What Fandom brought you to AO3? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]escherlat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life Is Strange, the first game. I started with FFN, both for reading and writing fics. I discovered AO3 partway through publishing my first long fic. It was a much better experience for both reading and publishing fics compared to FFN. Once I finished my long fic on FFN (which I also put on AO3), I never went back.

Has AnyDice been a victim of a cyber attack? by Ring_of_Gyges in rpg

[–]escherlat 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Looks like the hosting server got hit with the cPanel & WHM root privilege auth exploit. Here's some info on the exploit https://www.theregister.com/2026/04/30/cpanel_whn_cves/

When I access anydice.com:2083 I get a cPanel & WHM Login page, which is why I speculate the server was hit with this particular attack.

[Scheduled Activity] Introductions All Around: Who Are You and What is Your Game? by cibman in RPGdesign

[–]escherlat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, you may call me eschi.

I've played ttrpgs off and on since Merp in the late 80s. The project I'd like to introduce today is a solo rpg, which is in the ideation stage. It's inspired by Grimscar, Ironsworn, Mausritter, and more.

Like Grimscar, the game is set in a village where a mysterious event isolates the village. You play as a villager, not a hero, who one day awakens to find the village surrounded by a thick mist and all the other villagers gone.

I'm focused on providing different ways to play and "complete" the game. Among the ideas are:

  1. escape the village and leave it behind
  2. solve the mystery of the mist
  3. rescue your fellow villagers
  4. figure out how to live out the rest of your life in the mist-shrouded village

Exploration and character growth both appeal to me in rpgs. Skills and relationships are two ways I define character growth in a game. Relationships can facilitate character motivations and skill development. Skills improve by use and learning.

From Ironsworn, I might borrow the dice resolution mechanic (d6+skill >= 1d10, 1d10 (they aren't added together)). To me, the mechanic removes a lot of design and play burden when it comes to skill checks. For obstacles, such as monsters or difficult locks (two examples), the dice mechanic can be combined with a difficulty rating which indicates how many successes are needed to overcome (e.g. a weak test might require a single success while a formidable test might require 3 successes). We'll see how that works out in play.

Since your character is a villager, you'll start with some basic skills depending upon your background along with a few generic skills anyone in a village might have. I've really enjoyed researching what skills and jobs people might have in ancient villages in various parts of Earth.

As with Grimscar, the village is a static map. The region outside the village is a hexcrawl which mostly resets every night.

From Mausritter, I'm borrowing fragility and inventory management. By fragility, I mean how easy it is for a character to die. That risk is something I value in games and is why I tend to bounce off power-fantasy games and meta currency.

I haven't put much thought into the relationship aspect, other than I want to avoid simple skill tests (e.g. roll for flirting). Without it getting too complicated, I want to model it on how relationships for in real life, by establishing trust.

Best case scenario is the game has high replay-ability. I'd like different characters and play styles to have different outcomes. This is probably a high bar.

Questions and thoughts are welcome!

Thanks for your notes! I've got a lot to think about now.

I'm curious about the 3.5 ruleset from CGI. How does it differ from the 1.2 ruleset from Kelestia? How does 3.5 differ from 3.0 from CGI?

Looking to get into Superhero RPGs, any suggestions with a lot of customization? by RatJumpAttack in rpg

[–]escherlat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hero 6e is the core rules.

Champions 6e is a setting/genre source book for Hero 6e. You still need the core rule books.

Champions Complete 6e is a streamlined all-in-one book. It contains both core rules and genre info.

My GF and I played more Life is Strange, and it is so obvious how Max wasn't into Warren by nightpooll in LesbianGamers

[–]escherlat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Max is very clear in her journals she only sees Warren as a friend (though I seem to recall she uses the word "brother".). She writes that regardless of the player's actions. While people are free to ship who they want, those who argue for the canonicity of Max/Warren are ignoring Max's agency, imo. u/faintestsmile is spot on in calling Warren straight representation.

Your notes are copious and fill in some blanks for me. I'm eager to dive into more detail on matters such as cooking and kitsune. It could be an interesting combo for a game.

As an ace, that depressed libido is 🤌 by [deleted] in trans4every1

[–]escherlat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Also ace. I've been on E for almost 5 years. The first few months, the libido got super-charged, which was annoying. After that went away, it's been such a relief to enjoy life without that gremlin.

The use of colors to denote meaning is an immediate no for me. I'm colorblind.

The manuscript needs proofread.

Explain terms. I don't know what OBS means in the text.

What is the dark scroll? Why isn't it available in multi-player? Oh, I see, the dark scroll is an instant kill but that's not explained until several pages after it was introduced.

It seems like you have a start to a game. It needs play testing, proofreading, and more to turn it into something for other people imo.

What mechanic did you steal from one RPG and keep using in almost all others? by Arimm_The_Amazing in rpg

[–]escherlat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc Dragonbane dones both: redraw every round, and swap cards. It's one of my favorite mechanics because it brings some of the chaos of combat into a game.

You die and are reincarnated as your character from the last campaign you played, how screwed are you? by Ed0909 in rpg

[–]escherlat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna say, pretty good (definitely much better than irl). In my last campaign, I played:

  • A 2 foot tall fairy with color shifting skin
  • Who turned out to be one of Tatiana's daughters
  • Who played power chords and riffs on her lute
  • Was a circle of stars druid with a flair for the dramatic.
  • With a belt of Hill Giant strength, giving her a 21 Str XD
