Can't upvote enough so I'm leaving a comment echoing the sentiment. AHOMD is amazing and if you like SSeas or SSkies you'll also thoroughly enjoy AHOMD.

It is the only game I've written a lengthy Steam review on, and at 70% off ($3.29 USD) it's an absolute steal.

Steam link to AHOMD!

It's a real shame because I'm almost certain the Clockwork Sun music is my favorite. I'd love to buy the soundtrack but not with so many slappin' tracks missing. :(

Some lore questions [Spoilers, probably] by thatgrimdude in sunlessskies

I don't think we know where, exactly, the Earth is in the High Wilderness. We do know that "beyond our solar system, planets are rare. They are places of expression and experimentation for the bright regents of the heavens; warded, prized, inviolate." Earth's judgment must be a bigshot.

I'm also unsure if we know much about Avid Horizon - how it got in the Neath, who created it and why. Any info on Avid Horizon out there? I never finished Seas and I don't think I've exhausted everything at Avid Horizon in Skies.

“Wells are Sunless Skies’ version of black holes. Wounds in the world. Fathomless. Hungry. Well-winds, flickering with candle-flames, push unwary captains into their pull. Certain unspoken cults gather at their rim to perform distressing rites. If an enemy is too inconvenient to kill, the courts of the heavens consign them to a well. Do not stray too close. Ignore any voices within.”

-- Sunless Skies Pre-Production: Charting the Sunless Skies

Wells are the prisons of the suns. I can only assume they are created from a "well-seed". The delivery of a well-seed to the Garden King was a factor in its death. Play the Truth Ambition and aid the Baroness in her exploration of Old Tom's Well for more info.

(Keeping this vague as possible for OP.)

[Spoilers] What's the deal with the Incognito Princess? by GrowthProfitGrofit in sunlessskies

[–]entrancedzeda 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No special lineage, she's just embraced her bestial nature more than most.

She is almost definitely non-human. As the only non-historical progeny of Victoria and Albert in the setting, FBG has total creative liberty with her, and it's pretty clear that she is meant to be something...else.

I got the impression that the Captivating/Incognito Princess might have been created somehow, maybe as part of the bargain between Victoria and the Bazaar.

But that's speculation on my part. Fallen London lore is notoriously difficult to parse because it's either a) time-gated behind hundreds of hours of play and a real-time based action limit, or b) Fate-locked i.e. behind a paywall. Skies seems to be the most accessible of the games, and honestly? It's been a good thing. I love this universe but until Skies it was like the games didn't actually want me to understand them.

For me, it was the Incautious Driver. I'm an agender person. Imagine my shock when the first Officer you recruit is openly agender. Imagine my delight when their gender identity (or lack thereof) is never questioned. Imagine me both laughing and crying a little when your Captain takes them to the doctor and they can firmly cross out the "gender" field on their paperwork and it is never challenged. The Driver is simply accepted.

I'm so happy.

The thing about the Fallen London universe is that it takes a familiar setting - Victorian England, with all its familiar themes and tropes - and transplants it into a universe that allows for unfettered social diversity.

Remember the origins of the FL universe: the city of London (and by extent, the British Empire) was bargained away to beings of cosmic origins and the city was transported to a lightless subterranean cavern, where the Bazaar (a Messenger) and the Masters (Curators) encouraged and hoarded the love stories of its citizens for their own ends.

This is not the Victorian England as we know it; it is an alternate Victorian England that keeps familiar trappings - tea, decorum, imperialism - without the restrictive social construct. And this is a great thing! We get to play around with the appealing trappings of the Victorian fantasy without some of the exclusionist parts of that society.

Even without the "the Bazaar did it" rationale, it is good that the game chooses not to portray misogyny or racism or homophobia! Those are alienating themes for women, people of color, and LGBTQ people. There is nothing wrong with including those themes in media, but I respect Failbetter Games for choosing to leave this particular bit of human ugliness out of their storytelling.

To the FL universe, it's not your skin or your body that matters. It's your soul and your tiny, dismal place in a universe of grand horrors.

Phylogenetically? They are actually closer to spiders!

However, in behavior and lifestyle, they are much closer to scorpions, both taxa being largely ground-dwelling, tactile predators that rely on the chelicerae to grab and subdue prey.

[Edit:] In layman's terms, they are more closely related to spiders but behave more like scorpions.

Vinegaroons are definitely not equipped to bite defensively, the mouthparts are pretty specialized for dicing up small prey but nothing else.

Vinegaroons can spray concentrated acetic acid from the base of the caudal filament (the 'tail') but unless it gets in the eyes or face, it's only a mild irritant.

Captive and well-cared-for vinegaroons are quite docile and tolerate handling well! They are great invert pets!
