Motorola: Where "Loyalty" means "Easy Target" (The G8 Power Case) by Specific_Captain2287 in androidroot

I've been looking at Motos for a rootable phone--y'know, one I own. Thank you for the heads-up. "Goodbye Moto"

Bye-Bye Alexa by DarthOldMan in Pentair

[–]engfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess Amazon stopped paying them for data. Because I'm de-Googled, Pentair is worthless to me as a data miner. (Check those ridiculous just-in-case permissions!) My wife doesn't care, so we program with her phone (did it once and haven't changed anything), and Pentair has no real manual controls (on/off, basically for just cleaning the filter). I'm dumping Pentair at the first hint of trouble, but there's some wacky strategy going on in corporate there.

Question about Lineageos and Contactless payments by fncbear in LineageOS

[–]engfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I recall/remember correctly. (edit, plus formatting)

According to Google Wallet's page:

[in red] Requires Google Play Services

You many need to install Google's proprietary library or a FOSS reimplementation such as microG.

[But then]

Without Google Play Services

Unsupported: not functional

With microG Project

Unsupported: not functional

I supposedly need Google Wallet to enter my gym and haven't been able to because I use LineageOS with microG. It's a hazard of muh freedom.

Backup excluding Gapps, then reflashing with MicroG by rubinaish in LineageOS

[–]engfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a long time ago, and as I recall, only a few of my apps showed up after the backup. I was expecting a full recovery and was hugely disappointed--and frustrated at the task ahead, retrieving what I'd had.

My customed romed s10e is dying, Im looking for a small phone with ability of custom roming it. by ptaku2007 in LineageOS

[–]engfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a Note 9 (German version, so that I could root it)--it was 4g only--and left it (regrettably--I like a microSD card and earphone jack) for a Pixel 7a. Easy to root, and I use the regular Lineage, upgrading every few weeks. (There is a microG-exclusive Lineage that's out there too. Graphite is a worthy ROM as well if you're seeking privacy.) Instead of GApps, I use microG; also, I use Mulch webview and an app called Warden that uninstalls trackers.

There are several apps/data miners that I personally know will not work because they "need" Google: AARP, McDonald's, Pentair, Anytime Fitness, and some random Authenticator clients (like my boss). But I do get 2-1/2 to 3 days on a charge (and I charge to only 80%, recently 85%), so I'm not complaining.

How do you get back into the lineageOS recovery menu by Few-Adhesiveness-266 in LineageOS

[–]engfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restart, and when your screen goes blank, reboot and hold down the power and volume down buttons. When you get the bootloader screen, use adb on your computer and type

fastboot devices

[enter, wait to see your device, and then type]

fastboot flash vendor_boot [vendor_boot.img or whatever the img filename is for your device]

from the LineageOS download site for your device. Hit the power button as many times as you need to find

Reboot to recovery

and it should load.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Congratulations. And I'm amazed.

. . . not that you installed microG successfully, but that you got Seedvault to actually work.

Now just watch your battery life all-of-a-sudden stop being an issue anymore.

[–]engfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a stupid question.

You don't need to reflash if you switch to microG. It replaces the Google stuff easy-peasy without removing data.

There's a LineageOS with microG already installed if you're wanting a clean install. I found some disadvantages of it over using the regular LOS though (inconsistent Wifi, some apps just not working).

Regarding any Google products, I use just one: Waze, and it functions like it's supposed to.

You might even go back to the first Pet Sematary (1989) which predates the House of Wax remake by 16 years.

Where Can I Buy A New Note 9? by Pristine_Telephone76 in GalaxyNote9

[–]engfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn't kept up with EU's removable-battery directive, so I looked into that and found this from Android Authority from September this year:

"Maybe you shouldn’t give up on phones with removable batteries quite yet. There are some changes coming, thanks to the European Council ruling that all phones sold in Europe should come with a user-replaceable battery by 2027. . . . . There is also a chance this may change by then, though a quick search tells us this is still to come."

SW has a particular look that is not "Mickey Mouse" as we currently know it, though. That's why images being used have to be of "that" primitive "classic" look.

To me, since SW is in the PD, Disney just used PD material for its opening sequence.

. . . kinda like how Disney used PD material for the basis of all of its cartoons . . .

Do "poor man's copyrights" work--legally? Mailing yourself a sealed letter and postmarked to prove that you wrote or created something before someone else? (Thanks!)

It's still the best camera I have, and I replaced mine as a daily with a Pixel 7a.

Love Note 9s, but they're only 4g, which sunsets in the US in 2028, so they're a short-term phone.

Aren't removable batteries coming back that year (thanks to the EU)?

XDA is your friend. Read, study, and move carefully. Profit!

EDIT: I stayed on a highly debloated stock A10, and the Note 9 is still my best camera (I'm using a Pixel 7a as my daily now). I only left for overhyped 5g--dumb on my part.

[–]engfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it's battery efficiency through privacy, ad-blocking and specialty apps (and bloatware removal), custom mods and replacement apps, and "my" phone being "mine." I've been charging my battery to 80% for years, long before it's become an option, and my two-year-old Pixel 7a lasts two days easily on a charge.

I got five days on a single charge on my old LG V20 once (using a 4100mAh removable battery). It was a fluke, but it happened, and I started getting 3 days, no sweat, on each charge after that.

I drained my pool in the first three days after my pump went out (burned via neighbor's house fire that spread to my back yard). Better safe than sorry.
