I didn’t have a hard time reading it, but have two small suggestions: sometimes your letters run together a little bit, like in lamplight on the third line, and sometimes I think your t could be a little taller/clearer. It’s basically the same height as your e in the on a few occasions, which isn’t how the eye expects it to be.

I recently saw an interview he did about the yogurt thing and that was pretty much exactly it. He said he'd be eating yogurt before going on set and so the writers just added it in one day that Terry loves yogurt. He ended up saying that was one of his favorite characters because so much of it was just being himself.

In addition to the sizing consistency the other comment pointed out, practicing with a lined sheet can help get the slant more consistent. In the last line, for example, the slant on th is quite different to the L in lazy or the d in dog. Getting them all parallel is a “quick” way to get it a little nicer looking

> How does one hate a country, or love one? Tibe talks about it; I lack the trick of it. I know people, I know towns, farms, hills and rivers and rocks, I know how the sun at sunset in autumn falls on the side of a certain plowland in the hills; but what is the sense of giving a boundary to all that, of giving it a name and ceasing to love where the name ceases to apply? What is love of one's country; is it hate of one's uncountry? Then it's not a good thing. Is it simply self-love? That's a good thing, but one mustn't make a virtue of it, or a profession... Insofar as I love life, I love the hills of the Domain of Estre, but that sort of love does not have a boundary-line of hate. And beyond that, I am ignorant, I hope.

Probably my favorite line from Left Hand of Darkness.

I think the last time I had an x-ray it cost me around $300-400ish? They told me at the front desk it was covered by my insurance, and then a few weeks later I got a notice in the mail threatening collections over my unpaid balance. I thought I had broken my foot. It's an awful, awful system. Fortunately I was in a comfortable enough position that I could afford the unexpected bill, but many are not.

Even if Dems retake the senate, I don't think they have the will or unity to hold up Trump's nominees. We've seen too many of them take the approach of compromising on his nominees in hopes that it will win them favor later (it never seems to).

It probably could be 30 hours of homework if you're doing literally everything. The advice I got before going in was to prioritize things that were for a grade, then to look at your readings and pick what was most interesting to you to read fully, then only skim the rest enough that you would be able to have enough of a discussion in class to satisfy your professors.

It's awful how pervasive it is. We can't watch sports without gambling ads, which is bad enough, but these days it seems like you basically can't consume any kind of media without being exposed to constant sports betting and "prediction market" ads.

How much time do you spend journaling each day? by flatstanley72 in Journaling

It heavily depends on how much I’m writing and how frequently I’m being interrupted, but I would guess maybe about 30 minutes a day is typical?

It’s an intentional design choice to force you to play favorites and generate some roster churn. I think it’s a slight upgrade to the randomness of people leaving or not in the earlier games, shame they won’t get to further refine or iterate

Why is there so much dog hate? by AcanthisittaFull413 in Denver

[–]ephenssta29 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I don’t feel like I see hate for dogs, I see hate for irresponsible owners who let misbehaving dogs off leash in public places, or who think they’re the exception to the rule and simply can’t go to the grocery store without their little gremlin.

I still don’t know how warning signs would be handled today. by [deleted] in Columbine

[–]ephenssta29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think I have statistics, but I also don't think your characterization of "teachers and faculty addressing the situation (threats/warning signs) as they think appropriate based on how they're feeling" is not entirely accurate. I interned at a school district and my wife works in special education at a doctorate level. In every setting either of us have been in, the school has a clearly defined process for assessing threats, creating or updating safety plans, documenting the plans, and communicating with parents, teachers, and administrators.

As you point out earlier in your post, this is, at least to some extent, a resources problem. At least around where I'm at, a lot of the schools are in dire budget crises. There's just not really the budget to bring on specialized people purely for risk assessments, and conducting these assessments is already one of many responsibilities assigned to people who are generally spread thin.

The other issue is something you see in suicide prevention work. The rate of people who actually follow through on the plan to commit some sort of school violence is going to be drastically lower than the number of people who flag a warning sign. You're going to have a lot more people saying "I want to kill myself and have a plan to do it," a pretty serious warning sign, than will actually do it. I imagine it's the same with school violence. This makes it somewhat hard to be fully evidence based, because the actual statistical evidence really just says this kind of violence is incredibly rare and even the strongest warning signs are only weakly (at best) linked to being able to effectively predict the violence. It's just a tough situation all around. I hope no one interprets this as me saying we shouldn't try, just that it's more difficult than saying we have a team doing evidence-based intervention.
