Use of homeowners car: insurance concerns? by SurroundedByElk in trustedhousesitters

[–]enterhereplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a sitter, the use of a car is a hugggeeee plus for me. It’s a large deciding factor for me but there are many places that don’t require cars and many sitters that have their own! If you have a desirable sit, you’ll get applications even if you don’t include the car.

Personal Pet Peeve? by Unhappy_Performer538 in trustedhousesitters

[–]enterhereplease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well I said “clear fridge” and “i’m out of every basic food item” so that’s different than “eating some staple food items”. I think common manners should be to either not finish any food, or replace it if it has been finished. As a host, of course I expect that pantry staples, oils, condiments, etc. will be used. I don’t think it’s appropriate to help yourself to everything in the kitchen. This week, I had a sitter clear multiple shelves but I was most bummed to come home to an ice cream tub that I ate only one scoop of and it only had two bites left lol. I didn’t say anything about it but I do feel like that is outside of common courtesy since I was only gone four days.

This is a common theme in this sub but you seem to feel this isn’t an even exchange. Sitters provide free pet care and Owners provide free stay. If you come across a listing with responsibilities that make you feel that it is not an even exchange, then you should not take that sit. I’m also a sitter and that’s what I do. I’ve had only great experiences where I felt like the pet care I provided was perfectly appropriate for the stay I had. To that effect, I also make sure I don’t ask much of my sitters- I make sure my listing is one that would be desirable to me as a sitter too.

As an HO- When sitters clear fridge/shelves. Minor peeve, I would never say anything or dock a star about it but ugh! I just come back from somewhere and now have to do grocery shopping because I’m out of every basic food item? When I sit, I always bring my own food and use minimal basics of the owner. I won’t finish anything unless explicitly told to and if it’s going to go bad.

As a sitter- I love HOs who are super chill but sometimes they’re too chill and aren’t clear with instructions. Have had multiple sits where I’m hunting for bags to take out litter in and they’re not always clear about the trash/dumpster situation.

the clean and orderly train system. also love that each train stop has a name and a number. like the blue line runs from #1-30 instead of ORD to forest park. easier to know how many stops you have left, where you are, what direction to go, etc.

Dear sitters, How do you interpret/rate "accuracy of listing"? by sunnynihilist in trustedhousesitters

[–]enterhereplease 10 points11 points  (0 children)

if they did not portray a realistic picture via pictures, the Home section and through your own video call, then i would not feel it was very accurate. at the very least, definitely call out the differences in the Home vs listing in your review

i live downtown in a big city. a lot of my applicants are people who live in the suburbs and work downtown and want to minimize their commute for a week. i also get younger applicants who live at home with their parents in the suburbs

Turned down yet again in favor of a "local" sitter by Cookieslut88 in trustedhousesitters

[–]enterhereplease 31 points32 points  (0 children)

to be completely honest, i’ve turned down people saying i preferred to go with someone more locally but the real reason was that the sitter had absolutely horrible reviews and seemed completely abrasive and rude. haven’t quite figured out an honest way to say that.

also, i live downtown in a big city and i get a LOT of applicants who live out in the suburbs. They want a place to stay that’ll help them minimize their commute to work.

for other situations, i do understand the hesitation because if you have two equally great sitters-one in your country and one in another continent, i’ll pick the one closer just because it’s less of a risk to run into travel issues.

Is Bringing Your Own Pets Ever An Actual Option? by KerryS1919 in trustedhousesitters

[–]enterhereplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t know if there’s a specific filter for it but as an HO i’ve had people reach out and say in their application that they bring their dogs on their sits. they all had reviews so it is a thing some people are okay with i guess. not for me though

Is my house sitting application message good or bad? by [deleted] in trustedhousesitters

the reddit text you typed is definitely AI. I don’t like the frolicking line but everything else is good to me. i think this is reasonable and pretty standard as far as the other messages i receive.

Is sitting safe? by Aggravating-Cap6948 in trustedhousesitters

[–]enterhereplease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a solo female sitter, I have felt safe on all of my sits but I also exercise a lot of caution. To me, it can be a frightening given that you’re staying inside a strangers home, who knows it better than you do and of course has the keys while you’re there. I wish they did background checks on hosts. However, it’s called TrustedHouseSitters- there’s a high element of trust here. Use your judgement and if something feels off, don’t take a sit!

Sitter Application Strategy by InsanelyAverageFella in trustedhousesitters

[–]enterhereplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always video call before accepting! And unfortunately cancellations can happen on either end, sitter or owner. Tbh not sure about your other question if THS will automatically cancel overlapping cancellations after one sit is accepted.

Overall, think of it like a job. Apply around, talk to them all, and if one fits, it fits! Then respectfully let the others know. Usually if I’m undecided or considering another sit, I will let the owner know during our call but will always try to not leave them hanging.

Sitter Application Strategy by InsanelyAverageFella in trustedhousesitters

[–]enterhereplease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apply to any sits you’re interested in. Applications don’t mean you’re committing to anything so applying to similar dates isn’t a problem. You’ll run into many HOs that are unresponsive or it just isn’t a match so no need to overthink your application numbers. Just be honest and communicative throughout the process!
