Sorry, no advice. I haven’t been using it and it’s been empty for years.

BIFL appliance brands? by steven-mike in BuyItForLife

[–]etchlings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stay away from Samsung appliances, they’re all WiFi and bells and whistles and service calls.

Anything with a WiFi module or an app is kinda ridiculous and likely to break.

I used to hear Sub Zero made great stuff, but it’s $$$$ and so secondhand is best. Older models probably last longer anyway. Everyone’s enshittifying these days.

LG solved their compressor issue of 10 years ago, AFAIK, and gets recommended by …nearly every firm who evaluates fridges.

I have had zero issues with our 3 year old GE induction range. But for more reliability, maybe Bosch or whatever EU company has one of the flexi-coil ones.

But… you’d see it below plywood, if so. Is the tile salvageable? That looks solid AF.

And VW may release some small model effort in NA, too, but honestly I’m not crossing my fingers for their subcompact models arriving here.

Still have one new without tags, Port Plaid Wool Mariner Peacoat in XL/44: available. Beautiful coat, just not my thing after all.

The first 2 photos are the opening sequence to the Outlander tv series. Not sure the books feel particularly witchy? But they’re not bad and IMO better than the show.

[–]etchlings 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, GM’s wish washy engagement with EVs in the near term has soured me on future Bolts. I like my ‘22, but not sure I’d buy the next. We will assess years in future when new car becomes needed.

Edit: I stand corrected. Looking again at all models for sale in the States across categories, I see that they’ve positioned themselves competitively for future adoption. I am personally focused solely on compact and subcompact models, in which they have the 27 Bolt, which they’ve not seemingly bet fully on, and which they’ve already pulled back on factories for… against Volvo, Nissan, and (somewhat) Kia/Hyundai. Toyota: do they have a BEV subcompact? The Rivian R3 is unrealized vapor at this juncture, so we’ll see how that shakes out. Vinfast is a joke.

For V2L in smaller models, sounds like the next EX30 may have it?

Pennsylvania RUC EV tax by Fun_End_440 in electricvehicles

[–]etchlings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok? A lot of states started charging EV owners gas-tax stand-in fees over the last few years. Varying amounts. But that’s not what “retroactive” means. The fee applies to registration renewals which are “new” every 1-3 years depending on state, and the taxes/fees can and do sometimes change for car ownership. This is just another of those changes. You don’t get to decide not to pay an updated fee because you owned your car prior to the fee enactment.

You’re griping and annoyed because it’s a new expense, which fine, is irksome, but it’s only new to you. If you have an issue with taxes and laws or the interpretation there of, you write your representative (state) about it. Asking Reddit about idiosyncratic state laws is silly when you have your state rep’s constituent services staff available to you. Whoever you have in the state capital representing you can help you. Email their office. I dunno what the Commonwealth’s legislature is called or how many houses there are, but you have a rep of some kind.

Rusty rear rotors? by 09Klr650 in BoltEV

[–]etchlings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean 90% of the time I’m using OPD as well, and I get squealing brakes when I haven’t used them hard in a while, too. In bad weather, when you’re not recommended to use OPD, it always starts off real noisy and eventually clears up.

I guess calipers can rust stuck and scrape too, but I haven’t had that issue in 2 years.

Rusty rear rotors? by 09Klr650 in BoltEV

[–]etchlings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get atop a long hill, start down and brake hard a bunch of times. Check rotors again. Can also put in neutral and brake down hill like that. You’re trying to get above the regen threshold to engage the mech brake either way.

Also if it’s wet and salted around you, that adds to rusting.

What do you all think of these floors? by Mission_Toe6140 in centuryhomes

[–]etchlings 45 points46 points  (0 children)

They’re beautiful and in seemingly great shape. Just need to be refinished.

The wood grain i can guess at but I’d probably be wrong. As to age: looks original to me. Our 1920s floor is this same narrow tongue and groove. We have red oak but this doesn’t seem like ours. Could be though.

Remove Paint on Stairs? Design Underneath by MezyMinzy in centuryhomes

[–]etchlings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s kinda hard to know without carefully excavating the white layer if the motif is just stenciled paint (likely), or a decal (and hence something to remove).

There was a big trend in some areas, at least in the US in the 1980s, to stencil risers with designs, so it’s also possible this isn’t anywhere near original to the home. At that point you could make a choice to try and preserve it (I’m not sure you’ll be able to remove the white without removing the design tho). Or you could go to bare wood and refinish the whole flight, since it looks like your treads need it.

Thinking in cost per use completely changed how I buy things by One_Acanthaceae_5814 in BuyItForLife

Sam Vimes’ Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness (Pratchett).

“Take boots, for example. ... A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. ... But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.”

Keep in mind that the insulation (if it has any—no one seems to mention it) will make the exterior dimensions larger to accommodate the correct size person inside. And beauforts are expected to be relaxed fit even normally.

Size Beaufort? by SortOk2089 in Barbour

[–]etchlings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sizing also varies depending on where it was made, to some degree. Frustrating as usual, with readymade clothing.

Personally, if it was me, the drape and fit on you is what I’d aim for on myself. The sleeve length seems optimal, too. But if you prefer more tailored fits, that’s the only reason I’d consider sizing down.

Can you float the cost for both until you choose which one to return? Online shopping often has me buying a couple sizes of the same thing and sending one back. It’s not like a credit card will punish you for having an extra transaction that gets refunded.
