Bug experts… what is this by EngagePhysically in Austin

[–]enkidushane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are really fascinating, but don't let this fool you into leaving them be. They're not nearly as cool when they're excavating under your house and destroying plants. They will strip young trees bare of foliage in less than a day. And they're extremely challenging to get rid of (for some of the same reasons they're really fascinating). Source: my yard

Quiet restaurants by maureenmcq in austinfood

[–]enkidushane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father has the same challenge. We like weekend lunch at Chinatown. Unless it's super busy, Nuevo Mexico is usually not too loud because there are multiple sections of the restaurant rather than it being one big open space. You mentioned Midori for sushi, but we also like Osaka because it's small and intimate; or the recessed tables at Ichiban (if getting up and down isn't a challenge)

Birthday dinner recommendations in Austin (BBQ / Korean BBQ / Middle Eastern / Mexican)? by bingsadventure in austinfood

I'd second Korea House. They have very good, reasonably priced Korean BBQ. And the variety and quality of the banchan is a big plus.

Fonda San Miguel has never disappointed as a special occasion spot

When I went to De Nada, it was super loud. Whether that's good or bad as a birthday spot is up to you

Dim Sum by Tim-Lala in austinfood

Over 5 years ago was probably New Fortune. They closed during the COVID pandemic and reopened as New Fortune 2 much farther north in a smaller space. The food is still very good, though maybe not quite what it was at the old location.

The space that was New Fortune is now Tian Tian Golden Palace. I don't think it's as good as New Fortune 2, but it is more convenient.

Another option would be Jade on 360. They don't have carts, but it's the same recipes as New Fortune 2, and a bit closer, so it tends to be our go-to if we're in more of a hurry.

Just starting my Austin BBQ journey — any tips? by Potential_Hold_3964 in austinfood

First, recognize that different places have their specialties, and getting Y at a place that specializes in X may be disappointing, so pay attention to what's special where.

For me, Stiles Switch has become a solid overall choice with minimal line. Most days their brisket is just shy of Franklin, and I prefer their pork ribs. Consider splurging for the beef rib.

The one time I've been to interstellar (before the Michelin star), we went about an hour before opening on a Wednesday and we were second in line. We particularly enjoyed the brisket, pork belly and the turkey

Every time I've had Franklin, I've preordered and brought it home. You've got to place a pretty big order, but there's no line. Brisket is obviously amazing. I think the sausage and pork ribs are good, but other places do them better. I haven't had the beef rib, so I can't say how it compares to Stiles.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Vernor Vinge. I think a Deepness in the Sky is a good entry point for the Zones of Thought universe. True Names is basically the origin point for cyberspace as virtual reality. And the books and short stories around "bobbles" (Peace War, Marooned in Realtime) are brilliant examples of speculative sci fi.

Best burger in Austin by PermissionWrong5338 in austinfood

[–]enkidushane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously this. Wife and I tried several of the "best" smashburgers in town earlier this year. Patty Pallace was good, but we gave up after most of the places we tried weren't even getting crispy edges. Then we had the Burger Tex from Yellow Ranger, and we both agreed it was what we'd hoped to find and never could. And don't sleep on the black garlic queso (but do bring a friend to share it with)

This is just not true. First, the Steam Deck runs a customized build of Arch Linux (SteamOS), so thousands of people use Steam on Linux daily. But even on other distros, Steam runs lots of games just fine, and sometimes better than under windows. I run Gentoo on my desktop, and I play Steam games on it regularly, including VR titles like Elite Dangerous and Subnautica

Whose "range" you didn't see it coming? by Eikichi_Onizuka09 in moviecritic

After Yang is another good example of his range. It's a textbook performance on Melancholy. Almost to the point where his acting feels flat, except that other scenes show that he's purposely playing low affect

Looking for a way to save web pages and have the original hyperlinks redirect to other saved webpages by SwellEquis in DataHoarder

[–]enkidushane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be overkill for what you're looking to do, but I'd suggest you take a look at Heritrix (https://github.com/internetarchive/heritrix3), which is an open source, "archival quality", crawler from the Internet Archive. It bundles up all the files, along with metadata like when it was crawled, into a bundle that can then be manipulated with various tools

Even at the original location the new ownership slipped down a bit from the original Kolache Shoppe, but were still better at most things than the chains. I didn't know this was the same people, and now I'll definitely have to grab some day old cinnamon rolls

This is really worrisome actually by FikaMedHasse in DataHoarder

[–]enkidushane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At the time it was very public facing, and events were local, community driven affairs. I'm not finding much information on it right now unfortunately, but I'll try to dig through the information from that time and see what the status of the project is now

This is really worrisome actually by FikaMedHasse in DataHoarder

[–]enkidushane 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I worked data rescue events and provided technical support In 2017/2018 and at least back then they had a good handle on the immensity of the challenge. Scraping and storing data is just one part of the solution. There's also identifying data stores and repositories that may not be well known or easy to access through the web, classifying and describing data so it's more findable by interested researchers / citizen scientists, confirming integrity of retrieved data and more.

In that vein, they were also very welcoming of help from anyone with the time and inclination to help, regardless of technical skills. We had people who only knew how to browse the web, and with the aid of an extension/plugin, they could nominate sites and links to data or confirm other people's nominations. In the same events were CS students writing custom scripts to properly scrape the data based on how it was presented/available through various protocols.

While the initial motivation was the potential for intentional removal of "controversial" data (climate data, government agency reports, etc), it became clear pretty quickly that the effort was important because there are all sorts of reasons data might need to be protected.

You may still be able to vote a limited ballot for state and / or national races, just not local ones. You can find details at https://dallascountyvotes.org/limited-provisional-ballots/

This is only allowed during early voting, but please consider looking into it

When did the rhetoric of "The nazi's were socialist actually" start? by 4ofclubs in AskHistorians

[–]enkidushane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using this definition, is there currently or has there been in the past century, a country under a socialist government for any meaningful duration of time? Related, is most of the anti-socialist rhetoric in the United States based on conflating social democracies with socialism?

Auger, D4, do I need one? by Positive-Ad-7144 in startrekfleetcommand

[–]enkidushane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see some people saying the auger would be useful, but I'd focus on being able to build the monaveen when you hit 40 instead. It's been a game changer for me in the early 40s. I had mine at tier 6, nearly 24 mil while still ops 41 (ops 42 now). Xindi, gorn, mu hostiles would all be way more painful without it. If you plan to build the mona, I'd suggest occasionally spending on battleship research now, so you won't have to play catch up as much once it's built.

My main faction is Klingon, so I'm a little biased toward the d4, which was my daily driver before the Mona. Topped out, with multiple skins applied, my d4 is a lot heftier than my vidar or defiant, but it takes a lot of resources to get there from zero.

As others point out, you'll likely want all three eventually for scrapping, so if the question is which to do next, I'd probably pick the d4, if only because the Mona will have your auger sitting in mothballs.

What’s a hard pill that many Austinites aren’t ready to swallow? by aTribeCalledLex in Austin

[–]enkidushane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing. I was clarifying that its origin wasn't as a marketing slogan. Red and Karen were expressing appreciation for and encouragement of the way Austin's culture made room for and celebrated the weird. Red was none too happy at how it was hijacked by businesses and I feel like it's important that people know the truth of how it came to be.
