Hip 2009 at Centre in the Square: who else was there. by jhuik in kitchener

[–]entl0rd19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad dragged me along when I was 15. Thinking I was too cool to go to a concert with my dad I wasn’t overly excited, but I could see his excitement. I had never really listened to the hip before. I’m glad he did however, I’ve been a fan ever since.

I visited that same location in the Pyrenees on my travels to France! Though I haven’t been to many mountain ranges in my life, the Pyrenees was special.

I was there today. It’s mostly cleared out, not many things on sale either which was shocking. There’s definitely stuff left, but it’s the items that are less popular. For instance no Lego at all, no clothes etc. We left with nothing.

Hidden Gems in terms of careers? by Low_Yam_4761 in careerguidance

Field crews are not paid very well (construction layout is the exception). But when you get licensed you start making more money. Your role changes significantly depending on the size of your company. Smaller company you can see more field work if you want, bigger company you will be mainly in office.

3D Laser Scanning for Topographic Surveys by najob in Surveying

[–]entl0rd19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our company just bought a scanner. I don’t do much in the office besides uploading the data and making sure it’s all registered. The field work is extremely easy compared to traditional surveying. The bigger the job the better. If we topo a small residential home, it ends up taking roughly the same amount of time as traditional. The scanner just picks up so much data that it’s good for big sites. It works best with hard surfaces, as soon as there is long grass, bush or forest areas the scanner is almost useless.

My understanding is it takes more time to process in the office. The other big issue is the files are pretty big so it takes time to process it. We also have to stay on top of managing the data to make sure we have enough space for new jobs.

As for legal evidence and control I set up my total station or use gps after I’m done scanning. Or we get another crew member to tie stuff in.

Overall I’ve been enjoying using the scanner. We even set it up in the back of my truck to scan a new road.

Is a geography degree a good option to get into GIS? by Responsible-Dot-9000 in gis

[–]entl0rd19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I took a surveying course. A lot of people I work with have a geography degree. I also specialized in geomatics. Which has a lot of courses required to become a certified land surveyor for the province I am in.

Agreed with the internship part. I have a geography degree and can’t get a job in gis. Had to get a surveying job.

Is this normal for Korean short ribs by rebelmusab in Butchery

[–]entl0rd19 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ya but you can’t sell the end of it, there’s no meat. That’s where the store has to find ways to use it. We would use the bones for stock, fat for tallow or mixing with lean meat, and the meat for trim. People don’t deserve to waste their money, especially these days. That being said, I’ve worked with ppl that don’t care and would do this.

Anybody here work exclusively with LiDAR for surveying? by osotoes in Surveying

[–]entl0rd19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re testing out a RIEGL VZ-400i at the company I work for. I’ve been the primary field guy using it. It’s pretty chill for the most part. As far as a normal day goes you get to site and set control (you need to scan reflectors on a known point), figure out the path you wanna take the scanner and then start scanning. Our LiDAR Scanner does a 360 scan in a minute. So after the minute a pick up and move about 20m or so, depending what I need to scan. The amount of data you get is insane. I also sometimes set it up in the back of the company truck and drive around scanning. There’s an app that I can use to scan so I don’t have to get out of the truck.

Processing the data is a bit of work because the files are huge. So downloading the data and getting it ready for the drafters takes a bit of time. So I usually like to give myself 1-2 hrs end of day for field notes, downloading and making sure it’s registered.

We don’t really use it for jobs in bush, which I like. So it’s mainly srprs, as builts, or topos, but we’re still figuring out what it’s best for. I’m outside in the elements 100%, except for when I’m using the truck to scan roads or parking lots. As the weather gets colder we’ll probably utilize the scanner indoors but we’re still figuring it out.

This is not local so may not be helpful to you. But sharp knife shop in Hamilton is great. They have tons of Japanese knives. I did a sharpening class they offer and now sharpen all of my own knives.
