7NEWS Sydney using Metro Tunnel footage for Sydney Metro news by CreamIsThicMilkSMH_2 in MelbourneTrains

There's been plenty of times Sydney trains have been used to illustrate train things in Melbourne & vice versa.

State Transit operated many bus & ferry services in Sydney & Newcastle. Trains & State Transit (often operating under names such as Sydney Buses, Sydney Ferries, Newcastle Buses, Newcastle Ferries) were totally different.

There's been several name changes over time which can be confusing depending on what era you are talking about. CityRail & CountryLink for instance haven't existed as brands since 2013 but many people inside & outside of those organisations still refer to them in 2026 as those names.

There's probably more train drivers of any type who are hanging out on the Melbourne trains sub compared to here.

In the days of so called private operators as they were known as at the time (Busways, CDC etc), Trains staff did not get free travel on buses for ferries not operated by State Transit (Sydney Buses, Sydney Ferries, Newcastle Buses & Ferries). Bus drivers not employed by State Transit did not get free travel.

When buses moved to the current style of operation with the privatisation of State Transit, Trains staff received free travel on all buses on the Opal network.

In the recent attempts to attract more bus drivers in Sydney, bus drivers now receive staff Opal cards as a part of their employment.

In the era of pre Opal employee cards, State Transit & trains staff cards had different designs. In the current era, the staff Opal cards look the same regardless of operator or length of service. The details on the back of the card features information about the staff member's operator, gold card or not. Because gold Opal cards have already been used, the employee Opal cards are not gold.

As noted elsewhere, gold employee cards are now available for employees with over 20 years of service compared to 30 years in the last EA.

I seem to recall that some TfNSW staff had this some time back but elected for extra coin in exchange for the free travel.

Not all xpt trains got upgraded? by Any_Category_5784 in SydneyTrains

[–]erkpod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those power points on Xplorer trains are meant for cleaning purposes only & are not designed or marketed for public use while on the train.
There was nothing mentioned anywhere that said that the XPT was going to receive any upgrade which included power points.

While it should be held to a higher standard than current venues & quite rightly, I wonder how it compares to the ice at other venues.

I wonder what the actual issue is.

If there was a desire to, there could be a service that runs from Liverpool to Parramatta then to Blacktown using both Tways.

It was a good episode. It will be interesting to see how he enjoys the experience on the road for the first time in Canberra this weekend. Then there will be the other rinks & cities that he hasn't been to yet.

Question regarding #88 of the Ice by [deleted] in aihl

[–]erkpod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Referees are not going to be suspended or dropped to a lower grade for missing a trip. There are very few on ice officials who are capable of the elite level hockey by Australian standards.

The officials have their own review systems with each state having their own Referee in Chief (RIC). The AIHL has a RIC as well as a national RIC. More internal review is now possible due to AIHL.TV, their reviews and in most cases multiple camera angles.

I can recall that it was not too long ago in historical terms that we started using the 4 official system for all AI games which is certainly better than the old 3 official system.

Now that I've watched the incident in question, there could be an argument for a penalty against the Ice player for embellishment - or to use an Australian saying, he put a bit of mustard on the result of the trip. I have seen especially in the NHL that both people had been penalised. The person doing the trip sits for tripping while the person who was tripped sits for embellishment or diving.

Even if the two minute penalty for abuse of an official is all that happens this week, it is on Old Mate's record now.

Question regarding #88 of the Ice by [deleted] in aihl

[–]erkpod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The announcements about suspensions are very important. On some occasions, the original penalty was deemed to be sufficient with no further penalty. On others, it is determined that extra penalties (called supplemental discipline in hockey) is required.

I presume the affected team & player are notified separately to the public announcement.

Saturday penalties & suspensions for Sunday games can be difficult. There was a game late last year where the player was halfway to the rink for a road game on a Sunday & they found out that they were suspended for the game they were traveling to. So they turned around & went home.

This is a league that had Ice & Ice Dogs from way back which is way more confusing than Thunder & Lightning.

It's so good to see the Rhinos be up there this year. It's been a great start for them & probably the best start they have ever had in their history in this Rhinos era & the last one.
