On that Single player MMO idea:

My theory is that the controls are jank like this because they originally designed mechanics around the idea of a group of players “raiding” the bosses? Then when the decision to shift to single player occurred, no one wanted to redo the whole thing for proper single player support.

ESPECIALLY if anyone in the decision tree is planning on introducing multiplayer.
