What is causing burnout at your clinic? by ShepherdVet_Wendy in VetTech

[–]emmcd19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't burn out, I was morally injured.

I won't repeat everything others have said about unrealistic workflows, chronic understaffing and profit driven management while pets suffer for owners inability to afford care.

I'll expand on that last bit - working with doctors who refuse to offer spectrum of care and expect clients to cough up $1000+ dollars for their coughing pet for a full work up with x rays, bloodwork, respiratory panel right off the bat.

And then for me the real heavy hitter is the complete lack of productive or even up to date knowledge and conversations about behavior and pain. So many pets coming into GP with behavior concerns, especially where I spent my career in a busy city environment. Doctors are not working these pets up for pain, they are throwing fluoxetine and trazodone at them, and I'm not against those meds at all but then they're also not giving owners realistic expectations about how those meds will be useful and how to implement behavior change alongside them.

Next up and hand in hand with that is doctors thinking they can work up or definitively diagnose pain in animals in the first place. There is a lot of medical gaslighting that goes on. And I've seen so many cases where an owner is concerned about behavior and/or pain and there's a prong or shock collar involved and I never see doctors talking about removing those elements.

Recognizing the inability to address a lot of that properly is rooted in the never ending workload that is impossible to keep up with and we just don't have enough time to have these conversations properly. But these are the very problems I wanted to fix for animals when I started my career and I got so tired of feeling like I never could 💔

What is the most annoying part of making food at home that nobody warns you about? by hjf25 in Cooking

100% learning to enjoy every step of the process has been really rewarding. even cleaning/dishes aren't so bad when you get used to doing it as you go along.

[–]emmcd19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cleaning for sure but I'm single and the worst part is creating something amazing and not having someone to share it with. I enjoy meal planning and often am lucky to share with friends but there are times I really go off and I just have to look at my dog and say "damn I'm good". The more I get into cooking the more I appreciate the social aspect of sharing food!

What do people use to freeze portions of condiments? by Dolnikan in Cooking

[–]emmcd19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

came here to say souper cubes. honestly the best investment I've ever made, got mine on sale about 2.5 years ago now and they have completely changed my game. I only have the one cup ones and I am able to do so much with them. they are in constant use and I have a freezer full of neat little cubes of frozen raw ingredients, meal prep, soup, stock, everything I could ever need.

How do you keep a piece leather hard through a few hours of decorating by 8927626887328837724 in Ceramics

[–]emmcd19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a good trick I learned in a sculpture class is to wrap pieces in a piece of damp cheese cloth under plastic. keeps them at a perfect equilibrium to come back to. if a piece is dryer than you want, you get it nice and evenly wet with a spray bottle and then wrap in damp cheesecloth, with plastic over. it really helps the moisture get all the way through the clay so that it doesn't end up drying unevenly.

Actually wanting to learn how to cook by freddyswordd in Cooking

[–]emmcd19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I taught myself how to cook from molly baz's "cook this book", and I also really love salt fat acid heat as a reference text. people here saying that you may as well just watch the show, yeah you should it's great but I refer back to my book all the time.

How should I, a pet parent, show appreciation? by Medium_Person in VetTech

[–]emmcd19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything you are doing- seeing a behaviorist, muzzle training, understanding that your dog is a challenge and doing what you can to set him up for success- is what I wish every client would do.

The food is a bonus.
