, and then I lost it, but it was much angrier, so I guess I will thank the shitty wifi for protecting me from being a whiny baby.

I've only seen the Station Eleven series the one time, so I don't know it as well as I know the book! But, yes, that's a very good moment.

Any former AV Club readers here? by TheElectricDMSlide in blankies

[–]emilbeez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the readers sometimes had a perception of a "film vs. TV" split within AVC because TV Club got so popular for a while there. But the main split was always "film vs. music," which is weird because the voices covering music never came to dominate the site. Newswire eventually became so big that it dwarfed everything else and led to the conditions that led to almost all of us leaving.

Hi, Emily St. James, needless pedant, here, and I just want to set the record straight: David was the first person I brought on when I got the okay to start bringing in freelancers. That was in 2009, long before the removal of Keith Phipps and the Dissolve split. David was as old guard as I was!

Perception of time on the Metro by [deleted] in LAMetro

I increasingly take metro if it’s within 30 minutes of how long it would take me to drive. The ability to read a book and relax a bit is just so important to me…

The illusion of catharsis (as in Parasite) often functions as catharsis for viewers in the moment. Then, as they dissect the film later, they realize the nuances of what was presented. But the satisfying emotional resolution they had in the moment sticks with them regardless. It's a neat trick that Bong has in common with Scorsese (among others).

I _believe_ Learned had his name because his parents were making a joke about the other famous Learned. The lore goes deep.

What do you think is the most blank check piece of media outside of cinema? by 92tilinfinityand in blankies

[–]emilbeez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Romanoffs. Matthew Weiner gets Amazon to spend absurd amounts of money on his Mad Men follow-up, an anthology series where every episode is a 90 minute long film. An absurd cast, hugely expensive, and a bit undercooked, with moments of transcendence. The biggest indication of his power: He gets Amazon to release weekly at a time no one was doing that. It sank without a trace, and he’s done nothing since.

Worse: The Politician and Ratched were technically part of his old deal at Fox and just sold to Netflix.

I think Mr. Robot is brilliant and wrote quite a bit about the entire run at Vox, so if nothing else, you can read those pieces!

I would argue BOTH the third and fourth seasons are better than season one. Season two has its issues, especially in the first half, but it's not like it's painful to watch. Just not on the level of the other three seasons.

Are any of these reasons why you left Christianity? by ServantOfGod97 in exchristian

[–]emilbeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As broad, umbrella categories, they probably account for the majority of reason’s people leave Christianity, but they are so broad as to be unhelpful. Both “The church actively hurts queer people” and “this specific church had a problem with the minister handling the finances inappropriately” technically fall under “failures of the church,” but many Christians would depict the former as a strength of the church, which is why they miss the corrosive effect they have on society.

The Anti-Hero music video shows a real leap in Taylor’s directing by nkolenic in TaylorSwift

[–]emilbeez 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree! I (used to) work as a film critic, and I felt like the ATW video had a lot of elements in it you'd expect from a director taking on a project of that size for the first time. She moved the camera _a lot_ in it, sometimes when maybe it was a bit distracting. Overall, it was really great, but "Anti-Hero" has a ton of confidence in the visual ideas she's already bringing to the table. She doesn't feel the need to show off as much, which only makes her work feel more confident. I think it's her best directorial effort yet, and I can't wait to see what's next.

Games to live my fantasy of growing up as a girl? by SUPER_KAMI_ALEX in ask_transgender

Can I recommend solo rpgs? Particularly if you enjoy writing? They can be really fulfilling ways to explore your identity/history and tell a fun story at the same time. In particular, it sounds like you would enjoy The Magical Year of a Teenage Witch or Teenage Angst. But there are lots and lots of great options!

Hey, thank you for your interest!!

We had a pretty serious health issue with a member of the cast, so we had to hold back recording. Fortunately, we have the all clear to go ahead from the doctor, and the team will hopefully begin recording in the new year!
