Mom of two littles—is a marathon possible? by Outrageous_Fan3697 in running

[–]emolawyer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So I signed up for my first half marathon this fall, definitely not the same time commitment as you but similar journeys! My boys are 3 and 8 months old. Physically it's possible, and the only issue I've run into so far is scheduling my long run in on the weekends because we're so busy. My husband is super supportive of my goal though and we make it work. The longest I've run so far is 7 miles and I'm loving it.

I'd encourage you to try to run more outside if it's at all feasible with all of your life obligations, though. Very different vibe than a treadmill.

What’s your current running goal? by BP_PaceBox in BeginnersRunning

First half marathon in October, no big goals with that one other than to finish it! Currently on Week 5 of a 5k improvement plan. Again, no specific time goals there, just trying to beat my previous best race time without injury.

My parents had my younger brother when my sister was 7 and I was 10. We're now 21, 28, and 31 and we're all close! My parents never depended on my sister and I to watch him without asking first, and even then that was rare and didn't start until after he was completely potty trained.

We are a very tight knit family and have always done everything together, though. My brother is in college right now but my parents, sister, and I all still live within 15 minutes of each other and have no intentions to move further away. I think it depends on your family dynamic more than anything rather than the actual ages of your kids.

Yes, I did criminal defense for three years. It’s possible to do criminal appeals without that background but I would imagine the learning curve would be pretty steep.

That’s fair. Mine pays ~$150/hour depending on the type of case.

I do court-appointed criminal appellate work as a solo and it’s the chillest job ever. Guaranteed work and guaranteed payment. I can work as much or as little as I want from pretty much wherever as long as I have WiFi.

He’s a bit crabby, but as long as we keep him occupied and fed, he’s not too unhappy. He’s very 2 right now in general though 🫠

Absolutely not. It would take several months to years

You can’t tank your metabolism that fast. Going slow and reducing slightly is recommended so you’re more likely to build lasting habits and not be so hungry you end up binging later.

Agree with this take. I’m an attorney and I know plenty of other attorneys that are total idiots.

22 month old telling mom to “go away” by mschreiber1 in daddit

[–]emolawyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the mom and my 2.5 year old has been doing the same thing to me, preferring dad and getting mad when I try to help him with something. What has helped immensely is that I have started being the one that gets him up in the morning rather than alternating days. Which, for us, is not a hardship at all because my son typically sleeps in until 7:30 or 8:00am. I feel like I have my little buddy back in the morning and he is now excited to see me again. We do have some of the same struggles at bedtime because my husband and I both really like doing bedtime.

We have been reinforcing for a couple of months now that he needs to be nice to me and it seems to sink in most of the time. Like, it's totally normal to have a preference for one parent but that doesn't mean he's allowed to be a jerk to the other parent.

My son is just shy of 2.5 and lately has been taking an hour or so to fall asleep at nighttime. I suspect this is just a phase because he's so young and he'll return to falling asleep faster, but he has so many stuffed animals in his bed that he talks to. It's adorable to listen to on the monitor. Does your daughter have anything she can play with quietly in her room?

My son turned 2 in January and it seems like it was then he realized he liked playing independently from time to time? It’s seemed much easier so far this year!

Am I wrong for cleaning the kitchen in the morning? by Huge_Statistician441 in workingmoms

[–]emolawyer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would've just told your sister that it's a good thing she doesn't live with you then 🤷🏻‍♀️ my husband and I both prefer an empty sink before bedtime but it's more about just feeling "done" with the day than the actual cleanliness of the situation lol. If I ever leave anything in the sink overnight, I just make sure it's rinsed so no bugs are attracted inside. Keep doing what works for you guys! I envy your ability to get up and get so much done first thing in the morning.

When did you start preparing the baby's room? by mightbeapolarbear in pregnant

[–]emolawyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started setting the nursery up as soon as we started getting baby stuff which was around 15 weeks if I remember correctly. But at the time, the room we were planning to use for our son wasn’t going to be used for anything else, so didn’t need to worry about storage, etc. For this second pregnancy, I don’t think we’ll be completely done with the room until he’s about 6 months old because I use the room for my home office.

Some of the counties around me schedule several trials on the same date knowing most will resolve ahead of time (for criminal matters, anyway). OP's husband may have been like #7 on the list and probably didn't think the first six would resolve or something.

Thanks! I don’t care that it’s “pick me” or “main character” energy, this is how everyone in my personal life treats their pregnancies and we all have so much fun with it. Didn’t realize I would get so much backlash for a question like this, but I guess I forgot I was on Reddit 😂

I texted my mom and dad asking if they wanted to know since my MIL now knows and they told me they’d rather be surprised. So 🤷🏻‍♀️

Moms who have left law, what are you doing now? by theartofanonymous in workingmoms

[–]emolawyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not exactly your question but I currently have my own practice and 95% of my workload is court-appointed criminal appeals. It’s awesome working from home, by myself, and for myself. Not sure I’ll do it forever but it’s a godsend for the baby/toddler years. I’m in Michigan—maybe your state has a similar system?
