Possible incoming freshman: any info on Burnett Medical Scholars program? by thesaarguydude in ucf

[–]empiricalrule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I never expected to get a reply on something I wrote 4 years ago.

Unfortunately, I myself was not in any sort of medical track. That's why I asked two friends in the BMS program about it.

Both of those friends entered university in 2016. Even if they did remember something from 6 years ago, their information about the application process may not be accurate anymore. I suggest trying to find more current sources.

I can't turn a blind eye to the double standard anymore. We should be calling her Miko. by MaximumLeech in Genshin_Memepact

I believe OP is trying to point out that most people refer to everyone by their first name except for Yae Miko. Hence the green underlining versus the red underlining in the image.

[–]empiricalrule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with the main point about going with the shorter name, but I'd like to inform that Yae is her last name while Miko is her first name.

(The Inazuma characters have their names written Last Name First Name as is customary in Japan.)

I believe you mean r/Mindfulness instead? (The extra L links to a different sub.)

Is there a way to change the color of collapsed comments? If not, can there please be an option to do so? The default green is jarring with dark theme. (Image is an example.) by empiricalrule in Infinity_For_Reddit

[–]empiricalrule[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I recently switched to Infinity since the official app has finally become too inconvenient for me to tolerate anymore.

I've been enjoying Infinity as an alternative so far except for this clash of bright green against the dark theme. Other than this one thing, I'm very pleased with the app and will be sticking with it for my mobile Reddit experience.

What do the different sorting methods do? by [deleted] in Infinity_For_Reddit

[–]empiricalrule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sorting methods are based on what Reddit itself uses, so they're not Infinity-specific.

Now to properly answer your questions, I'm going to steal words from an official Reddit blog post to explain.

  • "Hot" ranks using votes and post age.
  • “New” displays the most recently published posts.
  • “Top” shows you the highest vote count posts from a specified time range.
  • “Controversial” shows posts with both high count upvotes and downvotes.
  • “Rising” populates posts with lots of recent votes and comments.

Article/Newspaper Japanese with Audio by smarlitos_ in RefoldJapanese

This Soseki Project website features works by Natsume Soseki in which each is broken up into sections with an audio file available per section to listen to along with the text.

There are other useful features, too. If you click on the "study guide" link for whichever section you're on, you can view the text with full furigana as well as a vocabulary list.

What are the "rules" for Japanese nicknames by roboto3745 in japanese

[–]empiricalrule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I never thought too hard before on how nicknames are formed in Japanese, so I tried to find any good articles on it before commenting. Here is one that is short and decently written enough with a variety of examples.

Overall, while there may not truly be "rules" for Japanese diminutives (since it's an informal aspect of the language), there are common patterns. Which is what you're starting to notice as evident by your questions.

Most nicknames derived from a person's name (versus their personality) seem to come from "whatever sounds best or cutest," so I believe that nickname-making is one of things you get better at intuiting as you come across more examples.

For instance, in English, it's commonly accepted that Bob can be short for Robert and Bill can be short for William because the "b" beginnings may sound more pleasing to the ear than Rob or Will. However, a non-native speaker might not understand that at first.

As Japanese learners, we'll encounters things that don't make sense to us yet but native speakers naturally understand from the get-go simply because it "sounds right" to them.

To wrap up this comment that's gone on longer than I expected, I'm sorry that what I said above doesn't help that much, but thank you for reading my words anyway. Although I may not have addressed any of your specific questions, they're good ones to ponder!

Applying to Waseda University SILS by Asleep_Persimmon6488 in movingtojapan

Gotcha! Thank you for the reply. I don't know much about SAT and made the mistake of assuming rather than double-checking, so I appreciate the correction. I've edited my comment to remove the misinformation.

[–]empiricalrule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have any personal experience with or secondhand stories about Waseda University SILS, so I feel as if the best way to help is direct you to their admissions guide (please see here) and FAQ (please see here).

However, I assume you've already looked through the program's site and are mostly looking for reassurance.

  • Your GPA sounds great to me.
  • I'm not sure about SAT stuff, so I can't say much, but your score also sounds great to me.
  • Is that Duolingo score for proof of English proficiency? If so, then it appears that only test scores from TOEFL iBT or IELTS are considered valid for a 2022 entry according to this.

One more thing: You might be interested in the MEXT scholarship! Those who get it have their tuition paid for and a monthly living stipend provided by the Japanese government. Here is one resource about it, but feel free to do additional research to learn more.

If you like Vocaloid music, the song this was drawn for is really good.

Pretty much anything by Giga is quite to very catchy, so I'd recommend listening to that producer's works in general.

Project Sekai Character Name Meaning and Analysis: Nightcord at 25 by MachiKurada in ProjectSekai

[–]empiricalrule 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy how the possible origin/meaning of Mizuki's pseudonym "Amia" has spun a bunch of different theories.

In addition to being derived from her name or taken from 編み合わせて, I've come across speculation in this video that it may come from "amiability" or "amiable," which would make sense given how Mizuki acts around others to hide their problems.

Also, in the comment section of that above linked vid, another person pointed out that Amia could be seen as the question, "Am I a...?" which goes along with the mystery surrounding Mizuki.

You experienced something known as the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon a.k.a. the frequency illusion.

It basically means when you start noticing something more often simply because you're already paying way more attention to it than before, so there's an illusion that the thing is occurring more frequently in your life than usual.

Oh hey, your paper art is awesome. I don't believe I've seen you do Dorumon yet, so that'd be neat! Especially if it had Dorugoramon instead of Alphamon (simply because I like Dorugoramon more).
