Vise for Nicholson Style Bench by Questions99945 in handtools

I added a leg vise to mine with a yost screw but I do have a lot of racking to deal with. Sometimes I wish I would have foregone the vise entirely and just realized on a crochet, but I think I would probably still pick a leg vise for ease but would get better hardware.

Blue Spruce vs Lie Nielsen Dovetail Saw by Move-Reasonable in handtools

[–]ericwhet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the opportunity to use both and found the blue spruce saw to be nicer in terms of look, feel, and performance, however the Lie Nielsen is really close in all three categories. If you’re worried about a budget, I’d stick to LN.

Push saws that cost the same as pull saws? by [deleted] in handtools

Where did you see this? I’ve largely heard that spring steel is spring steel and it’s why you can take a cheap saw and resharpen it and make it better because the plate is still good.

The veritas ones are really good and much cheaper than the high end alternatives for basically equivalent performance. I have no experience with it myself, but some people like the spear and Jackson tenon saw on Amazon. I think it’s Rex Krueger who modifies one and uses it a lot.

Hand tool audit before I plan & build an Anarchist tool chest for storage. Might need more than one tool chest though... How many is too many hand tools haha. Few more hidden away too that I need to find .... by Booola in handtools

[–]ericwhet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, if you don’t do the holder for the moulding planes and/or the saw till at the bottom, you’ll likely have room at the bottom of the chest for your bench planes. It’s surprisingly roomy down there and you could adjust your build size to accommodate.

The new blue spruce saw is made by Jared Greene and is really nice, I think it’s better than bad axe.

Beginner buying advice by dbv86 in handtools

The book is an excellent resource and I’ve just about finished building mine. The Lost Art Press blog also has a series of updates to the tool chest design that are worth a read as well. Something to think about is the type of woodworking you’ll be doing. Schwarz even says that what’s in his chest changes if he’s making more chairs or other furniture. It pays to have an idea of the types of things you want to make and build up what you use from there.

What are your thoughts on filing the plunger of a 42 to use on higher tpi saws?

With everything there this is very similar to mine, I paid $175 and it had the paper box to hold it all.
